Morning All. So the case I have been using is the amazing H500M from CoolerMaster, I think I've had it since the summer of its release in 2018, but I can't find my proof of purchase. Nevertheless it's a great case. In the past I did not use the HDD cage (or the shroud that slid over the cage that matched the PSU shroud), but I do have two WD Blue 2 TB HDDs (one that has a bunch of digitized movies on it, back when I had a license for AnyDVD and Clone DVD/BD), but my cat knocked that drive in its external case off my desk, and although the drive itself was undamaged, something inside the external case got broken. And my cat has a really nasty, annoying habit of jumping up on my desk to look out my bedroom window and always walking around my desk, batting things around causing trouble....so I stopped using the external HDDs. Then thinking that blue drive was damaged (before I found out it was not) I went and bought a replacement drive. So now I have two WD Blue drives that I am not using...and yesterday I discovered that the movie drive did actually work perfectly fine and so I want to be able to put it to use since I also have a license for Power DVD 18 Ultra and I often like to watch movies on my PC in my room.
Trouble is, I have misplaced (or thrown out) the HDD cage and shroud that came with my Cooler Master case so I am left with the predicament and question of "do I bother to order a new piece from Cooler Master and install these drives and actually use them? If so, that means I have to create an account for CoolerMaster.....yet another online account to keep track of, UGH"
Or do I try to use a spare external case that my dad has, and try to find room on my desk/table for it?
OR do I just leave well enough alone, satisfied with the knowledge that the drive does work but not use it?
I can't make up my mind. And it is also driving me crazy trying to think of where I would have put it. I have visions of me throwing it out thinking I would never use it, that it was stupid, a pain in the ass and served no purpose (since I had transitioned to using 2.5 inch SSDs and an M.2 as my bootable)

I have visions of me throwing it out thinking I would never use it, that it was stupid, a pain in the ass and served no purpose (since I had transitioned to using 2.5 inch SSDs and an M.2 as my bootable) I don't have any spinning drives in the computer anymore. Not going back there again... but I do have some sitting around collecting dust. I wanted the option to use them, but didn't want to install them anywhere, so I got one of these cheap USB3 docking ports for drives, and... well, it's collecting dust on my desk as well, hah! But I can plop one of the old drives in there and use it if I want. I used to have OBS dump video capture directly onto a 1tb drive using that dock, and it was fine. Not sure if your cat would try to push it off the desk though. I have something like this : www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Docking-Station-Support/dp/B0099TX7O4Another thing to think about, since you have 2 drives is to get yourself an ODROID-HC2, and put one of the drives in there. You can tuck it away somwhere a little more cat-proof and it'll be your movie-NAS so you can stream from anywhere at home. www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-hc2-home-cloud-two/ (you can also get them on amazon, but then you'll have to find a power brick for it). It's basically a little ARM-based computer with a microSD slot, ethernet, power and a SATA connector for a drive. Copy the software image for Open Media Vault onto the SD card, connect the drive, power, and boot it up, and you have a tiny little NAS that you can stream 2TB worth of movies from. I can stream to my phone, which is great if I'm in the kitchen, or to the Fire Stick, if I'm at the TV.

I currently use an NVMe M.2 SSD as my C drive and I've also got an older SSD but I still use an old HDD for storage mainly moving my dormant Steam games to create room for new releases and other stuff that rarely gets used. I regularly move games back and forth. Personally I don't like to waste things and like to put things to good use but it's really up to you.

The Bunny Chaser I personally prefer hard drives that spin to SSD drives -too many power outages in this area and the SSD kept getting wiped out. If I was not tech-savy -I would say the SSD died of power failure fatigue -though it is more likely power surges. For me SSD's are simply not cost effectively worth it for my situation here on the side of a mountain...
Though if I could get NVMe drives that were 4TB and I could lower the operating temperature to below 60C* and below $100 per drive... Then maybe I would use them.

\What type of WD external drives?
Because more times than not you can shuck the drive from its enclosure and use as a standard drive:
Also for the drive cage issue:

Hope this helps.

Since you have two identical drives, maybe buy something like this: My Cloud Expert Series EX2 Ultraand use it as a secure network storage using RAID1 mirroring.

Morning, all.....thank you to everyone for your replies. I will review each of your replies more closely later this afternoon and take everything under close advisement. PS: Thanks for the hot tip Rewind....and while I like the idea of the NAS enclosure, 325.99 on Amazon.ca is too rich for my blood....scratch that-- I just found an 'unpopulated' enclosure which is what I would need. I guess the more ritzy ones had drives pre-installed at various capacities. I will think on that for sure because as of this moment, I still can not find a replacement HDD cage from CoolerMaster that would fit my H500M mid tower.... so, this might just be a good alternative. Expensive, but maybe worth it in the long run, yes? Thanks for the info

I haven't yet....But I agree, duct tape could work very well. Duct Tape is like The Force....It has a Light side, a Dark side and it binds things together.

