In War, Victory. In Peace, Vigilance. In Death, Sacrifice. - The Motto of the Grey Wardens A photo of a young Griffon Child and it's moody Serpent Father - taken circa around the time of the First Blight. You knew this thread was coming eventually, so let's discuss The Grey Wardens in Tevinter - which despite being the EVIL EMPIRE of the series, is the ancestral homeland of the Grey Wardens, the saviours to all of Thedas. So grasp at elven straws and speculate to all your hearts content! We'll start with what we know from the way Inquisition ended, that Weisshaupt suddenly ceases to communicate with the outside world, while a civil war is beginning to loom from within it. if the Inquisitor banishes the Grey Wardens: The surviving Grey Wardens of Adamant return to Weisshaupt, and it is believed that a battle for control of the Order erupts soon after. If the Warden ally survived the events of Adamant, it's rumored he is leading a rebellion to change the Order from within. Eventually, even the Grey Wardens from the northern nations begin to retreat to Weisshaupt and rumors that the Order is on the verge of vanishing begin to spread, while all news from Weisshaupt cease.
If the Inquisitor allied with the Grey Wardens: The southern Grey Wardens begin to slowly rebuild after helping the Inquisition stop a particularly dangerous darkspawn incursion, and declare that the Order must change, becoming more open to the general populace. It's rumored that the southern Grey Wardens sever ties with their leaders at Weisshaupt and that both Warden factions are at war. Eventually, all news from Weisshaupt cease. Since then, news from Bioware about the Grey Wardens and DA4 has been scarce too. Several new Wardens were featured in two short stories from Tevinter Nights, a Dragon Age anthology published last year. These were The Horror of Hormak and Hunger respectively. (Summary Below) The Horror of Hormak Investigating the disappearance of Warden Jovis mining expedition leads Wardens Ramesh and Lesha to discover ancient elven ruins in the Deep Roads, where a massive pool of viscous gray liquid causes darkspawn to mutate in disturbing ways. Jovis himself has turned into a centipede hybrid after drinking the liquid. He retains enough of his consciousness to tell them to destroy the pool, to prevent "her" from having it again. Lesha sacrifices herself to collapse the ruins and give Ramesh the chance to warn the other Wardens, as this place was only one of twelve depicted in the ruins.
Hunger While answering Weisshaupt's summons for all available Wardens, Evka Ivo and Antoine help resolve the village of Eichweill's supposed curse. Elsewhere from one video Bioware published on the development of DA4, there's at least one Grey Warden named - Davrin, voiced by Nigerian-American VA Ike Amadi There's a character on the left of the party lineup concept art that looks suspiciously like Ike Amadi (rogue?), could that be him? I'm gonna update this thread later on tomorrow with more stuff, my back's hurtin' from the terrible computer chair I'm using right now.

I thought their ancestoral home land was the Anderfels?
I mean I can imagine they aren't exactly popular in the Imperium. Probably more of a prescence then Ferelden...or Orlais right now for that matter...but I just can't imagine them having too large a prescence right now, like honestly a lot of Thedas.

Well yeah it was Anderfels, but that was apart of Tevinter for a long ass time. And of course the first Grey Wardens were Tevinters themselves

I imagine that the civil war building up between the southern Wardens and their northern counterparts has escalated into a full blown civil war. Also the First Warden has been criticising the King of the Anderfels and might be conspiring a coup.

DA4 protagonist: *sighs taking out a notebook* alright, who are we helping on a throne this time? Any other crisis I need to be aware of? Warden: *sipping tea* nah...just put on the throne who you like the best, or the person that pays you the most, as for crisis...it'll come to you Hawke: *slumps at table* don't remind me...qunari crisis, mage/templar crisis...another crisis...so much crisis *Warden pats their shoulder as they start mumbling to themselves* Inquisitor: *fiddling with their crossbow arm* well let's see...possible civil war in the Anderfells, unrest with the Wardens, Nevara, Qunari invading the Tevinter Imperium. And to top it all of...my former companion hellbent on destroying the world, *looks at DA4* you got your work cut out for you buddy DA4 protagonist: ...thanks? I guess...
And with that out of the way...I'm curious if we'll find out if the Warden (if using an import where they're alive) was successful in their mission to cure the Calling. If so...that's cause enough for unrest among the Wardens I'd say. Also, I'd love to find out more about the previous heroes. So far we only have some tidbits here and there, some names...but not much else. Also...griffons even if we can't fly on them I wanna see them so badly!

