It's a thought that hit me as I was playing Andromeda. In the OG trilogy I almost always took a Krogan squad mate with me if I could, but, in Andromeda, I've found myself indifferent towards whatever Drack has to say or do. Now some might blame the quality of the writing that went into Drack but I'd say it's part of a much larger issue - we've kinda explored all there is to explore with Krogan. I was on Kadara and I was thinking 'oh another gruff Krogan merc - this is new and exciting'.
The Krogan, out of the big four aliens in the series, have undoubtedly received the lion share of focus, and I'm just about ready for them to take a backseat role in the next hypothetical Mass Effect game. Maybe bring in another 'heavy' species for variety or expand an existing one like the Batarians.

I have been for a while, ME3 tried to add some depth to them but I don't think they pulled it off. It doesn't help the gruff merc is one of biowares go to character types. An entire species of their common archetype is a bit much.

I'm a big fan of the Krogan and their storyline and I want to see where they go next. I understand how some fans could be fatigued with them however, and I think that a focus on other species' stories aside from the Krogan, Quarians and Geth would definitely make things more interesting and is hopefully the way things will go in future. I'm more than fine with not having a Krogan squad mate and I would definitely like to see more of the Batarians and a squad mate is always the best way to do it. I like them and they had an interesting history. I honestly look forward to an ME game with none of the traditional species filling the squad mate roles.

I liked the Krogan companion we had so far... But since we had Wrex, kid-Wrex and old-Wrex characters, I'm ready to either have a really different, unique Krogan, or leave the place to another type of companion. I'm still waiting for a Batarian merc, or a Quarian soldier.

You can do things like making a Krogan character a scientist or an engineer for a sense of uniqueness, but in the end it's hard to escape from the familiar 'gruff tough soldier' type even with those attributes.

Well, either they add something more to Krogan culture (shouldn't be hard, since all we have seen is basically all post Tuchance Apocalypse) like, say a Krogan who follow an ancient philosophy, different from the "angry mercenary", or, as you say, a non warrior one. I'd prefer having a mechanic/non combatant Krogan on the ship, instead of having one in the team. Anyway, I'd like for other races to have more space to shine.

THIS TOPIC IS BLASPHEMY !
I love krogans for my part, though I can understand how some people might find their aggresive demeanor a bit tiring.
I think it's just a matter of crafting krogans (from a writer's perspective) as something other than warriors. We all loved the "Blue Rose of Illium" dude, he was funny, smart and an awesome window into the diverse behavior that each alien race has in Mass Effect.

I'd mind it less in a criminal campaign like your thread. I eye roll way too much at the we depict them as X, but now we show you a nice Batarian. We get it, we get it they are all individuals you preachy bastards. Just shut up and give me a batarian to kill. But hey Batarian muscle thug in a criminal campaign, I'm cool with that.

I have a idea with my older Cerberus Phantom idea threads awhile back deals with a Human that is a former slave with Batarian borders and her past deals how she escapes with a older batarian slave in tow and get to see Batarian warden that treats batarian and humans like dirt. Of course there will be Batarian Prison Guards to kill in interesting ways. Regardless if you wan to a paragon or renegade, being that annoying Cerberus Phantom will be able to recruit this human ex slave to wreck havoc on Batarians and other geniunely nasty individuals thru out the entire galaxy. The Main Cerberus Phantom has his own reasons in joining the Cerberus and Cerberus didn't manipulate or do anything to make him join

Krogans are better as foes than companions IMO. Wrex turned that notion on its head but BioWare have spent so much time humanizing them collectively a bit like the Brotherhood of Steel they have forgotten how to write them convincingly. It’s past time to start exploring some new cultures in the next game. I hope the next game has a faction system so that you can pick and choose the make up of your squad and the extent of the involvement of different factions in the main quest line. If you learn more towards renegade traits and mercenary characters your squad and story should reflect that, conversely if you are more aligned with the citadel species and more dare I say paragon in outlook your squad and story could be very different depending on how much BioWare would be prepared to go down this route.

They do the humanization thing with all of them. Krogan sure, but the Geth as well. ME2 started in and ME3 made them al want to turn into a real boy. Just wait until they humanize the Kett like they did the Geth. Lets face it almost all the Kett are basically the Geth, mindless attack drones. The leadership has some level of free will so we got a glimpse of their culture. Soon though they will explain that the rest have deep thoughts are are all sparking individuals with some kind of group consensus. One from an opposing faction will introduce itself to Ryder and explain most Kett don't believe the transformation should be forced, but the baddies do and you should team up against the baddies. It wont have a name as its just Kett, so Ryder will give it some humancentric historical name.

I don’t see the faction system working without making some huge sacrifices. Character content will likely be much lighter to account for all this. All the stuff we typically enjoy with the companions we’ve gotten in other games will likely be nonexistent as a result. In an ideal world we can have it all, but you just know that increasing spread will only come with a decrease in depth.

Volus companion is what we need. I've always thought it would be a cool idea to have a Volus crew member play a similar role to the 'Alliance Requisitions Officer' in Mass Effect 1. He could be the guy that arranges links between our ship and the shops we visit on planets.
