Is there anyone here who knows about computers. I've been having problems with my PC. I've tried looking it up, with no luck. YouTube videos are absolutely useless when it comes to this problem. I keep having what's called the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH or BSOD. The particular error I am encountering is the WHEA_Uncorrectable_Error message. I mostly happens when I play a graphically demanding game like Final Fantasy XV. For months I haven't been able to narrow down the route cause for this. Online, it says to check what is called mini dump files on my computer. These Dump files report on any recent crash, especially with the BSOD. I used a program to open the dump file, however I don't know how to save the file for other people to read it, so I took a few screencaps: Can anyone tell me what this means? I'm at my wits end with all of this. I can't find a solution.

I can point you to two pieces of software used to analyze them, www.resplendence.com/whocrashed and www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html - I'd go first for the first one as it usually can tell more human readable results. Microsoft database said 'If you see the text “WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR,” it means that a hardware error has occurred.' Hardware error can be from not properly seated memorystick/gpu card, driver error or a broken hardware... www.makeuseof.com/tag/fix-whea-uncorrectable-error-windows-10/How are your temps?

My guess - it has to be a guess because I can't read out much from the messages -, is that the problem is in your graphics system, either your graphics driver, or the hardware itself, your graphics card.
If you don't have one, it's your CPU's graphics and the problem is the same, but also question if your CPU gets enough cooling.
Suggestions to try, question your graphics driver, reduce graphics settings.

Download "WHO CRASHED" to try and diagnose what the cause of the problem is. Immediately after you have a random BSOD, after your system recovers Windows-- before you do anything else, run "WHO Crashed" and it is usually good at diagnosing what the cause of the BSOD was. If that doesn't help, run MEMTest and test each of your RAM sticks for errors. Test each stick individually, and then once all sticks have been tested seperately, test thing in different combinations with each other, using two at a time. Lastly, test them using two, then three, then four etc etc. until you are able to test all of them for the total complement
If you think it may be your GPU, if you can test your GPU in a different system and run it for a day....

This is what Who Crash says about the recent dump file. It says the same thing for the other dump files, as well.

This is what Who Crash says about the recent dump file. It says the same thing for the other dump files, as well. You could put it to do complete crash dumps if such happens as the program says. Unfortunately I kinda guessed this as hardware errors are hard to catch. It might be at this point, anything, but do a memory check to be sure for that part.

I agree with Unicephalon 40-D. If Who Crashed has also determined it to be a hardware error, your next step should be to run MemTest (you can download the 32 bit version here: www.memtest86.com/ ) OR the 64-bit version here: www.techpowerup.com/download/techpowerup-memtest64/ in order to diagnose any errors with your RAM. And if you are going to do this, the best way is as I said in my previous post to test each module individually, then two at a time in different combinations with each other, then three, then four and so on, until you have all modules installed and can test the full complement. As for your GPU, do you notice anything else any other oddities that could help determine a GPU problem? (telltale signs of GPU issues are screen turning funny colours, green, blue, red, multi-coloured; artifacting which causes any 3D modeling to appear stretched (you would notice this during a gaming session, for example) random loss of picture/signal; PC fans suddenly going into overdrive and being very loud (this is because one or more of the GPU fans has stopped working, so the case fans have to work overtime. Your GPU will also become very hot to touch if this happens because it's not getting enough cooling) Lastly, a less common problem that could help determine if a GPU is at fault, is in a gaming session for example...the audio will hang and/or loop continuously. This is most likely because the (Nvidia HD Audio as an example) drivers are corrupted. To further help diagnose a GPU issue (particularly looking for display discolouration and artifacting), a good tool to test for such things is a benchmarking tool like HEAVEN 4.0. Not typically what it is used for, I know, but it's actually useful for this purpose if you know what to look for. And lastly, the other way you can test to see if the GPU is indeed at fault in any way is to put it into another PC and run it in that machine for a few days, maybe a week to see if you have the same problems. Covering all the bases here.....If you want to test for CPU problems, if you think it may be a CPU issue, there is a CPU stress testing program (operates in very similar fashion to MEMTest for RAM) that can be downloaded here: www.mersenne.org/download/#source. For SSD/HDD problems, your SSD should come with a diagnosis/monitoring type software that enables you to keep an eye on different features/factors such as read/write performance, temperature, disk health etc. (my bootable drive, for example, is a samsung 950 Pro M.2 and samsung's software is called Magician). Intel drives have their own called something else as do most if not all other brands these days. Try running your respective software to find SSD errors. My very last piece of advice is to make sure all that ALL your Drivers and Windows updates are absolutely current. If all of your Drivers and Windows components are absolutely up-to-date, and yet you are still having the problem...my last piece of advice would be to roll back Windows to an earlier date prior to when this error began. You can do this by using a Windows Restore Point. Not a pleasant thing to have to do, but it is often the best last line of defense when you come up against an Error that is continuously persisting without a solution. Roll back Windows to an earlier date, and when that is completed successfully you can then begin updating Windows again with clean, fresh updates along with all of the GPU Drivers. For the GPU Drivers it is absolutely crucial that you re-install the Drivers performing a Clean Install. This can be done by slecting the "Custom Installation" option (if you use an Nvidia GPU)....I'm not sure about ATI/AMD, though they must have something similar. Under "Custom Installation" check the box at the bottom left corner that reads "Perform a Clean Install". This will delete all previous GPU profiles and any settings you may have had that could have been corrupted, and replace it all with new/clean versions and basic default 'profiles'. You will then have to reset your AV Firewall Permissions for various GPU related things, so just click YES or ACCEPT for anything related to the GPU that is wanting to gain access through your AV's firewall). When everything is re-installed with a clean, fresh install and new updates. Restart your computer. I hope this helps you to determine the problem. For more information on the root cause(s) of the WHEA Stop Code and their respective solutions, please read the link below win10supports.com/whea_uncorrectable_error-on-windows-10-how-to-fix-2/

