It also allows for empires to set up actual choke points along the hyperspace lanes. In the earlier version of the game species with warp or wormhole drives could just bypass any heavily defended areas and just wreck havoc on the undefended sections of your empire. That was something that always annoyed me whenever watching other's campaigns. Even when players would run with hyperdrives, they'd never bother to take advantage of obvious choke points at their disposal for strategic purposes. As you said, it wouldn't keep out warp or wormhole users, but that was no reason to let other hyperspace-using empires continue to run amok in their territory! Maybe that's just me though, in any 4x game, I prefer to play defensively and guard my territory with extreme paranoia.

So, I just found a system named "Covfefe"... Yeah they added it almost immediately after the legendary tweet... Just as how they added the Trappist system after it was featured in the news. I like small nods to real world events like these. Anyway, I am really enjoying the patch so far. Especially the nerf on doomstacks is great. All in all, I feel as if I have to make more strategic decisions, which is nice. Trying to reach chokepoints, building and specialising starbases, utilising gateways and wormholes, positioning fleets, actual roles for combat computers etc. All make war feel much more interactive and alive.

So first time I encountered the Enigmatic Fortress, everything went off without a hitch, but now after the Apocalypse update it seems bugged for me. The event won't start, and the fortress resets almost immediately. I only get the initial pop-up of the quest, but nothing to follow, I don't get a marker to investigate with a science ship or anything else. From googling the issue it seems that this is possibly an old problem, but also bizarrely enough that the recent update may have introduced it for more people that initially didn't have that issue. Haven't run into any of the Leviathans/Boss systems yet in my games, so hopefully that particular bug can be squashed before too long. My current play though as a machine intelligence has hit a bit of a sang though. I suppose it's part of the update to 2.0, but apparently the game likes to surround my rogue servitor empire with militant spiritualists; every diplomatic encounter I'm getting now has that negative modifier for "soulless machines" attached to it. That, or the game will give me democratic crusaders as neighbors and I'll have the "oppressors" negative modifier with them. Stupid organics. My bio-trophies live a live of luxury and security far beyond whatever their 'gods' or 'democracies' can ever hope to provide.

Stupid organics. My bio-trophies live a live of luxury and security far beyond whatever their 'gods' or 'democracies' can ever hope to provide. Anyway, Iv'e been fairly lucky in my most recent playthrough, I found the Ether Drake, the stellarite devourer, and the Automated Dreadnaught not far from my borders, so I expanded a little bit. I killed the Drake, and got access to a planet with something like 30 energy and minerals (each IIRC), but for some reason didn't get research for Dragon armor (I thought this was a thing?). Also, killed the Dreadnaught, and managed to scrounge up enough resources to rebuild it, and so far having it lead my primary fleet is working out well. The Stellarite I haven't killed yet, But I will at some point later. My problem with the enigmatic fortress was that it was quite a way out of my borders, and with the changes to FTL it took me a lot of time to reach it. And now that bug is annoying the hell out of me. If I can't solve it somehow I'll just have to reload an earlier save. Wow, bravo on taking on all those Leviathans in a single game. I've never quite been that lucky Hopefully the problem with the fortress can be sorted out with a future patch before too long. As for the Ether Drake, your reward for killing it is randomized. You get the Dragon's Horde (mineral and energy system), the armor, a unique building, or an ether egg that you can hatch and domesticate.

To be fair, I've only managed to do that because I got lucky and also didn't get embroiled in too many wars, and I was looking for cool things to fight. I think I took on the automated Dreadnought with something like three fleets IIRC (it was relatively early in the game), and losses were fairly substantial, but still, now I have an awesome ship. (I wonder if the Dread is the equivalent of a titan in power? probably not.) Good question. I would lean towards the “probably not” side of the equation considering how early you can get it.

NECROMANCY!!! So the Console Edition comes out tomorrow. I am super stoked. The weekly dev streams have been fun to watch over the last little while. They’re (Paradox) doing a launch day stream tomorrow at IIRC 5pm local time (Stockholm, Sweden) to celebrate the console version going live. Anybody else interested in purchasing this for X1 or PS4? Note that it’s apparently cheaper on X1 last I checked.

