I never did get into Origins. I played it a couple of times but always playing as a Mage, I could never make it past the Drawven Proving Grounds in Orzamar where it was basically like a gladiator match....so I gave up on it. How do you beat that part? Is it worth playing and trying to finish?

I never did get into Origins. I played it a couple of times but always playing as a Mage, I could never make it past the Drawven Proving Grounds in Orzamar where it was basically like a gladiator match....so I gave up on it. How do you beat that part? Is it worth playing and trying to finish? In Orzammar you have the choice between two candidates, the more noble Harrowmont and the more morally dubious Bhelen Harrowmont's first quest is entering the proving in his name Bhelen's first quest is taking some "questionable" papers to some key players for the votes and has you enter the Deep Roads earlier
so taking that from your comment, I'm assuming at the time you picked Harrowmont?  I can try to give you a few tips;
mages have some very powerful abilities that can one-hit enemies on lower difficulties, a good combination is cone of cold + stonefist (for shattering) cone of cold is also handy because it takes other enemies out of the fight briefly unless they pass a check for freezing crushing prison is also a good alternative, as is walking bomb with the upgrade virulent walking bomb
glyph of paralysis or mass paralysis can also be handy in a pinch, as is curse of mortality
during some of the later fights in this portion you have access to a party member, I'd advise using a party member with access to poisons and applying soulrot coating or soldier's bane (to leech stamina making them unable to cast abilities) to their melee weapons if you have it. (many enemy types are suspect-able to spirit damage unless they're spirits themselves)

How do you beat that part? Is it worth playing and trying to finish? If you went with Harrowmont then you have to finish it  ... but you can skip it if you went with Bhelen. Difficulty is DAO's achiles' heel. It's an unbalanced game. Play it on easy, learn the mechanics and if you're up for a 2nd playthrough then do it on normal.