A crash happened again, but this time when after logging back in after restarting from a Windows Update. Same bug check file as the rest of them. Saying it came from the Windows kernel. Also there is one Windows Update that continuously fails to install. "There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. 2020-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4565483) - Error 0x800f0831"
Also worth noting is that every time I activate my PC it takes me to the "American Megatrends" screen, forcing me to go to the boot menu to manually boot the computer. Some have said it's related to the CMOS battery?

Hi MassEffectfanforlife: I googled your error code that popped up after installing your Windows Update and found this solution: support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4477073/error-0x800f0831-when-you-install-an-updateIt's not uncommon to get error codes when installing Windows Updates, saying that "some components could not be installed....blah blah blah. We will try again later." In my experience with such warnings, trying again later is often the fix. I would suggest however, that you temporarily disable/suspend your Antivirus protection as that can sometimes be a cause for interference. My advice is to 1) Restart your PC 2) Disable/Suspend your AV 3) Try re-installing the Windows Update again. Depending on if the Installation is SUCCESSFUL.....Restart your PC once more, and then everything should (hopefully) be in working order. If the installation still was unsuccessful, don't worry.....simply try again tomorrow. I have had several Windows Updates fail to install on a particular day...so I wait until the next day or the day after, then try again....and surprisingly I am met with success. In regards to always entering the BIOS after Posting....Yes, that does sound like a CMOS Battery issue, but those are inexpensive and very easy to replace. It will look like a large watch battery. You can get them for anywhere 3.00 to 8.00 dollars Canadian, less than that if you deal with USD and you can find them at your local PC Store. Just tell a store rep that you need a CMOS Battery replacement. The most important thing to take not of is the model number that you need for your motherboard. The number will be written on the existing battery in your Board. It is usually placed in the center of the Board below the CPU socket and physically underneath the GPU on most manufacturers' Boards. Most coin batteries are 1220 or 2032 and have a corresponding Voltage. All this information is written on the battery, so take note of what is on the existing battery before you remove it from your motherboard, and then simply ask a store rep for the exact same battery. Then swap out the replacement inserting it into the Board in exactly the same position (face up or down) you removed the original. Note: The easiest way to tell if your CMOS Battery needs to be replaced is looking for these simple quarks: 1) a pure tone eminating from your motherboard; an incessant "BEEEEEEEP" 2) You notice that the Clock and Calendar in the System Tray is way off and is not keeping the correct date and time. (That is one thing the CMOS is responsible for, keeping the System's date/time in sync.) 3) If you are in the BIOS and you happen to notice the Voltages are really really high (well above Factory Default levels) and you have not done any OverClocking. The CMOS is also responsible for maintaing the voltage levels.

Check your motherboard's User Manual to be sure what the Factory Default settings should be.

Should be some of these keys: F1/F2/F8 or Delete key press in the American Megatrends "screen" - usually it should also read there somewhere, but this depends a lot on the BIOS itself.

