It's best to take everything Metacritic has (ESPECIALLY the user scores) with massive mountains of salt.

I don’t know if this is an indication of general opinion but when ResetEra and Kotaku In Action are curb-stomping this game for being awful; you know you went too far.

It's best to take everything Metacritic has (ESPECIALLY the user scores) with massive mountains of salt. Yeah, I already know this story's gonna play out. I can see the headlines right now, "Toxic gamers review bomb The Last of Us II. Why can't we let go of our hate? This is the question posed by Naughty Dog's latest magnum opus, The Last of Us II, one that is not only particularly relevant in our current times but eerily premonitory of fan reaction nowadays bla bla bla..."

Druckmann will definitely spin this to mean that gamers are toxic and haven't learned the lesson and that's why his work is so important.
People so full of themselves always blame others.
I mostly feel bad for all the people work worked themselves half to death for this boring game.

Critics are generally a bit out of touch with the ordinary consumer... (Just as a food gourmet might think McDonald's is disgusting garbage, yet millions of people eat there.)
That's not necessarily a problem since reviews don't drive sales at all if that video by a former IGN employee is to be believed (which I do). User scores MAY reflect better how well a game is actually received. But that's STILL irrelevant to the publisher because the money has been made already on preorders and blind faith hype.
So while the discrepancies between review and user scores are amusing, that's all it is really. Review bombing is an artificial discrepancy anyway...
No need to create clickbait drama over it imo.

Jason Schreier's article on Forbes was an interesting read. Of course the game is going to be review bombed, Neil Druckmann told us he made the game to upset people. Everything I have been told and read about the story is that it is a very basic revenge game that tries to tell us that its smarter then we think it is. The problem with using an interactive media is that you can lose people when trying to make a point like that if you are going to force people to do a violent act without giving them the chance to do something else. The way I understand it is if you try and take a non-violence approach such as trying to stealth around you will get caught and forced into combat. That doesn't prove a point to anyone because that wasn't their choice, it was their choice to try and take the non-violent approach in the first place. I think if Druckmann or whoever was designing the story beats of the game was a little better they could have incorporated choice and a few extra cutscenes to get the point across and not force the hand of the players.

Can't say much about the game, I only watched the ending to check which fingers Ellie loses and she definitely can still play the guitar. Either learn to play left handed, or go Django Reinhardt.
I'm wondering though, is the game bad or is it just not what fans wanted? I played the first part for a couple of hours and gave up due to boring and uninspired gameplay loop and and a story that didn't seem to add anything new to the genre, and the genre itself isn't particularily rich either. The beginning was strong though, but it was about 15 minutes IIRC.

The beginning was strong though, but it was about 15 minutes IIRC. One of my favorite streamers and LPers asked one of his brainiac fans to calculate game combat/stealth time vs. wandering around: Results were that out of a 4 hour, 10 minute pure gameplay session, there’s 50 minutes of cutscenes and 40 minutes of combat/stealth. Everything else was walking around. Now, wandering around in circles is alright if you have good characters who can bounce their personalities off each other or have an interesting world to explore. Those factors were present in Part 1, Part 2 lacks that aspect hence why it feels long and boring.

Imagine the reactions on this forum if the game was DA4, Joel was the Warden/Hawke/the Inquisitor, Abby the new protagonist with a lot of unlikeable auto-dialogue, and the creepy ass self-insert character looked like Patrick Weekes...

Remember how in Mass Effect 2, Garrus' entire loyalty mission was about tracking down the guy that betrayed him and his gang and throughout the whole thing you could clearly see it taking a toll on his sanity? The story made it blatly obvious that Garrus was so consumed with vengeance that he wasn't thinking clearly and that he was so visibly suffering through it all that you wanted to steer him off that path for his own good. In the end you could either let him hear his target's side of the story and make him realize the guy he wanted to kill didn't betray him out of greed or malice and was so wracked with guilt over what he's done that he might as well be a dead man walking...or you could just let him shoot the guy without ever hearing the whole story...or you could let him put the guy out of his misery after hearing him out and give both of them the close they think they both deserve. That's how you explore a revenge story properly. That was achieved in 1 side quest. This game had like 17 hours to explore this same idea and this is it? These poor people got worked half to death for an idea that Bioware explored better in like 1/12th the time? Absolutely disgusting to me. Or how about God of War? an entire FRANCHISE that revolved around their horrible character being utterly consumed by revenge, literally destroying the entire Greek world in his pursuit of it. Then along comes God of War "4". It's message was simple. Be better. Revenge destroyed Kratos, and he knows it. He has a second chance he knows he does not deserve and his message to his son, is Be better, the cycle must stop. This game is about the villain getting the revenge they wanted, the game trying to justify her reasons for it, and then letting her sail away into the mist with no consequences for her actions. I frankly cannot think of a worse message to send. Aside from things like "Slavery is awesome!" or some other nonsense like that.

Or pretty much tell the truth in regards to review bombing. Wish they would've told the truth when the gaming media review bomb it with 10/10. Works both ways to be honest. All it does is just muddles discussions and instead of genuinely discussing the game, they just accuse each other of being "haters" or "shills". But I'll let you guys go and rant about the game. I got my criticisms of the leaks as well, but with all this review bombing going around, once again going to be another tribalistic flame war which gamers will hate each other for liking or disliking game. Something I'm just tired of even though I dislike the leaks.

They could learn a few lessons from this guy too: Ezio was an idiot. He should have known that sparing Rodrigo wouldn’t have ended things and the man would retaliate. Sure it was nice to see him let go of his quest for revenge, but there are others reasons he should have killed him. For example to save the lives of those he still cared about, like his uncle we see get killed in the next game.

Yeah when it's the choice between letting somebody go who might go on killing innocent people and/or your family... or taking that person out of the picture, it doesn't matter if you call it revenge or self-defense. You gotta do what needs to be done.
Letting people go is not always the smart or wise thing to do.
In this case here however it seems that Abby is as tired of violence as Ellie and probably isn't going to be a threat anymore. So I approve of it actually, as the narrative wants us to. It's still a very cliche story with a moral that may be good material for middle school but not an 18+ audience.
If you want a pessimistic view on humanity and a truly tragic death, read Lord Of The Flies. What happens to Simon is actually tragic. Ellie is just being stupid. Big difference. That book is for kids too btw. Infinitely more thought provoking...