That is no longer technology, it is art. And very fine art if I may say so.
In a build like that you would definitely need a solid backplate and screw it in to the studs or use nylon plugs in a concrete wall.
Unfortunately my builds have never been very artistic; more like cool and efficient. [checks temp, yep, CPU 40C/104F and SATA 17C/63F atm]

Unfortunately my builds have never been very artistic; more like cool and efficient. [checks temp, yep, CPU 40C/104F and SATA 17C/63F atm] Yes.
Tech Art. Are those the temps under load or at idle? Air or Liquid?

It was idling; the usual culprits, Firefox and music player were running. I've only ever built air cooled systems, but I have been eyeing water cooling recently, mainly because cooling towers have become so massive they hardly fit the case anymore.

I thought about water cooling and then the number of P.o.F.s of air cooling came back to my brain. How could I have been that stupid. How about GPU what is its idle temps?
I am trying to get Afterburner to run to get my readings but it keeps saying corruption guess going to have to reinstall it.

You mean of water cooling? Because air cooling is very safe atm.
GPU is running stable 40C/104F.
Afterburner has some issues with Win10, especially if you are behind a proper firewall and it can't find the update server. If I remember correctly, the solution was to use the latest version of Afterburner.

No I meant that there are less points of failure in air cooling versus water. Strange I am using the most current version and it often gives the same issue... Maybe because I used the default administrator account that most make their names on...
Probably should have actually started using Windows 10 hidden Admin account as primary account in the first place. Though using it does raise hackers awareness level of your system....
Guess it must be this mountain air and the cooler temperatures outside: On Idle:
CPU: 25C GPU: 28C
On Heavy Load: CPU: 45C -never goes above this no matter how much I push.

You are running cool my friend, very nice. And yes, I've been changing the stock fans way before it was cool (pun intended). But I usually wait until it's out of warranty.

Yes that is what I was saying. Take ownership.reg and Grant Admin Full Control.reg files do better overwriting than the hidden account anyway.
My system actually sits on its side so the Noctua D14 doesn't break from the motherboard.
Yes I like multitude of fans as well currently got 13 going in system: 3 on the side, 1 in the front, 2 exhaust in back, 3 on heat sink, 2 on graphics card 1 pulling up and away from graphics card.

Because there are several reviews that mention "you must buy a proper NAS Drive, such as the Red or Purple drives......Failure rate of non-NAS drives is quite high" So maybe just a typical aluminum external drive case from NEXSTAR would be better, no? EDIT: As of 1:45, I found a non-NAS 4-Disk Drive Bay Enclosure made by Orico. My dad has some single drive enclosures from Orico that he really likes, so he recommended it to me. I have 2 WD Blue HDDs, one with digitized movies on it, the other is blank....so I was originally going to only buy a two-drive bay.....But then in one of my own external enclosures that i haven't used in years because I lost the cables for them and they were only USB 2.0/Sata I and Sata II connections......And one of the cases had a 1.0 TB WD Caviar Green HDD that was formatted and perfectly useable in good condition, so when I found that as well....I decided on this really nice looking 4-Disk enclosure. Free Shipping with zero taxes, plus a 25.00 dollars in discounts, I got it all for only 190.00 CAD. It will be arriving on Thursday.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The older magnetic drives get even if they are unused, the greater the risk of eventual failure and data loss. But I just checked allt he HDDs I now have-- checked the most recently found Green drive yesterday as soon as I discovered it, and I've checked the two blue drives within the last week and they still are in perfect condition. I was going to use single drivebay cases for each of the two blue drives-- but I don't have a lot of real estate to have lots of junk on my table so I couldn't afford to have four single drive enclosures spread out on my table, so I thought one large enclosure that would support all three of them together to minimize space would be best. One blue drive has digitized movies on it and so I want to use it as my movie library of course, for when I plan to be in my room for a while and want to watch a movie. The other blue drive and the green drive are blank. I am going to use the green drive as an additional back-up to my 2.5" MX500 Crucial SSD....and the second blue drive-- I dont know yet. Probably another back-up of the back-up so I can dump all the junk from the dozens of USBs that I have. And if the drives eventually fail, well, it's no big loss. I have blu-rays of the movies on the first WD Blue and I have a Disney+ account, so I won't lose any sleep over that one if it fails. As for the other blue/green drive that are file/info/exe back-ups....I have plenty of other copies of those as well. And honestly, the drives are already five to twelve years old so if they die eventually, I won't complain. 'Preciate your advice though