If anyone is interested, this is my rig: Monitor - 2560x1440 GPU - RTX 2060 6GB VRAM RAM - 12GB CPU - i7-4790k PSU - CX750m
Also worth noting is that I locked Final Fantasy XV's framerate to 37fps via Nvidia Control Panel (37.5 because my monitor is 75hz), and the crash has not happened when playing since. However, that's what worries me. It could happen again, anytime, when I least expect it. When the error happens the screen freezes & there's a horrible buzzing noise in my headphone speakers, then switches to the BSOD. That's the reason why I turn the volume all the way down when testing the game. This is probably why I haven't played any specific game for some time, because this error comes within warning. Even if fixed, who knows if it is or not?
Update: I had the CMOS Battery switched, and it still takes me to the American Megatrends screen. UGH

Post by Energizer Bunny 211 on Jul 16, 2020 18:29:11 GMT
HI again, Massefffectfan.....The issue of the problem occurring so randomly, I can relate. I had the same thing happen with that Acer Predator monitor I recently returned. The random loss of picture/signal happened so randomly, so infrequently I could fool myself into thinking it didn't happen at all. Until it did. After many weeks of researching, trouble-shooting/testing and frustration I finally concluded that it was a faulty G-Sync Module. So I wholehearted understand your frustration with the troubleshooting given a problem that occurs at random and is difficult to reproduce with consistency. I will continue to help you as much as I can.
But going back to your comment about the audio freezing and buzzing.....After doing some research, it is my assessment that there are three possible causes, of varying degree of concern and hassle/expense to fix. In my assessment, I will give you what I think is the worst case (and most expensive to replace) first, down to the least expensive/problematic.
The biggest concern is caused by a voltage issue with your Power Supply. If you have a Multimeter that is used to test voltages of electronic circuitry or fuses (such as the output of a power socket in your house, or the fuse panel that controls the output to your house), you can connect your PSU to a multimeter to test the voltage regulation. If it falls within the standards found in your product manual, it is still okay to use. Otherwise, it is advisable to replace your power supply if you suspect there is a short.
If you have tested your RAM as I suggested in previous threads-- if you have found faults, you can consult the manufacturer's website for their Return POlicy. If it is not an actual defect, the issue may be easier to determine.
A second reason for the freezing/buzzing audio is a lack of Memory (RAM) resources. Your RAM is probably storing too many Temporary files, so it is recommended that your clean off your HD/SSD and delete the Temporary files. There are three common areas where your Temp files are stored (not just Temporary Internet Files but other types as well that are created whenever you access different file types/programs such as games, Adobe products etc) I will tell you how to clean off these common temporary files. The steps will be the same for each location, so the only change will be Step 2- the command you type in each time.
1) Press Windows key + R to bring up the 'Run' prompt
2) type %temp%
3) Press CTRL + A to highlight all of the files
4) hit 'DELETE' key. Note: If there are any files where it says it can not delete 'file x' say "Skip" to leave that file alone. This is okay.
Next, follow the same steps as above, but this time change the command to 'Prefetch'.
Lastly, same as before....changing the new command to simply "Temp"
Remember to skip over any file the system says it can not delete.
A third possible cause is a corrupted audio driver in the GPU or the Audio Codec (firmware) on your Motherboard. In either case, consult the respective manufacturer's website for an update and download new Drivers. faulty Audio Codecs are not uncommon and can usually be fixed with an updated patch provided by the motherboard manufacturer.
I hope this is helpful. Please contact me again if you continue to have problems and I will do my best to assist you however I can

