Just finished watching the first episode of The Last of Us on HBO. Ugh, I hate zombies, and parasites, and creepy things in general. The girl playing Ellie looks familiar but no idea where I may have seen her before. Her name didn't ring any bells when I saw it in a review a few days ago.
Anyone else watching? I haven't played the game/s....are they even available on PC? Some of the camera work early on (the driving sequence) made it seem like they were trying to emulate the video game 1st person perspective. Can't say I cared for it but then, I don't like playing action/rpg games in FPP. Point and click adventure games, sure, but there's not much movement in those so I don't get dizzy.
Just finished the episode myself and LOVED it. Probably the best first episode of a videogame adaptation I've ever seen. I never played the game myself, I watched a cinematic playthrough though. Liked the narrative but found the game slightly overrated. But I guess when you're young this would blow your mind. Me, I went "oh, one of those endings." *g* It was so long ago though, so my memory is fuzzy. Reading comments on Reddit about the stuff they did change right now. Most of them I would handwave, not having spores be a thing is kinda crap but I get it that they don't want to film people wearing masks most of the time. Funny how people are complaining the show is too faithful to the game and therefore boring. Really can't win with fans... If the Witcher had turned out half as good I'd have been satisfied. This looks VERY promising. Tons better than The Walking Dead already. I didn't really read any info on the show prior. So is this gonna be a miniseries or are multiple seasons planned? (I know I can just look this up myself...) I'd prefer miniseries. I'm so sick of stuff getting cancelled after one season that I don't feel like watching any show anymore that isn't finished. No point getting invested in anything these days. Since I do know how TLOU ends I'll watch this and hope for the best.

Finished the 4th season of Westworld. I gotta say, I kinda understand why HBO canceled the show after this season. I loved the first 3 seasons of Westworld. I liked that the show always changed the setting radically between seasons and wasn't afraid to reinvent itself a little bit. I also liked the premises that each of the seasons had some deeper questions to ask: The search for consciousness in machines in the first one, the search for the "code of consciousness" in humans vs. machines for the second and the search for free will vs. determinism in the third. That way, the very grim setting with all the violence and uncaring characters was offset by a sense of wonder and deeper purpose. Unfortunately, I couldn't see this in the fourth season, which simply seems to describe an ongoing conflict between the hosts and the humans without a deeper truth to be had. There are some interesting twists and turns throughout the season, so it's got that going for it but ultimately, it just doesn't stack up to what came before and it feels like the showrunners kept going to tell just something random in this universe simply because they are earning a paycheck with it. In short, the series has lost its spark in the 4th season. Add to that a finale that is probably the most nihilistic I have ever seen and you certainly will not come out of this series with any feeling of satisfaction. did read the showrunners had plans for a season 5 before they learned that HBO would not continue and who knows, maybe they would have turned it around but now we'll never know. As it stands, the finale work as an ending IMO. Given that we won't get anything else my most favorable take on it now is that the series loops back on itself. Dolores will simulate the park and the world around it as is in her test and one could simply start watching season 1 again and loop it upon itself time and time again as simulations within simulations within simulations are created. While not and entirely new idea, it does kind work as a bit of a mindfuck ending but presonally, it doesn't give me particularly much. Bit of a shame really. As I said, I love seasons 1-3 and would have very much liked for this series to close on another high note. Alas, while Dolores may choose to see the beauty in this world, I can't help but to also see the ugliness sometimes. Season 4 has to content itself with a mere 6/10 parasitic flies.

Been catching up on Bart Ehrman's Misquoting Jesus podcast on Youtube. Really awesome free content, Bart is that are combination of an accomplished/respected scholar who is also a great communicator and speaker. He's the Stephen Hawking of the history of early Christianity/the New Testament. Great sense of humor too. Well recommended for any history/religion nerds out there: Misquoting Jesus podcast

Watched S2 of Raised By Wolves fully aware it's yet another cancelled show. Totally batshit crazy. LOVED IT. Now I'm super depressed about the cancellation. Sigh.
Ep 2 of The Last Of Us was really really good! It's refreshing to see that not all game adaptations are crap. The way Tess went out... GOOD GRIEF!
I really like the changes they made now. Makes the infected even scarier. Can't wait to watch the rest of the episodes.
Currently two episodes into The Devil's Hour. Not bad. Definitely drawing me in even though so far it feels like a combination of all kinds of tropes. So I hope the ending isn't disappointing.

There was great promise, but in the end Westworld never delivered, which is a pitty. That was a perfect opportunity to contemplate how biological and artificial entities could live together, while handling subjects like self-awareness and intelligent life, perhaps even life itself. But, this is the brainless era. -Yes, a pun aimed at zombie shows.

TLOU episode 3 was not what I expected but I loved it. That couple's story was the sweetest thing I've seen in a while. Couldn't stop smiling. Perfect ending passing the torch to Joel in a sense.
Top notch storytelling so far. I'm impressed.
Also finished The Devil's Hour. I read there's gonna be a be a second and third season. Funny how all the shows I watch as a miniseries expecting a finished story get multiple ones (like White Lotus) and the stuff I think will get more seasons for sure gets cancelled, lol. So, there wasn't really anything surprising happening. You kinda already know where it's going after episode 2 and the rest of the episodes just confirm it and the final episode is just one long explanation of the details. Not a particularly original show but at the same time so well acted and presented that I still want to know where they'll be going with it. The interesting thing isn't what was going on but what is the endgame here. I hope the show goes wild. Wouldn't mind the story stretching out over decades following Isaac as he grows up. Supposedly they did plan the story as a 3 act story. So I hope they do have a proper plan. And I hope Amazon doesn't decide to cancel it after all if S2 bombs. Renewed does not mean they can't take it back. Don't trust any of these streaming services anymore. *paranoid eyes*
Also started watching Ghosts, that British show about a young couple moving into a mansion where ghosts live that the woman can see but he can't. It's... all right. Nothing amazing but kinda cute.