I said this in the other thread earlier Well your probably going to see more Tevinter Wardens IN Tevinter, just like there are lots of Orlesian ones in orlais. But, since Tevinter has been in basically a constant state of war with the qunari to one degree or another (usually over seheron) for quite some time I suspect fighters from there might not join the wardens very much, them having more urgent things to do. And of course their poor/slaves aren't free to leave. And the wardens have to use the right of conscription carefully or risk pissing nations/groups off, their probably wary of using it to take soldiers away from a nation at war. I wouldn't actually be surprised if we saw more Anders and Nevarran Wardens instead. But since then it occurred to me that since a "summons called available wardens to Weisshaupt Fortress", even when they are as far away as Orlais as we saw with Evka Ivo, we might not see many because of that. Wardens stationed in Tevinter have a lot less distance to travel then most.

Well we know from recent trailers and concept art that the Wardens are definitely going to be involved in DA4, which is a good thing. We may also be getting a genuine Warden companion in either Davrin (based off the VA) or Evka (based off her involvement in two different stories).
However, I have to say that the plotlines for the Wardens are all over the place and there seems no consistency whatsoever with what we were told at the end of DAI. Even the Warden plot within DAI didn't chime with what occurred in DAA. So we have been told variously:
(DAA) Warden HQ definitely wanted to raise their profile in the south and get more involved with secular affairs. To that end they had an agreement with the monarch of Ferelden after the Blight that the Wardens would occupy Vigil's Keep and be responsible for the welfare and governance of the surrounding area. It meant a great deal to the First Warden that this venture should be a success. They had lines of communication open and would no doubt want to receive regular reports. Essentially if you had a problem with darkspawn or anything Warden related Vigil's Keep would be your first port of call.
(DAI) Leliana thought something was up with the Wardens in Ferelden, so she suggested that the Inquisitor should search out a Warden recruiter named Blackwall to find some answers. Then for some inexplicable reason Hawke also seemed to be involved with the Wardens problems and was helping the only true Warden who was questioning why they were all hearing the Calling at the same time. A codex suggested that Warden Clarel, who was in charge in Orlais, was seeking permission to enter Ferelden from Arl Teagan. The Wardens in Ferelden were taking their orders from her. All this totally ignored the events of DAA. They could at least have Leliana saying that she had approached the Wardens at Vigil's Keep and found them absent or something similar with no other clues as to why. Although that would be odd in itself because it is clear in DAA that we have non Wardens working for our organisation who wouldn't suddenly start running around like headless chickens over hearing the Calling. The Wardens all then depart for Adamant where they are continuing to work on their ridiculous demon army idea. Finally, the Inquisitor defeats Erimond and the Wardens start seeing sense again. Whoever survives the Fade as Warden contact heads off the Weisshaupt to report the matter. In the epilogue, if we banish them (for their own safety in my case) then the entire south turns against the Wardens, whilst there is said to be a rebellion at Warden HQ and all news from there ceases. Or if we recruit them into the Inquisition then these Wardens simply break with HQ and all news from there ceases. This would be circa 9:42.
(Trespasser) We can ask Varric at the beginning of the Exalted Council what became of Hawke. He seems to have heard via his network rather than Hawke direct that Weisshaupt is a mess. That is consistent enough. Then he says he doesn't know how it will play out but he jokes it will likely involve the fortress exploding as Hawke walks away and that's it. That would seem a suitable set up for the next game. Except in the epilogue to Trespasser Hawke is back in Kirkwall with no further explanation as to what is going on in Weisshaupt. I suppose that could be a set up for the next game that would explain why Hawke wasn't there when we arrive. However, this is 9:44. So what was Hawke doing up there for 2 years before the Exalted Council? If Hawke simply left because it was Warden business and they were no longer welcome, why didn't Varric say that at the beginning of Trespasser?
(Last Flight) This takes place for the modern part of the story in the time period from when the mage/Templar war started in 9:40 through until 9:42, so the same period as covered by the events in Inquisition. According to this version of Warden history, Weisshaupt seems to be operating normally, with the leadership concerned about references to blood magic use in their histories. Southern outposts are reporting as normal, including Ferelden, with only Clarel failing to make contact. However, we know from WoT that this can happen from time to time and the leadership do only seem mildly concerned not to have heard from her. Apparently the news that there is trouble in the south caused by an ancient darkspawn Magister recently released from one of their prisons has completely passed them by. Even if the First Warden was keeping quiet about it, according to our War Table missions the events concerning Corypheus are widely known, so you would think it would reach the ears of the rank and file in Weisshaupt without the First Warden needing to tell them. Don't tradespeople gossip when bringing in supplies? Wouldn't missives be pouring into HQ from across the southern states asking what they are going to do abut Corypheus? Not to mention, where is the Warden contact who went north after Adamant? They should have arrived during the time period covered by the novel.
Tevinter Nights/the Next One: The Wardens still seem to be operating normally in Orlais and Nevarra, with no mention of any dissatisfaction with the leadership. The lines of communication are open because Evka and Antoine, who must surely have been recruited after the events of DAI, have been recalled to Weisshaupt. There is absolutely no mention in any of the Warden stories that there has been a break with HQ or the southern Wardens are in rebellion with the leadership.
However, the Behind the Scenes trailer did mention how our next group of heroes will be coping with issues that leaders are ignoring. So I suppose this could be how they manage to bring the Warden plot back into alignment with the end of DAI. Even without Solas, a new threat in the Deep Roads has been identified. If the First Warden is not prepared to commit resources to investigating how serious this threat might be, then that could be the cue for one of the Wardens to seek help elsewhere. That could be where we come in.
I've no doubt we will be travelling to Weisshaupt from the screen shots we have been shown. Further researching the creatures and the means of creating them that were introduced in Horror of Hormack is likely to be what involves us with them. That seems good to me. Not sure if they will pursue the gryphon plot from Last Flight. I'm not sure how fast they grow but it seems unlikely they will be big enough for us to have gryphon mounts. However, it is possible that we will need to rescue them and take them to safety, so will see them if nothing else.

