Ever since the last Trump Rally, I gained a whole new respect for the Tik Tok crowd, I gotta admit.

In my opinion every app is there to take your info and spy you. I trust them all equally to rip off every little piece of information they can and sell it forward.

This is kinda good starting point, then limiting the amount of apps installed to minimum, eg. if one can use browsers private mode for example facebook, why install the app which is known to suck everything it can and battery too?

Nothing I didn't already know, but it's scary just the same. Also funny how Facebook does(did) this and a lot more - nobody bats an eye. Then Chinese app does this, its end of the world... Please note: this is not intended to be a politically charged or motivated response, and it is certainly not intended to be ANTI political in any way. I am simply responding to the post above. That's true, there does seem to be a double standard. But I think it's because FB was designed and originates in California within the borders of Continental North America and is goverened by a "free world" democratic society...so people within NA feel safe about handing over data. But China is way overseas, and is under Communist rule which is foreign to us here. So naturally we are skeptical and feel unsafe because we fear what we do not know-- though I am of the mind that there is plenty to be concerned about where the Chinese (or North Korean, or Russian for that matter) government is concerned. But that's just me. But I have a general distrust and discomfort with any Social Media platform; for me, my private life is my private life. It's called a "private life" for a reason. I don't feel the need to share everything I do, every detail about my life with millions of people all over the world. But I do question apps and other modern tech that says it "requires permission to....." and then collects forms of data (from PC or phone) that is seemingly unrelated. For example the "Super Bright Smartphone LED Flashlight" app found on the Google play Store requires permission to access your Contacts, Make Phone Calls, Delete contents of SD Card (if installed).......Why???? It's only turning on/off the camera flash to act as a flashlight! Simple electronics. There is no reason for that purpose to require permission to collect other data and perform all of those other functions. (shady). Then you look further into the App Permissions and discover where the App originated from/who created it, and where said information is being sent: Russia and/or China. (at this point red flags should be waving wildly!) Why does all that kind of other information need to be sent to Russia or China just so you can turn on your camera flash to act as a flash light???????? So yeah, it's shady. But people don't take the time to delve into the App Permissions to find out what it says it requires access to, what other info it is collecting and where said info is being sent.

Rule of thumb with software, whether it is on your phone, tablet, console or PC...if it is free to use, you are not the customer. You are the product.

I see a lot of folks that I worked with overseas using it, then just posting on instagram with it. I have the app, but I've never used it. I don't want the Chinese government to see what I'm doing, especially if I go back into the military.

Umm... not quite so much on desktop software, and how about OSS? On phones one must be much more careful, especially on Android... (Then again some people also put google and android to the massive data collection stack)

(Then again some people also put google and android to the massive data collection stack) That's why it's a "rule of thumb" and not a "rule" . But software is fairly nebulous. We are using free software right now, talking to each other. Are we Proboards customers (at least in the traditional sense)? Nope, because we're not paying them anything. The customers are the companies who pay to advertise. No argument about needing to be more careful on a smartphone, though. That is a given.

But people don't take the time to delve into the App Permissions to find out what it says it requires access to, what other info it is collecting and where said info is being sent. whats funny is the big tech firms are far more nefarious than some state actor who doesnt give two figs about you or your personal habits unless you owe them money via one of there cash cows (Chinese born international companies) companies like facebook however collate everything they can from you, record everything said within range of the nearest microphone, tabulate all interaction you have and your habits online, and then sell all that information to whoever wants it for a bargain price, oh and any data you upload/send or receive via one of there apps they claim IP over as part of your agreement to use there "free service"... google does the same only there not quite as blatant about it and of course they make sure anyone who pays the fees can read everythign in the cloud as well MS charges you a fee and then doesnt do this (yet) however if your on the "free" side of the line then they also do the same things... its all in the EULA /ToS /ToC so if your unaware of this you only have yourself to blame... also if your a creator or professional person and you still dont operate via paid services you only have yourself to blame/

So....Like I said, it's shady. I understand the EULA (End User License Agreement) as far as data collection is concerned, ensuring that you don't use their 'product' for things it was not intended for, or illegal purposes, or otherwise gray-area things that are financially profitable to you (such as software piracy, producing burned copies of the software such as a game or movie etc, and then selling it for a profit etc)
...But what I do not and have never agreed with is why any company says by allowing you to use their product they must in turn have the right to collect and/or track information on you such as personal, identifiable information, or even on-line patterns/habits, use that info to track you and/or also SELL the information to third party companies whether in your country of origin or elsewhere around the world.
And in many ways nowadays, just about every company is doing just that in some way, shape or form.....But they cloak it all in cleverly described 'legalese' within the EULA (which, let's face it-- no one actually reads) and other companies are not so blatant. FOr example, while both companies do this to varying degrees, there is definitely a wide degree of difference between the information-collection practices of Facebook (which has had several major lawsuits, court cases etc brought against them since 2009 for such things) and Microsoft. There is also a difference in public perception of these two companies: Micosoft, the company that develops Windows operating system, which about 84% of all PCs/Laptops/Workstations/Servers etc around the world run on....People need this, companies need this to run, and they trust it....so they perhaps don't think twice about what kind of information MS may be collecting in order to provide this service/platform to them.
But Facebook, the platform itself is sketchy (in my books)...Why post pictures, videos, personal information about yourself, your habits, your life struggles etc on the Web for hundreds, or hundreds of thousands of people to see? It's called a private life for a reason: It is meant to remain private. And the idea of "friends/followers"? Gimme a break. You may have a "friends list" of 20,000 people-- but do you REALLY know each any every one of those people? No. Even if your list was much smaller, say 50-- I would bet that on any given day you only talk and share intimate details of your life or your day with no more than 10 of those 50 people. So if that is the case, why have as many of 50 people on your "friends list". They are not your friends. Do you think the more you have, the bigger your list is, that it somehow makes you 'cooler' or more popular?
I admit, I was on Facebook for about six months about 13 years ago....But this was long before the question about Intellectual Property or Information Collection was ever raised. I used it to connect with a small handful of people that I knew in public school, but the novelty soon wore off and after about six months, I deleted all my photos, everything I had written and made sure to delete (not just deactivate) the account. I also then deleted the email address that was associated with that facebook account.
But it is for these reasons that I have resolved to never use facebook or any other form of popular Social Media ever again. Not Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Twitch, Vimeo, Pintrest, Skype, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Snapchat or any other popular platform. There's so many of them, I've lost track. I have a Google/Youtube account, though I rarely sign-in, and I do not have my own "Youtube Channel" as many others do.
For people who truly know me, they have my cellphone number and they know my landline number and/or email address. If they want/need to contact me, they know how to reach me. If they are interested in hearing about me, they can connect with me that way and they will ask.