I binge watched the Willow series. This made me think so much of the 80s/early90s fantasy campy awesomeness I loved as a kid. Lots of reference to the original movie. Not as good of a music score thought. There is also a lots of other Lucasfilm references. Also, it started a bit rough, but the acting, directing, pacing and editing got better as the show went along. I hope it gets a second season, I need to see Airk interacting with the gang.

Episode 4 of TLOU was disappointingly "short" at 53min. Felt really rushed. Worst episode so far. And I made the mistake of rewatching the game and now I like the show less and less because I'm one of the few (?) people who don't like the acting of Ellie's actress at all. They perfectly recreated one iconic scene shot for shot and yet I couldn't help but think it was much better in the game because game Ellie is actually cute and charming and the actress is so wooden in comparison.
So now I'm nitpicking the same way I inevitably always do when I know the source material. And I really don't want to do that. I hate it but I can't stop it. I don't really like how soft TV Joel is. They aged him even more up from 52 to 56 and gave him bad knees and hearing loss. And while that is realistic it kind of ruins the idea of the scary AF killing machine that he's been for 20 years. Weakening the transition that he goes through opening up and allowing himself to love somebody again. How is an old man who gets ambushed because he can't hear well supposed to keep that girl safe now that Tess doesn't have his back anymore? I get that game Joel is a ridiculous action hero and that's not realistic. But I'm not a fan of making Joel so deliberately old.
The show has introduced a new faction, changing the game's story quite a bit at this point. Very on the fence about this rebellion leader woman. First time I didn't really like the show's original content. On the other hand, Joel's execution of this young guy was haunting. The acting of the dude was phenomenal. So that was the strongest scene of the entire episode.
TV Sam is much younger and apparently deaf? Let's see where this goes. I hope this doesn't mean they changd the outcome of their story. The TV show has toned down the violence at lot. Most of it happens off screen. But Sam and Henry NEED to go down exactly the same way or people are going to be pissed.
Wrong thread but I've been reading a Joel/Tess fic and it's one of the most moving emotionally raw things I've ever come across. A beautiful character study of two broken people. Just blows my mind how real this feels. Like this would be exactly what could have happened if she had lived. And it's LONG. 39 chapters and not finished and I've read 23 over several days, spending my entire evenings doing nothing but reading. Spent those days in a trance at work captivated by the writing and those emotions washing over me all day long as if I'm experiencing their pain and love myself. So best thing that happened is that a discussion thread about the show linked this fanfiction. I know this is the story about Joel and Ellie and it's great and the TV show is good but, damn, this other love story is on another level for me. But then again I'm a total sucker for complicated painful romances.

I watched the first episode of Fringe (2009) because a friend loves it (he adores Anna Torv). And that was the most campy badly acted stuff I've seen in a long time. Like it was watching a 90s show but not in a good way. Opening felt like an X Files episode but then it just got worse and worse.
I'm baffled this show is so highly rated. Is the pilot just bad or what?? I have no desire to watch more of this. Rarely do I not like a show my friend recommends but this was just awful. I have decided to never mention to my friend that I tried watching it, lol.
Anybody here like this show? It would have to get A LOT better for me to keep watching...

Sometimes you do not expect much from a move and it turns out to be better than you thought.
I got a movie from the library called 'The Man Who Invented Christmas' A fictitious tale of Charles Dickens and how he came to write 'A Christmas Carol'.
I'm quit a Dickens fan but didn'tt think this would be that good but it surprised me. No academy award winner but I enjoyed it.

Glass Onion. So much hype online but I wasn't a fan of the first movie and this one isn't much better. Feels like something I've seen done too many times before and much better at that. The characters are all stereotypes and the detective is a Hercule Poirot rip-off.

the Mandalorian / Episode 3.1 / Chapter 17 "the apostate" Happy that Mando and Grogu are back, still very much a setup "here are your quests" episode. Very surprised there wasn't a recap on how/why Grogu's back with Mando for the normies who might not know or have seen/read about Book of Boba Fett. quests / points of interest / thoughts - Fun "Mandalorian happy meal"-giant-croc-blasted-to-pieces-opener.
- I need more info on the various Mandalorian helmets/armor designs, colors and what they mean.
- the missing "Navarro" Marshall - I would know one, if he's out of the bacta tank > Cobb Vanth / Timothy Olyphant
- the pirate/handlangers vs Navarro's "major" and Mando
- the "Mandalore-Spa-redemption" quest - apparently only doable with a (un)trusty droid requiring parts
- Bo Katan is pouting, lonely without followers / still wants the dark saber
- Grogu's "not toys" tiny mechanics - endle$$ merchandi$e po$$ibilitie$

I will now watch it an additional 6 times before the next episode comes out
Probably also rewatch season 1, 2, and last half of the Book of Boba Fett too. I had planned on doing this in the week but yeah, that never happened.
