I definitely agree with Dragon Age: Inquisition. After doing a critical path game while ignoring as much of the other content as possible. I found the story to be the most enjoyable and going for the trap of being an open world style game really diluted the quality of the story. I found a similar thing with Andromeda, but with its design I find it harder to focus purely on the critical path to make it more like the first three Mass Effect games. Yeah i don't think the open world has really helped the overall experience. I agree that Inquisition has some very good story stuff but experience could get lost in the open world slogathon.
Andromeda was poor imo and the bugs and the open world slog just highlighted that even more.
I'm a completionist and explorer. However, I agree with you that the Hinterlands was a slog. Especially so, when climbing escarpments or when walking on uneven surfaces and you had to jump. Poor design there.....
Yeah, too big an area with no content gets boring real fast.

They tried making a game the fans said they wanted and we got Mass Effect: Andromeda since they tried to do everything fans said they wanted in the game and the final results were... well you saw. And how many of those people wanted Bioware to remove the power wheel? How about removing the choice to recruit a squadmate or not? I take DA2, a game that took about 18 months, over MEA, a game that had 5 years to make.

And how many of those people wanted Bioware to remove the power wheel? How about removing the choice to recruit a squadmate or not? I take DA2, a game that took about 18 months, over MEA, a game that had 5 years to make. You got me, they couldn't do everything. They still tried to make a game that "had the exploration of Mass Effect 1, the companions of Mass Effect 2, the combat of Mass Effect 3" and then not to mention they removed classes, tried to make the game an open world, put crafting into the game, put inventory systems in the game, tried to make the character not act bipolar by being able to flip from one side of the spectrum to another, expand upon romances, and more that I cannot think of. So you are right they did something people didn't want, but there are plenty of things that altered from the first three games that people kept saying they wanted. The reason why DA2 worked is they made a game that fit within the development schedule and didn't have an online committee telling them what they must have in the game. If you take away crunch it would have probably taken three years to make and in this era you need to have ethically made games without crunch otherwise Kotaku makes it sound like you force people to work at gunpoint and its "soul crunching" and doesn't put any context into it.

The best game in the franchise? Its all about personal preference of course, but they spread the good parts out too much in Andromeda for me.

The amount of people defending and championing EA in this thread is positively sickening. Depend on whether you erally enjoy anythin gaboyt their games. For me even if Bioware and other's aren't releasin ggames I like I always seem to enjo ythe Fifa offering each year even if I do just play career and othe singleplayer modes like the Journey. From last year both Jedi Fallen Order and NFS Heat were both good games I thought. So EA aren't all bad it's just a question of what do you want from your games

It will be interesting to see how CD Project does making a game that doesn't already have a wealth of pre-written lore and characters. I haven't exactly been blown away by Cyberpunk so far.
CDPR and Cyberpunk 2077 are getting by on an overhype and looks and feels so underwhelming that had spend a lot of money on bringing in Keanu Reeves to give it some star power and now they're making prominces to a super rabid fanbase, that deep down they won't be able to keep no matter how well meaning they are. Oh it will get great glowing reviews and their super rabid fanbase will eat it up ask for seconds and of course it will make a lot of money.
Sooner or later CDPR will drop the ball and then the knives will come out and if you think BioWare and Bethesda got stabbed and bloodied, they will look a pair of paper cuts to sheer amount of the blood letting that is waiting for CDPR.

Sooner or later CDPR will drop the ball Absolutely. and then the knives will come out Well, that depends. If its something made spitefully so, knowing it will sow divisiveness and discourse, like Druckman did with TLoU2, or will it just be an underwhelming entry in their portfolio, like DA2.

Gamers are really fragile beings. For a lot of people, entertainment media are very important. For some people, it's all they have. If you like something a lot and some guy comes over and ruins it, like David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, for example, are you wrong in calling them out? Should you accept anything and everything, because "it is done"? And is that mentality something that you should go with into everything? Because a principle has many extensions and applications. tl;dr I don't think it's fragility.

If the reason the franchise is 'ruined' is because the writers had the audacity to include minorities - then sure it is fragility. If anyone claims the franchise was ruined because of minorities ... come on. Like, are we going to disregard the sidelining of characters, the abrupt ends to storylines and the nonsensical, at best, endings, because minorities were included and that was such a bigger issue. In TLoU2's case, the treatment of beloved characters, the nonsensical reactions and trains of thought put into each path the characters go down is just absurdly random. Like, of course Luke Skywalker will turn into a bitter old man, ready to kill his nephew, because he's old. That's not how character development works. You're rewriting characters to suit your narrative and you're doing it in the least likeable way. You can do it, but don't expect people not to fling shit back at you. And on top of that, you have your self-insert have sex with you muscle girl OC. This is very, very expensive fan fiction. And anyone who's angry, is rightfully angry at Neil Druckman. And I say this as someone who has had very little investment in the franchise as characters, so I can understand why someone who is invested, would be angry, while having the benefit of being impartial to the game itself, therefore open to both Druckman's and the fanbases' points of view.
