Doing a maleShep playthrough now (in ME2) and wow I forgot how boring he is. Not just in comparison to femShep, but any of the protagonists in Bioware games (barring silent ones). I’m the opposite weirdly. Femshep is a chore to me. Which is reverse of Bioware norm... Jade Empire is entirely female PC and DA is 80 percent that. All of that 20 percent male is because of Morrigan abd Cass 😂 But then I think it is down not just to romances, but voices: while not awful in Inquisition, how can you not go with Trayno... I mean Alix?! And Hawke is just a woman. Never even touched a make Hawke. It sounds too off. But with Hale v Meer? Unpopular in areas but Meer is Shepard. Hale’s delivery sometimes wavered into “why do you sound like that?! Not how it should be said!” whereas Meer’s voice is perfect from 2 and 3 and only stilted in 1 because apparently he was placeholder turned lead. Not saying Hale isn’t great, but it’s like Inquisition... one of the other actors was just perfect for the role.

He still sounds very stilted in 2 to me, with a lot of times making the character seem like they don’t care about what’s happening. MEA did a lot better job with Scott and Sara. While I prefer Sara, it’s not because of the acting but because they made her a bit of a nerd compared to her brother which I liked.

I think he gets better and better each game. FemShep is solid, but oft overacted. I think she gets a bit worse each game, though never bad, just not to my taste. Both Hawkes are very good. The male Inquisitor sounds like a weenie to me, though I learned to enjoy him well enough. The performance was very good. Alix Wilton Regan is great. I've not done a playthrough, but I bet Sumalee is good. I've heard her in other roles. I can't tolerate Sara Ryder. She's terrible. It sucks, because I usually try to split my play 50/50, male/female. Scott is phenomenally well acted; one of the best VA performances I've ever experienced. So, I'd put Meers' Shepard in the middle of the pack, ahead of FemShep and others, but behind some of the DA cast.

While I enjoy both, I've said it before - Meer gave the more solid performance overall. Not once did I go, "Why did you say it like THAT?" during my run with Sheploo. A bunch of times, especially in ME 2 and ME 3 did I really question why Hale delivered a line a certain way. I love Jennifer Hale; she's amazing and do enjoy a FemShep run. But there's just a handful of lines (not counting talking to Jacob) that make me just kinda go, "...Why did you say it like that?"
Really broke the immersion for me. Some were worse than others. People say that Meer wasn't great delivering the Paragon lines, but damn...I thought he sounded authentic as an Alliance Marine in some of those, like when telling Reeger to stand down. Loved also the "We could go back in and get you exiled, if you want?" tone from Tali's LM. I just laughed so hard when I heard him deliver that.

I dunno, maybe I'm weird, most videogame protagonist just blur together at this point. I generally prefer Meer but I love them both, they both have lines they deliver better than the other. Its kinda funny, you often read similar complaints for either of them, just from different people.
They really didn't have a whole lot to work with, especially as the series went along, so I appreciate the job they did, but other things took importance. You can tell there lines were written last, or with much less thought. The companion characters, the story, and the setting, are very much the focal point.

While i do recognize he had his moments as Shep he also soubded better as the Vorcha. You will regret your scandalous words! I am a great wind that will sweep all before me like a... a great wind! A great biotic wind! Yes, the Asari injecting so many drugs into me was terrifying, but then I began to smell my greatness! They may laugh when I fall over, but they don't know what I know in my head... that I know that I am amazingly powerful! Fear me.

Alix Wilton Regan is great. Of course she is. Look how well she voiced Samantha. Bioware liked her voice enough to be used for the dlc trailers released for DAI. It would be nice if her voice returned for ME4. I could listen to Alix read the phone book. That woman's voice is enchanting; and she's an excellent actress on top of it.

Actually i wouldn't mind hearing i inquisitor or fem shep i spired gps. The FemShep GPS voice could be awkward. Its tone might sound so sexually charged that your wife gets mildly annoyed. 😆 I'd enjoy a FemShep GPS that yelled orders at me. "Turn right, on the double, mister!"

I generally lean towards male voices overall. I really like Mark Meer's take on BroShep and Tom Taylorson's take on Scott Ryder. I much prefer Jennifer Hales performance as Astrid in The Long Dark as opposed to her performance as FemShep. The romantic tension between her and Mark Meer at the start of that story is just perfect.
In Fallout 4 though, I prefer Courtey Taylor's voice as the female Sole Survivor to whoever it was that played the male. I also like Brandon Keener's voice (Garrus) and he's a solid performer, but I got kind of tired of hearing his voice since he's just used so much. When playing Fallout 4, it's almost like every NPC in the game winds up sounding like Garrus.

Doesn’t hurt that their romances are as equal as well and get w chance to truly flourish. I want more Ryder... Shepard got three games. Give two more with the awesome siblings damn it! 😤

Yes. That's exactly why I love him in this role. He's calm, collected and in control. He has moments when strong emotion is appropriate and he acts accordingly. In general, BroShep/Meers is very convincing for me as an experienced, SpecOps officer. Everyone enjoys different things, and taste is always subjective. We are fortunate to have a bunch of good performances in all these games. Hopefully everyone has at least one they really enjoy. I feel like I should correct myself in regard to Sara Ryder/Fryda Wolff. She's not objectively "terrible"; though I assume everyone knows my opinion is never intended to be objective. This was her first big role. The character aggravates the hell out of me, but I blame the voice direction for that more than Fryda.
Absolutely; there's no wrong way to enjoy Mass Effect because we're all fans at the end of the day. Like Hanako said, I loved Fryda's portrayal of Sara because she came off as this big dork, which I loved. Tom did pretty good himself too; it's really unfair to compare him to Meer's Shep, because the two characters are completely different. But both of them did good.
And yes, Jennifer Hale is fantastic to listen to always. She's still great as FemShep; just I'd change a few lines in the series that just sounded off for me. But that's just my own experience; it was still a great performance overall.

Give two more with the awesome siblings damn it! 😤 I've said this before as well - Andromeda to me felt like ME 1 - kinda a new thing, lots of exposition dump, and characters that were giant blank slates that you had to learn about to find a connection with. While I felt that the Andromeda crew was missing that "something" to make me latch onto them, I chalk that more up to writing than I do acting. I think they deserve at least one more game (I wouldn't say two yet). I think if the writing was just a bit better for the characters (I really don't know what was missing that would make me latch onto them), I think you could have a decent game, one that would do better than Andromeda.
Except for Liam....there's no saving him....

1. I like Sarah Ryder. So there. 2. New patch today fixed the credit carryover from ME:1 to 2. No more buying out every single store right from the get-go. Ah well - was nice while it lasted.
It's also apparently fixed the problem with SPECTRE gear not being available in ME:1.

ME3MP phantoms are only a threat to a low level/new player or one being surrounded by other NPCs to support it. O rly? Post some videos of your Cerberus Platinum solos. Please pretty please. I would like to see you wreck them. I can, but they still wreck me plenty. Yes. Please. Lemme watch und learn….. (will be waiting a looooong time methinks….)

Damn. Commander Shepard's everywhere have been robbed! Limiting credits that can be carried over from ME1 to ME2 to that extent seems like a massive overcorrection. Hopefully our ME3 Shepard's get some pocket change one of these days then, the price to purchase a lot of that gear is kind of insane. Yeah.... balancing a single player game "economy" is knuckle-dragging assholery.
