I hadn't realised we were being named after American astronauts, but in that case it seems only fair that we go for a Russian cosmonaut next.
Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin - First human in space
Gherman Stepanovich Titov - the second human to orbit earth
Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova - first and youngest woman to have flown in space.

Gagarin already got referenced via Gagarin Station (Jump Zero). I think Tereshkov/Tereshkova (Russian surnames are gendered) would be good, but I imagine the audience is too western centric for that to happen.

Maybe abbreviate it to Terr/Terra, Tess/Tessa, etc. if that is a problem. They could also always use her first name as basis for the last name, maybe westernize it to be Valentine or something.

Frimout. It's time the first Belgian in space got honored in a video game. Why not have a list of all sorts of names from astronauts all over the world?
The 'firsts' are less than 130, so a bit more manageable.
Something to look at and remove duplicates... thank you for the link.

Personally, this isn’t something I’m used to, since at work we’ve always been on a first name basis. But among the roster in these games, the same is true there as well. Everyone’s just Mordin, or Miranda, or Samara, or Garrus, etc., until they talk to the Commander. Then there’s dialogue when fraternizing. No one’s gonna say your last name during sexytimes unless they want to be kink formal or something. It's normal in militaries to refer to people by their surnames, with rank thrown in if addressing them more formally. Most units I've been in, I knew very few first names, and never used them on duty anyway. "Shepard" or Commander made enough sense from that perspective in the MET, as did referring to say Hackett and Anderson by Rank and Name instead of Steven and David With companion characters, though, this convention was rarely if ever observed. You'd hear the occasional "Williams" or "T'Soni" but most times it was given names. Made sense for those with unorthodox naming conventions (e.g krogan) but otherwise I would've liked the option to see it used more (in hindsight, maybe integrated with the more professional vs casual dialogue options you see in MEA). It's amusing to renegade shout at characters to salute you and observe proper military etiquette/bearing like a hardass drill instructor, then casually call them by their first name in the next sentence. Andromeda it also made no sense as a convention, given that you weren't in a military, and that there were 3 seperate Ryders in the leadership structure made it even more confusing.

From the names I have encountered in the past most Russian names be it: first, middle or last -can all work well as a surname. Valentina to Valentine if feminine or Valentino if masculine? Also a side note -i think it sheer speculation... but maybe some basis we may have found -take note to the end:
In relation to Terra,Terr, Tess,Tessa... In Latin Terr/Terra means Earth or land while... In Latin Tess/Tessa means essence... THOUGH IN GREEK Tessa means 4th-born and Reaper

Yeah.
There are a lot of them. Though I do find it good that the list does recognize those who have died... Maybe the next name should be from one of these fallen heros:
Space Shuttle: Challenger Crew -RIP Jan 1986:
Francis Richard Scobee Michael John. Smith Ellison Shoji Onizuka Judith Arlene Resnik Ronald Erwin McNair Sharon Christa McAuliffe
Gregory Bruce Jarvis Space Shuttle: Columbia -RIP Feb 2003: Rick Douglas Husband
William Cameron "Willie" McCool
Michael Phillip Anderson
Kalpana Chawla David McDowell Brown Laurel Blair Clark
Ilan Ramon
Apollo 1 Command Module Pre-Flight Test FIRE! -RIP January 27 1967: Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom Edward Higgins White II Roger Bruce Chaffee
Soyuz 1 -RIP -April 24 1967 Vladimir Mikhaylovich Komarov Soyuz 11 -RIP -June 29 1971
Georgy Timofeyevich Dobrovolsky Vladislav Nikolayevich Volkov Viktor Ivanovich Patsayev Oye... just so many choices...

Gagarin.
But it’s never gonna happen.
Western game by a Western studio.
Sure there’s a system named after him and Jump Zero but those are mere passing references.

Seems you have to do something that gets seen on TV to get name support... Though going by that we could end up with Reagan or Nixon -something I hope not for.

Bush maybe? But if anything, use the names of SciFi authors like the logic behind Isaac Clarke’s name.

what is the main hook for this character to why we should like them. He/she puts humanity first. Cerberus #1. Have no problem telling a voice to shut up. Have enough common sense to scan a robot before having it back on the ship. Getting rid of squadmates who do stupid crap. Asking questions.

I'd be up for a Russian surname next time. They were first, after all. Korolev? That'd be cool. Many astronaut/cosmonaut/othernaut names were used for stars in the trilogy weren't they?

This is why I'm saying a new protagonist won't work any better than Ryder and we can argue how well even Ryder can work, if at all.

A name influenced by great explorers of old could also be cool. Odysseus, Aeneas - hell, you could take something from Leif Eriksson - the viking explorer that found the Americas.

Though the person deserves credit where due. To have that name would make the character a Meme if the game fails horribly... A meme that even I could never forget.

My guess is it’ll be something basic, but likely explorer-themed with no more than 2 syllables. I’m sure they’ll be looking at the surnames of various astronauts over the years, and likely will be focusing primarily on those in the US.