I kept waiting for patch and got distracted by gettong Civ6 too. So far I think is good game. Some performance issues on large maps. What I like best is how you design your race and ethics before starting a bit like a character in a rpg. They should take that aspect even further for different gameplay experiences. Most games like this went with prefab "civs" but having good customisation options give a sandbox to play around with. Pretty good soundtrack, too. Synthetic God is very nice piece if you get the synth thingo dlc. I guess you peasants will have the whole range? P-dox kinda exagerates withtheir output and cash grabbing but I said fuck it this time and pigged out on it during sale. I'm such scifi nerd.

Console will have Build 1.7 at launch and currently the only known add-ons are Plantoids, Leviathans, and Utopia. So we’ll be a little behind at the beginning. I bought the Deluxe version so it comes with all three add-ons once they’re available. I’m looking forward to the species customization! It’s easily the biggest draw for me right now. I could easily spend hours making even one empire before starting a game.

Too bad the console version doesn't have mod support. There are some player creations out there that make the game play totally different and that's not even counting the Star Trek: New Horizons total conversion mod Anyways does the console version support extensive multiplayer? I know on PC you can have up to 30 player empires battling it out for control of the galaxy.

It’s been said several times on the dev stream they intend to add it after launch, just no time frame.

Still, the game itself is pretty awesome and I'm glad console players will be able to enjoy it now.

Anybody else interested in purchasing this for X1 or PS4? Note that it’s apparently cheaper on X1 last I checked. I might check it out on PS4 if it's coming bundled with a few of the expansions.
Since you've probably played it by now, how does it run on console?

So far so good but I only played for maybe an in-game century. You get a “lag” spike whenever it autosaves but only for a half second. Seriously it runs great. I’ll link my three-and-a-half hour stream here once it’s public on YouTube.

So I’m curious if anybody has any input on ship designs? I’m reading in a couple different spots across the interverse that unedited red laser corvette spam is actually the most “optimal” thing to do in this version of the game. I personally really like designing my own ships for different purposes - anti-missile destroyer, strike craft cruiser, etcetera... just want an idea if I should bother with that at all or if this surprisingly fun aspect of the game is a waste of my time.

It's been a while, but I recall ship designs had a dramatic effect in one of the Crisis scenarios. I kept losing in spite of superior total strength until I replayed that part of the game with different ship designs. IIRC different civilizations have different preferences, and shipbuilding takes quite a while so it may not be all that relevant depending on which civilizations you meet and how many of them there are, but ship design is not irrelevant. In the early game I was highly successful with missile corvettes, but again, but that was some time ago - balance might've changed - and I tend to play in galaxies with a low civilization density, so my early game is usually more against random events and space monsters.

Is hard to tell. I looked a one of your recording and the version looks different. I dont know how the mechanics compare. Right now on PC you are better off changing to higher HP ships soon. Maybe go destroyer or even skip those entirely. Small ships get easily destroyed - you pay more alloy to rebuild them. Evasion doesnt keep them alive. Early tier missiles are often useless. There should be AAR showcasing your system and weapon efficiencies vs enemies. Right now Battleship artillery complemented by cruiser / DD fast tracking weapons is king. Even artillery which cant track well will brute force thru against evasive corvettes. Add in a few AA hardpoints and you're good. And lol- trying to find button to switch to galmap: 1st roadblock here too.

And yes console is currently using an earlier version, Aziz/Dale at Paradox said during live streams that it’s the 1.7 version. We don’t have megastructures yet but Utopia is planned to be one of the earlier DLCs. My one game that I’m not streaming/recording, I’m up to Battleships now. I made three variants. One is a command carrier with the maximum (three) strike craft hangars, short range lasers and point defenses, and a single long range weapon which I believe I kept a missile but may have changed to a big laser. The second is basically a big gunship sporting the maximum weapon slots available and they’re all blue lasers with a couple disruptors for ripping shields. The last is a long range missile boat with five or six large missile launchers so it can hang back out of most weapon ranges and attack from afar. I don’t have variants of the other ships any more. My corvettes just sport triple lasers. I changed my destroyers for a mostly defensive purpose with point defense, small lasers, and a single long range missile launcher. And my cruisers have almost entirely torpedoes and disruptors, maybe a medium laser in there somewhere too. Just trying to keep a mix of weapons and ships in the fleet. The battleships will be the bulk of my offensive power while the other ships are for more specialized purposes. What can I say, shipbuilding is fun!
