I prefer approval/disapproval to friendship/rivalry, because I'd rather have the possibility for companions to actually dislike my character rather than liking them in a more combative way (which often came off as really strange to me in DA2).
But I prefer either one to ME2's loyalty mechanic. Having it be an on/off quest-dependant thing doesn't feel very organic to me, especially with it being tied to survival outcomes.

I tend to think of characters who don't like my PC but stay anyway as coworkers who are invested in the job/organization or are using it as a means to an end for themselves. They may talk shit about me when I'm not in the room, but they aren't going to quit just because I snapped at them. Similarly, I think of gifts to them not as bribes (though they certainly could be if I'm playing a big enough ass) but as acknowledgement of their importance to the team or a bonus for a job well done. These people may become my friends, as coworkers often do, but they don't need to be to work together. Now I want a companion to decline an invitation to the group's night at the tavern because they have their own personal life and can't stand to be around their boss another minute. The sycophants can whisper about it in the corner half the night.

It would be nice to be able to have both (a la, the mentioned grid system), but if that is programming overload, I voted for the DA2 model. I think it would be interesting to give the Friendship/Rivalry system another go, with whatever tweaks they may want to try. I enjoyed my Varric and Fenris rivalries, and even my Merrill Rivalmance (though admittedly, hers had special functionality. Her Friendship rating was really high because of some similar beliefs, but my Hawke doesn't play nice with demons, and he is against Blood Magic, so during her personal quest, Hawke withheld the relic, and her status flipped to the opposite spectrum). Sometimes, companions can try to accomplish their goals without the input, or approval, of the player character.

Approval and closeness.
I really don't like how it's merged together in DA:O & DA:I. If I do their quests, talk to them and bring them with me, we should be close. It really shouldn't mean I have to kiss their ass and agree with them on everything just to be close.

I tink: DAO was the best, but i hate the gifts and it can be improved. DA2 wasn't good i don't like the system. DAI was complicated because it was a organisation. The system was bad selected.
My wish DAO/DAI, but the companion which have a standing role, like leliana, cassandra, cullen and josephine in DAI should be handled differently. plus no gifts and romance should be separated from it. I get annoyed about it every time. you only click the heart button or do what the companions want and they love you. That isn't what i want. I want a look or something different to show i am interessted and than begin the romance (they should like different typs. For example solas only like elven femal.), but if i do something the character didn't like it is harder for him to go or he stayed but argue the hole time. so have Approval/Disapproval but mix with Love/Hate or something like that. What i have mention: I hate that in DA2 everyone can have everyone. In real live i don't love every person. So Solas an Cullen was good. It would be better it is not only the look or gender or race which counts but even the behavior. with that i don't mean choices, but i mean if someone is sweet or agreesive. I know i want to much, but i want to told you.
