My guess is it’ll be something basic, but likely explorer-themed with no more than 2 syllables. I’m sure they’ll be looking at the surnames of various astronauts over the years, and likely will be focusing primarily on those in the US. Basic does usually beat complexity.

What’s important is that it sounds good in dialogue, especially since we’ll be hearing it a lot.

A Challenge for you: Develop Sagan into a potential ME:A 2 character and make him or her different from Ryder twins and Shepard and what is the main hook for this character to why we should like them. This is why I'm saying a new protagonist won't work any better than Ryder and we can argue how well even Ryder can work, if at all. Well it is about the hook and good writing will be important.

Play as Captain Hook and Ryder can be promoted from being a little duck to being a pan calling itself Peter.

Commander Wright. Named after the Wright Brothers That actually reminds me of this scenario:
Example of how it would start:
Commander Wright:
I am Wright. Subordinate:
Right? Commander Wright: Yes. Subordinate:
So... the captain is wrong? Commander Wright:
No he is Captain Whong. Anyone can take it from there.
This is perfect, but only if his first name is either Victor, Clarence or Roger.
As for names: I am ruling out any real celebrities like Gagarin and Armstrong. I think they want a less familiar name so the protagonist is not directly linked to a specific real life person immediately.
A typical simple American sounding last name that would work would be White, after Ed White, first American to do a space walk. Leonov would be cool, as Alexei Leonov was the first man to walk in space but I doubt they'll go with a Russian name.
John Glenn has already been mentioned as a namesake and would be cool, first American to complete a full earth orbit and an astronaut legend, to date the oldest man to ever have been in space (at a whooping 77 years). How about one of the Apollo 8 crew? They were the first to ever leave low earth orbit and achieve a flight to an extraterrestrial stellar object (aka the moon). That would be Boman, Anders and Lovell (though Lovell is probably more famous for having commanded the infamous Apollo 13 mission).
Personally, I was thinking the first commander of the ISS would be nice but that was William Shepherd, too close to Shepard, I guess.
Disclaimer: Haven't read the entire thread, so sorry if these are all old ideas.

A benefit of White as it is also a thing(color)its a name that translates across languages fairly well. White will have meaning in any language even though it will never be translated to a local version. Throw some long ass polish name in there and people will be like WTF is a Hermaszewski.
And it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. You probably want a name from a culture that produces one or two syllable words as well.

Wilco also works in that situation. Could also have William as the Surname like: David Williams... Ugh Ashley descendant.
And yes most have been already been mentioned though the Apollo 8 -not so much. Apollo 13 isn't Infamous to me. It is famous to me for the fact that they had a problem and Lovell was fast witted enough to stop it from becoming deadly.
For some reason color names remind me of that crime movie that had Mr. White, Mr. Blue ect. Can't remember it for the life of me... Found it!
Reservoir Dogs... Ironically it also had a video game interpretation.

It will be Pathfinder Ryder.
Yeah, we are not done with Ryder's story and they will continue to be the protagonist for the next game. Probably just a lot more mature.
