What if the Veil comes down and reveals that the lands beyond Thedas are just modern-day Earth? *gasp*

How about the Industrial Age? What if they discovered steam engine, refined gun powder, and mechanization? Duuuude Better yet. Fast-forward 1000~2000 years and we have a science fantasy game, with people still doing magic, but also there's androids, AI and advanced weapons powered/enhanced by magic.

It's actually Mass Effect, and it was an alien planet seeded by Prothean researchers all along.

Between the Dwarves and the Qunari, the setting is already moving fairly quickly towards an industrial society. They've already got a printing press per Varric, Bianca created a steam engine, and the Qunari have gun powder that Dwarves are already working on reverse engineering. Given the war between Tevinter and the Qunari, there may be an explosion in the advancement of technology, especially if Tevinter can obtain some of the Qunari's gunpowder and have the Ambassadoria/Merchants' Guild work on reverse engineering/improving it for themselves.

If the Qunari and Tevinter manage to finally broker peace it could potentially bring forth a huge age of enlightenment. If people (particularly the Qunari) keep digging surely they can reverse engineer the ancient dwarven technology and sha brytol machine guns. Combined with the vint's knowledge of magic the possibilities are endless. Imagine Dragon Age with a steampunky Mistborn like setting!! The contrast between technology and magic has been building for a while in the series, it's not just the weaponry but also medical and day to day side of things. It's clear the Circles need an overhaul and with mages running freely there needs to be a counterbalance to that. Naturally, science vs. magic seems like the logical next step.

Imagine Dragon Age with a steampunky Mistborn like setting!! There was a game at the beginning of the century called Arcanum: Of Steam works and magic obscura (think I got that title right). The graphics weren't up to much but the premise was fascinating because it dealt with a situation where technology is gradually taking over from magic, with some people pro-technology and others pro-magic. Just to make it more interesting magic and technology did not mix well. So if you had too much magical ability and tried using a gun, it might back-fire on you, whilst you were actually banned from using steam trains in case you made them malfunction. This meant it took you far longer to get between places but you did have some interesting encounters along the way. However, that could mean you missing a deadline in some distant town. Using magic to break into a building was also very noisy and so could attract guards, whereas the technologically adept thief could quietly get inside with no trouble. So people weren't actively persecuting you and locking you up for having magical ability but it definitely had its drawbacks. I've often wished that game could have been remade with better graphics, etc. So if they moved from the Dragon Age to the Steam Age, for example, with a similar sort of conflict between magic and technology, I could go for that.

For a serious suggestion, I think the Age after the Dragon Age should be called the Compass Age, because I think Thedas is going to enter its equivalent to the RL Age of Discovery. After all, Josephine wants to explore beyond Thedas, to the land of Amaranthine, and thanks to her efforts, Thedas could discover a "New World." Not to mention that the Warden is running around in lands beyond Thedas in search of a cure for the Calling. I for one welcome our Dragon Age: Andromeda Amaranthine overlords.

DID ANYONE SAY ARCANUM: OF STEAMWORKS AND MAGICK OBSCURA ???
And indeed, I confirm everything this good man said about Arcanum... even though you missed a "k" in "Magick Obscura"
I would be totally down with Dragon Age moving to a steampunk setting. People would bitch to no end but it really wouldn't matter since I think it could serve a better and more interesting story for the franchise. At least much better than "Sooolaaaash ish trying to deshtroy the waaaaaaaaarld"
I think we all agree it would probably not be a good idea if it was called... Steam Age

I really don't want the next major background conflict of the setting to be between "magic" and "technology/science".
Science isn't some sort of mysterious force that is opposed to magic. It's merely the study of the natural/physical world through observation and experiment. Any worthwhile scientific study of the "natural world" of Thedas should include magic, not ignore or oppose it. I can think of many ways that magic would assist the development of technology in Thedas, unless they decide to pull some Harry Potter nonsense where technology arbitrarily stops working in the presence of magic, which I would despise.