I'm not super interested in a GW companion - unless they're some upper echelon person like the First Warden, that could be an interesting change. But after a fake Grey Warden companion, and Alistair and Anders being Grey Wardens, and Carver/Bethany potentially being a Grey Warden, and playing up to two (HoF and Orlesian GW) in the original game..... I'm a bit Wardened out as far as companions go.

If we're getting a Warden companion...I'm hoping for a female of any race all the others we've had so far have been human males, having a lady take on this role would be interesting however, like vertigomez I only want them if they're interesting and not another rehash of the former ones

Excluding the HoF, I've noticed we haven't had a Grey Warden party member from one of the following: Qunari Male Qunari Female and a Male Elf Nor have we had a Female Spirit as one, God I'm tired and should just go to bed instead of endless speculating.

I'm a bit Wardened out as far as companions go. I agree and also not really interessed in another grey warden companion but if DA 4 has one because its mandatory for a DA game to have one lets go wild with him or her.
Here is my idea. No more a nice and sympathic companion like the previous ones no this person is a real asshole who will everything to end the war / blight. You can say a much more extreme version of Duncan. He / She doesn´t care if someone like him / her if you want to be his / her friend so be it but don´t stand in his / her way. So yes in a rival romance (if those are possible) he / she will kill the playercharacter after Sex.
Make no mistake this grey warden will be one of despised characters that Bioware will ever created but he / she will be true grey warden who isn´t a recruit, ex grey warden or a naive fake one. Also in my opinion he / she shouldn´t be Ferelden they also done it already. It would be nice if he / she came from Anderfels. So yes fans like Hanako Ikezawa will really hate him / her.

