What would you show them to get them interested in playing the games?
I always find this a fun little thought experiment and question to ask people...and with DA 4 right around the corner *cough* I figure it might as well be a good time to try getting people interested int he franchise?
This can literally by anything you can think of from whole games to quest lines, scenes, moments, etc.
Here are mine:
1. An Old Crowe's Tricks introduction: As people know who've read my thoughts of this short story in the Tevinter Nights Thread I loved the beginning of this short story. To me this is quitessential Dragon Age to its core. Without spoiling it the interactions between the characters involved as you slowly realize that not everything is as it seems as a backdrop of the general commentary on 'grey' morality and diversity the series is known for. Perfection. 2. The Arl of Redcliffe Questline from Origins: A bit tough but given but this one introduces us to a lot of things that DA would become known for. You have a taste of Ferelden politics and the series interest in deep political philosophy, you have a taste of the demons (but since Broken Circle almost turned me off on the game, I do not recommend it) , you bump up against the mages and it does lead into the... 3. Urn of Sacred Ashes: I was going to say something else here but I realized that it would be too spoilery for a potential newbie, and long. But then the Urn of Sacred Ashes introduces us to another one of DAs big themes, I realized: The exploration of history and 'true history'. It also has the benefit of feeling like a grand old archeological hunt, so yeah, just one of my favorites. 4. Act 2 of DA 2: This might be hard to do but I still think of Act 2 is probably BioWare's storytelling at its finiest. Plus you get introduced to one of the best DA antagonists. Plus its our first real in depth look into the Qunari. 5. Flemeth: Any of her introduction scenes, when you meet her, after you wake up, or her brief apperance in DA 2. Kate Mulgrew is great and she is a fairly important character.

I literally just gifted my friend DAO on steam with the message just saying "play this".
He's enjoying it so far.

Iron Bulls content is pretty awesome in general, the cutscene where Cassandra is beating him with a stick (and then "good one.....") gets me every single fucking time.. Iron Bull cutscenes would definitely be one of the things I would show someone to get them interested in DA

I show them trailers...if they get curious I show them some gameplay vids maybe point them to a few good reviews, and once they get curious they'll start playing on their own at least...that's what happened with the few people I introduced to the series

I never had the chance to introduce someone into DA. I'd probably employ some of the origin stories, either have them play or watch. My choices would be city elf (female version) and Aeducan (either, but more partial towards male), and after at least one of those, magi origin. In terms of quests, Orzammar. Not the Deep Roads slog, but the parts within the city.
Urn is a pretty bad choice in my view, too controversial and too much of a narrow perspective, plus the player essentially getting punished for not being "sufficiently faithful" (less XP, hard bossfight against the Guardian which is pretty impossible without some experience or preparation). Of course, it drives home the point that non-andrastians are not to be tolerated in human lands, but this quest extends it to the meta-level. Reading up on some Dalish lore would be sufficient for a more in-game focused view, both as far as religious themes and widely different perspectives go. Or just play the Dalish origin back to back with city elf.

Mods. Yes, I know this is limited to PC players. Sorry...
If I discount that, I would focus focus on the roleplay aspect and the ability to create your own character, instead of playing a fixed one.

Assuming that I have to work with limited time. I'd probably go with the second half of the Ostagar segment in DA:O. Roughly from the moment our guys come back from the Korcari Wilds through to Loghain's betrayal.
It may be a bit spoilery but it's still in the very beginning of the game so I wouldn't mind too much. But that segment is what drew me in the most. Walking through the camp one more time and talking to all those NPCs who all have such a rich backstory, witnessing the induction ceremony of the Wardens and getting a sense of the moral ambiguity, seeing the LotR style battle and grasping the epic scope and seeing things like the war council as well as Loghain's eventual betrayal that showcases the GoT like political machinations.
I just feel that segment really condenses all the aspects that make Dragon Age what it is very nicely.
Also, if they are then enticed enough to start a playthrough of their own, they may choose a different origin story and already get a glimpse of the nuance those give to each PT when they play that bit again soon after.

Also serves as a nice tease for the rest of the story.

Sorry, not sure what you mean. Just in case I wasn't clear, the idea is that I show this person that segment with one of my characters, just loading a save or something and then - provided they get hooked - they start a new game on their own.

Roughly from the moment our guys come back from the Korcari Wilds through to Loghain's betrayal. Come to think of it, that has worked on at least one person: me, as it was roughly when I started watching a friend's first playthrough and we basically discovered the rest of the game together, watched as her PC died over 9000 horrible deaths during Lost in Dreams, killed of all the elves (I still mock her for that to this day, as we did not knew that dead Dalish means no unlimited Elfroot for poultices anymore) and then cursed at the Golempocalypse and the cheating dwarf during POHK, before dying miserably to Cauthrien's firing sqaud.

If they're like me and don't usually like medieval stuff or too much gore, DON'T show them the DAO trailer. My reaction too it was ewwwww, lol.
I bought it anyway because I loves ME1. But that trailer was not appealing at all...
And I only tried Mass Effect because a friend insisted it was an RPG and I would enjoy it. And he was right!
I had to watch said friend play ME2 though to be reassured that the game wasn't utter shit and still an RPG and not ruining everything I loved about ME1 because THAT trailer also put me off...

Then tell your friends it has football commentary or hot pockets or whatever straight people like. Those two would be false advertising. If that were the case, I could just show them the Anthem E3 presentation from 2018. I don't think there's something specific to straight people, that is exclusive of LGBTQ+ people. We're all generally people and our sexuality doesn't prevent us from enjoying something that LGBTQ+ people enjoy.

We're all generally people and our sexuality doesn't prevent us from enjoying something that LGBTQ+ people enjoy. The point is that it's rare for a game to allow a gay protagonist. It's meaningful for gay players to have that option; it's not a specific selling point for straight players as straight is the default in most stories. Hell, even a game that "let you be gay," AC: Odyssey, has the straight option forced on you for the sake of the story. It's the same for games with a female protagonist. Those are more common now; less so in 2009 when DAO was released. It's a draw for female players in a way that a male protagonist isn't for male players because most games have male protagonists.

Well, that definitely never turned out to be true. I have played some of them twice already. Would have been a really odd thing to do as well IMO and difficult to really enforce technically (especially with the games modding capabilities).
If they're like me and don't usually like medieval stuff or too much gore, DON'T show them the DAO trailer. My reaction too it was ewwwww, lol. Yea the trailers were really weird, I remember that as well. I had just come out of Mass Effect (and had enjoyed KotOR and Jade Empire before) so I was already sold on DA:O long before release. But those trailers (especially the ones with the heavy metal music or whatever that was) really put me off for a while.

Yeah speaking of the trailers, I remember seeing a DAO trailer and being completely turned off because it just looked like a generic hack and slash action game. At that point I'd played KOTOR and ME and loved them both, so I would say stay far away from the trailers. I ended up getting the game later only once I read glowing reviews and it became my new favorite game.