One piece of hardware that could be causing that problem of WHEA Uncorrectable Error--I forgot to mention it earlier as it is low on the list of suspects.....Is your motherboard. Contact your manufacturer (which I believe is ASUS based on the BIOS; ASUS typically uses American MegaTrends the most though I may be wrong), contact your company and/or consult your User Manual and take steps to flash the BIOS and update it to the newest version available. Or perhaps you can RMA your board and have them do it professionally. Another option is to take it to a PC Store and pay someone there to do it for you. But I caution you, flashing the BIOS on your own, can be very tricky and lead to further problems if it is not done right. Do this at your own risk or comfort level.
One final possibility for the root cause that I forgot to mention of all the things I can possibly think of-- The Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 feature. I recently ran into a stop code on my own PC and it was caused by my Intel TurboBoost 3.0 being out of date, without a Driver Update to patch it. I never used it for OC'ing etc, though I know it's primary purpose was to offload heavy work to whatever core it determined to be the fastest. And it did this automatically. So, helpful. But not necessary. The TurboBoost 2.0 on your 4790K could also be a possible cause for this. I disabled this feature from starting/running in the System Tray....and viola, problem solved: no more Stop Codes.
To Disable it: Press Windows key +R and type "Services.msc" (without quotations) Listings are alphabetical, so scroll down to I and look for Intel Turbo Boost. right-click and go to Properties. Then click 'disable' and then hit Apply. After that is done, restart your system.
If even that does not solve the problem......
At this point, my advice would be to back-up everything you can onto an external or internal secondary drive.....then completely wipe and format your SSD and re-install Windows fresh and to a complete overhaul from top to bottom making sure that everything is fresh and clean. That would include a new install of Windows and necessary Windows Updates, Clean Installation of all Drivers etc and re-installing all your programs/games that you backed-up on your secondary SSD or flashdrive.
If the problem STILL persists even after you have reinstalled everything fresh....my only other advice would be then too begin looking at replacing parts that you feel are most likely the cause of the problem. These could be RAM, GPU, PSU. If I was going to think about replacing one of those parts mentioned, I (personally) would begin with the RAM as that is the most likely to be fully covered under a limited life-time warranty and be of no cost to you. The next step would be to RMA your GPU, and provided it is still under warranty, it should also be of no cost to you. Lastly look at replacing the power supply unit.
I am sorry that you are experiencing so much trouble. I can tell you from years of PC Troubleshooting experience and facing problems over the years with PCs and Troubleshooting, that it is not fun. There are many sleepless nights spent worrying about what the problem is and why it can not be fixed. Also, the money factor; potentially several thousand dollars on expensive hardware that you want to enjoy but can't. It is very frustrating and at times can seem like a waste of money. But I can assure you, there is a solution for everything. It may take some time, and maybe even lead you down a path that is not entirely desirable (like paying out of pocket to replace certain parts) but eventually you will solve this problem.

Buzzing sound will always happen if theres data in audio buffer, there is no more data coming, it will repeat the last block until STOP is finished I guess. Thats a normal thing if something crashes hard.

Well, I tried something different for the past few days.I used Nvidia Control Panel to decrease the fps for FFXV by half. There were no crashes, until today. I switched the fps setting back to default (nvidia settings), and it crashed. I switched it back to the half framerate setting, and it crashed again. Well, I can throw that solution away. This is bullshit...

You have reseated GPU? Newer driver? a few days ago I installed a new driver. It was reseated yesterday after putting in a new CMOS battery. It didn't crash yesterday after reseating the gpu. Now, why isn't isn't this easy enough to find the root cause for this problem? Since it's a hardware error (WHEA) why is the computer incapable of pointing out which hardware is causing this issue, like the RAM, or CPU, etc.?

You have reseated GPU? Newer driver? a few days ago I installed a new driver. It was reseated yesterday after putting in a new CMOS battery. It didn't crash yesterday after reseating the gpu. Now, why isn't isn't this easy enough to find the root cause for this problem? Since it's a hardware error (WHEA) why is the computer incapable of pointing out which hardware is causing this issue, like the RAM, or CPU, etc.? Curious, prior to when you physically disconnected and then reconnected the GPU into the PCI-E socket, did you happen to notice any GPU sagging? As if the PCIE pins on the GPU were not completely in the socket....Did it feel loose at all? Did you see any actual drooping or sagging which might suggest a partial or intermittent loss of contact in the socket? I'm asking because you said you reseated the GPU in the socket yesterday and there wasn't any crashing. Perhaps making sure to firmly connect the card into the socket was all that was needed....? If this could be the case, I would suggest you double-check how the RAM modules are sitting in their respective sockets. Perhaps doing as you did with the GPU and physically reseat each module with a firm push to make sure it is secure....just to be safe. Unfortunately, as per your last comment about pin-pointing exactly which hardware is at fault....more often than not, unfortunately, Trouble-shooting PC issues is never that cut and dry. It is more often a long and arduous process of elimination. There are however, problems that are so blatant and symptom clusters so unique that in some cases it is obvious what piece of hardware is at fault. For example, massive amounts of artificating and severe screen discolouration and/or the screen going completely black and losing picture is a telltale sign of a GPU failure. However even in those cases, the process of actually solving the problem can be a long one.