It would be nice if he / she came from Anderfels. I agree with this. It would be nice to have a genuinely Anderfels Warden. The natives of that country are meant to be super tough and we haven't encountered one up to now (Anders had been raised in Ferelden - it was his father who was an Ander and he had left his home country). The background is called Ander Survivor in the Core Rule Book and they do sound as though they would be pretty dour and determined with little room for sentiment. So it wouldn't just be the Warden attitude that shapes their outlook but the fact they are an Ander to boot. Of course that would make them human. Alternatively, a dwarf from Kal-Sharok (I really want a dwarf from there one way or another)

I liked the idea of a Qunari Warden who has to balance their devotion to the Qun with the service to the Order, until they have to make a decision, either follow the Qun or the Order, and you can influence their choice through dialogue\approval\etc. Though this sounds way too similar to the Iron Bull's Qun vs. Tal-Vashoth character arc, so... we've seen two dwarves become Wardens, and a Dalish elf... maybe a city elf? Or another Dalish one because Velanna didn't have enough time 'on screen'?
Most likely we'll see one native to the Anderfels, which would be interesting nonetheless since they have their own unique perspectives, what with the Grey Wardens being part of the local politics in the regions... maybe they could also be useful in sharing us some "ancient" Grey Warden lore, tell us who the first Wardens were, etc. (the games don't really tell much about ancient Wardens as one might think)
Also, if they're going to include Wardens in the game, PLEASE let them reference the Hero of Ferelden more. I know we will never see them in a game again (sadly), but hearing about him\her makes sense if we're going to get involved in Warden politics - we're talking about THE Warden, possibly the most important hero of the age, and certainly the most important Warden of the Age. Regardless if the HoF is dead or alive, we should see Wardens either admiring them as a symbol of what a Warden should be and act or using the HoF's prestige and reputation ("the man\woman who stopped the Blight in less than a year") for political gain. If the Warden's alive, I could also see some of the higher ups being suspicious of how they managed to survive the Archdemon. I'm not saying they should pop up in every conversation, but I've seen too many dialogue options about "what do you think of the Wardens?", "what should a Grey Warden be?", without a single reference to the one person who already set an example a decade or so back.

Well the Grey Wardens have been mentioned three times in regards to Ghilinain’s pools/magic. In HoH, in The Next One (the Grey warden’s blood was gray), and in Descent, when we find the warden’s journal detailing how she found pits of mutilated corpses. I think that is a sign that their order, and possibly the magic involved with it, may be connected with Ghilinain and her pools and we will follow that story through with The Wardens.
Honestly, I think the breach fucked EVERYTHING up. As the echo of the Titan was triggered by the breach in Descent, the pools were probably activated as well, as they also have giant lyrium shards hanging over them and we haven’t seen anything like that previous to the breach. That could also mean that whatever blight is coming next is going to be completely different from the rest - which we can pretty much guess from HoH. It’s also going to be the first blight with red lyrium spreading throughout the surface.
So DA4 will probably see a chance for The Wardens to gain some glory back, and that seems to be one of the upcoming themes: Will the wardens return to their former glory? Or Tevinter, or the elves? Will Antiva and The Crows survive the incoming Qunari threat? The Wardens will definitely have to come to terms with the real truth of their order, and whatever it is, Solas seems to think that they’re trapped and I think that goes beyond the knowledge we already know.

