Hello everyone. In light of the growing number of people and interest in The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks....I have decided to make a dedicated Discussion Thread about those books. Hope nobody minds. I would like to move all of the previous references from the "What are your currently reading?" thread into this new topic and for your convenience I would like post those below so that we can keep the flow of the conversation going.
Please let me know if anyone has any objections to this and if anyone has made a post about those books and would like to move their post into this Discussion as a way of contributing to it, please do so. Or you can please feel free to leave any post that is already in "What are you reading?" where it is, and we can begin fresh with a new comment section here.
I hope this meets everyone's satisfaction, but please let me know if you have any other ideas, suggestions, comments or objections to this and we can come together to try and work out a better alternative that meets everyone's satisfaction.

I'd love to have somewhere to discuss it, I am half way through the trilogy and maybe it's because I read it late at night before igo to bed but I still get confused who the hell some people are!!!!!

4 hours ago dazk said: Energizer Bunny 211 Avatar 15 hours ago Energizer Bunny 211 said: I'm about 200+ pages into the second book, which I"ve read four times previously in the past decade-- I have not read the novella The Perfect Shadow because it's super expensive up here in the Great White North because it is only available in hardcover. Yet it is only 150 pages, quite small. It's 35.00 dollars, which is expensive considering it's size. But the other 3 are very good and what makes them so good isn't necessarily the action or magic or settings....for me it is the characters. And yes, Durzo had a horrible life....But he was a cactus. My favourite character is Momma K because she plays the duel roles, lives in two worlds so effortlessly. She's this beautiful courtesan and wealthy owner of the city's most ritzy brothels....but she's also the secret leader of the criminal underground 'mafia'/network of spies if you want to call them that. And she's so good at that part of her job, she's been doing it from the shadows for 20 years without anyone noticing. How someone can live in two worlds like that and yet still retain their 'humanity' is I think, written very well. I think most of the characters are really well written, I just wish there were fewer of them for me to keep track of!!!!! Momma K is great, Viridana is great and I think Uly and Kylar are good even (just waiting for them to be developed more) though Kylar seems like a bit of an immature idiot ATM and I also really like Ariel who has a really long name that DazK can't remember all of ATM. Ken to find out who the "Wolf" is but I have a good idea who I think it is. Curious Dazk, who do you think The Wolf is??? And yes, I really like Vi, too. (For reasons I won't spoil), next to Momma K and Kylar, of course, Vi is a favourite character of mine. There's a detailed Wiki on it. I had to skim to read about characters and all the Ka'kari when I started the first book for the first time; so much was happening and they introduced so many new characters it made my brain hurt. So I breezed over the Wiki just to read up on 'who's who' (ie Momma K).....But if you are going to do this, don't read too much or spend too much time on reading it, because it can and does give away some major plot details.

I think the Wolf is Ezra, the wizard who created the forest that Sister Ariel is trying to get into. but that's just a guess.

Yes, The Wolf is Ezra The Mad, and that's right he created the Dark Hunter's Forest (and inadvertently the Dark Hunter himself)

No! No! NO! You're not doing it right! You're not supposed to die three times in as many weeks-you're actually supposed to take your time in dying- oh, and I forgot to let you in on a little secret about dying..... Whoopsie. SSSsssshhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! It's a secret. That I'll get to once you've died a few more times. Or when the world is ending. Or when neither of us have a choice, which ever comes first.

So finished reading the three books and the Novella, thoroughly enjoyed the majority of it but I found how Weeks built the story weird and that ultimately it diminished the understanding and enjoyment of the story for me. The Novella only reinforced this for me as it contained information that would have been great at the beginning of the overall trilogy.
My main complaint is that too little information is given about Ezra, Jordan Alestes and Acaelus etc. at the start. In my opinion that should have been at the beginning as a prologue or woven into the first book via flashbacks of Durzo's life. Again a larger insight into Durzo's life would have been beneficial as would a lot more insight into Dorian, Solon, Feir and Momma K's earlier life. It was just weird and hard to build a rapport/understanding of who they were and are without knowing their place in their culture/families hierarchies. Having it thrown it suddenly given to you in book 3 (especially Solon's situation) was strange and I still am not sure who/what Feir's history is. I think it was mentioned briefly but I obviously don't remember anything other than he went to school with Dorian and Solon.
Also there were too many leaps in time early on when it would have been great especially in book one to have had more focus on Durzo/Kylar's training etc. The Novella gives a great short story about one quest after Kylar get's the Kokkari that would have made a great addition to the development of his character.
Anyway, in short really liked the books but they could have been constructed at least for me better by building a better knowledge base of the history and by supplying more information on the main characters earlier on so you had a connection of them to their countries/culture and families. It seemed too much like Weeks was trying to be too clever with a big reveal at the end rather than allow a greater emotional attachment to the main characters.

*Spoilers for anyone who hasn't finished the Night Angel Trilogy*
Even though I have read the trilogy four times I cried at the end every time for a few reasons: Firstly, I didn't want Elene aka Doll Girl to die, and secondly, I also cried because Vi had grown to love Kylar and even loved him enough to marry him. I was happy for their relationship because I knew how it started; they hated each other and wanted each other dead. (In a way, it reminded me a lot, a lot of Mara Jade and Luke Skywalker-- speaking of the EU. They too, started out as enemies, but they grew to love each other and get married).

Yeah that was pretty touching, all of Vi's growth was well done and enjoyable. With Elene did I miss it or did they not say how she actually got to Khali? I have been reading the book late at night and wondered if I just forgot it but if not that was a slightly implausible part of the book.

Hey Dazk, if I remember correctly she is kidnapped by Roth aka "Rat", on Neph's orders to bring her before Khali as a potential host body