Solas seems to think that they’re trapped and I think that goes beyond the knowledge we already know. "The blight corrupts everything it touches. Those who believe themselves capable of using it safely are mad." I have a feeling that may go beyond merely the bodily corruption that comes from the Joining or the Calling in the mind in later life. I wouldn't mind meeting Caronel from Last Flight but I doubt he will be an actual companion since we already have a name for him, Davrin, unless we were only hearing the voice of a prominent NPC in that trailer. Nevertheless, if male, it is likely to be Davrin and if female, Evka, given her prominence in the latest stories. There has been a lot of artwork and other aspects featuring wardens, including shots of what can only be Weisshaupt Fortress so it seems pretty much a given that we are going to see a lot of them next game and likely intertwined with the Solas plot too. If you think about it, it would break from tradition not to have someone connected with the Wardens in some way among our companions. Alistair was a proper warden who idolized the Order; Anders was a proper warden who had gone AWOL; Tom Rainier had been recruited by the real Blackwall but just not had the chance to take the Joining before his recruiter was killed, so we just need a warden in DA4 with a different backstory and view of the Wardens than any of them.

As companion?!? Not gonna happen but a cameo why not? I would prefer Nathaniel over him but Oghren would also be fine i guess. I just hope that Bioware will explain where Oghren and Nathaniel have been since DAA (in Nathaniels case after DA 2 act 3) and why they won´t be even mentioned in DAI.

I always imagined the DAA companions (barring Anders and Justice) are with the Warden in their search for the cure. Vellana, Oghren, and Nathaniel all have reason to want it, and Sigrun tags along because get worse case she dies but she’s dead anyway.

Oghren and Nathaniel have good reasons to follow the Warden but in all the Velanna epilogue she left after some time.
Sigrun well to bad that she didn´t get a last heroic scene. By the way is there any reason why Bioware hasn´t used Natalia Cigliuti for another game after lending her voice to Sigrun and Morinth? Or this another Adam Baldwin (Kal´Reegar) situation?

Those epilogues also can state that Anders stayed with the Wardens for many years, yet he left within one. BioWare told us not to see the epilogue slides as canon but mere rumors. As for Natalia, I know that BioWare doesn’t like to use the same VA for multiple major roles in their series. Usually one protagonist/crew per. Though since those are her only two roles in games, maybe she didn’t like it and decided to stick to television.

I'd love for Loghain to be a party member, but since that obviously isn't going to happen I really wouldn't mind meeting Sigrun again. For some reason I've always felt that she was a really underrated part of Awakening. Only if Harding is a party member too, that'll be two dwarven rogues, and three games in a row where the dwarven companion is a rogue, so...
I also feel like Oghren should get more credit as a candidate. Out of all the companions, and all the people in Thedas for that matter, he is unique in potentially having traded blows with both an Archdemon and the Architect. In fact, besides the HoF and Loghain/Alistair he's the only Grey Warden in existence who fought against the Fifth Blight at all, something that isn't made nearly enough of in Origins and Awakening or with Blackwall's backstory.
An older and wiser Oghren who rose in the order based on those accomplishments and cleaned up his act a little would be a treat to behold.

I for one think the idea that Oghren coming back as one of the most important people in Thedas would be amusing. We've had Dwarves that won't stop coming back and Origins characters that keep coming back as more and more important roles. For a character that gets shoved to the side in most conversations as just "comic relief" he has fought in the 5th Blight, the battle against the Mother, possibly entered the fade as a dwarf twice, married the only living Paragon, and has personally insulted the possible Divine, possible King of Ferelden, daughter of an elven goddess, the assassin currently causing havock for the Antivan Crows and the Arishok. That's quite the resume.
Who else could we have call Solas a "knife-eared pipe-cleaner"?

Oghren is a quantum character so its very unlikely that he come back in a major role. And if Varric really back as companion again (lets hope not) there is no room for Oghren. Also i think he had his (screen) time in the series. I mean with the expection of the dog in Witch Hunt he was the only returning DAO companion.
But a small cameo at Weisshaupt why not?

Oghren is only as quantum as Anders was in Awakening. You could kill him in Origins and when you asked how he's alive in Awakening he points out he woke with his clothes gone and commends you on trying to kill him. So an epilogue slide (which we're told to take as rumors because so many were retconned) wouldn't be enough to put down the dwarf. That said I can totally understand why someone wouldn't want him back, but he could be back.
