I will be 49 this summer, and I grew up in a very "progressive" college town where multiculturalism was actually a significant part of our education. Of course, it was limited to the local natives that had been marginalized, but I learned to make a hopi blanket which was neat. In the 90s my mother was actually teaching multiculturalism in English class, so there was an evolution. It died, like most good education initiatives. I see your point about inclusion and accented/unaccented and why it is better to have both. Thanks for the perspective! Thank you for being open to different perspectives!
That's cool that you learned a traditional art form. When I was little I wished I were Native American instead of Japanese American because Native Americans had cool adventure books written about them (like Island of the Blue Dolphins, even though it was written by a white dude) whereas all we had was Farewell to Manzanar, which I thought was boring and depressing.
I'm a few years older than you. I grew up in a college town in California that turned into a wealthy right-leaning suburb after my parents moved us there. I was surrounded by people who looked down on those who weren't white and rich. Not everyone was like that, of course, but the divides of race and class were present all the time. For example, middle-class white kids I had been friends with since kindergarten stopped talking to me in middle school because I had a black friend from the "wrong" part of town, and that association hurt their chances of being friends with the rich white kids. Multiculturalism was not really celebrated and it was common to hear that Asians and Mexicans should be deported, and that school busing -- which brought (mostly black and latinx) kids from the poorer part of the city -- was bringing crime and lowering property values. So, I'm glad you weren't exposed to that in your youth, but there's no way I'm nostalgic for the 80's, even if I'm more at risk of getting shoved in the street these days.
It's funny how class can work differently in different places. I grew up in a mostly upscale suburb which was left-leaning, at least on cultural issues. But not for good reasons. Anyone talking that crap about Mexicans, etc. would have been looked down on for acting lower-class. This sort of behavior was the sort of thing those people did, and you didn't want to be like them, did you?

But we got so very little of it, and it mostly existed just to demean. People treat each other differently. A good way to show it is that weirdo turian shopkeeper in ME2. If you saved the Council, he's a supergeek. If you didn't, he's a jackass. More like that. Oh, I'm totally on board with getting different reactions. I just I don't want them to be based solely on the gender of the PC. Have someone insult my class (if that's still a thing after Andromeda), or my armor, or my hair color, or my choices. Or have a Turian shopkeeper give me a discount if a Turian squadmate is accompanying me.
Or have class specific cheesy pickup lines from PCs at the bar that are delivered regardless of PC gender:
Are you a Sentinel? Cause you've overloaded my heart! or A Sentinel? No thanks, you guys are Warped.
Are you an Engineer? Because your decoy looks just like you, and he's STUNNING! or No, thanks, you engineers just Drone on and on!
Are you an Infiltrator? You can recon mine... and I'll recon yours. or Ugh, If there's one thing I've learned, it's that you Infiltrators NEVER choose increased duration.
Are you an Adept? I'd love for you to throw me around! or An Adept? No thanks, I don't need blue balls.
Are you a Soldier? Cause your ammo's pierced my armored heart. or A Soldier? You've taken one too many concussive rounds to the head if you think I'm interested.
Are you a vanguard? You can charge on up to my place any time. or A Vanguard? You've charged too many walls if you think I'm into you.
I bet you're a Paragon in the streets and Renegade in the sheets. You go neutral? Don't worry, honey, I'll give you a reputation!
These are terrible. I absolutely love them. Your ideas are fine too: I wouldn't mind if that happened. I'm just tired of cookie cutter.

Who are "they"? I don't think anyone in this thread is outraged. Which is actually quite a feat around here, so nice going! How DARE you? Better? Oh, yes, thanks! I was getting worried.

This sort of behavior was the sort of thing those people did, and you didn't want to be like them, did you? I grew up in a lower middleclass Mexican neighborhood in the Phoenix area. As the lone "white boy" I had to regularly defend myself for no better reason than the color of my skin. Now in my middle years and having reached a fair degree of success I "deal" with assumptions about my "white privilege" having made it a cakewalk. My point being is stereotyping, personal biasing, bigotry, and racism are by no means limited to any particular race. Throughout my career I have interacted with pretty much every ethnicity, religious background, and sexual orientation from across the globe. What I've learned is people are people...good, bad, and everything in between.

Personally, I don’t really care all that much about stereotypes. If the game wants to have some hispanic guy jacking sky cars, whatever. If he’s a character that somehow adds to the game by being amusing and believable, I’ll take it lol. I just want these characters to feel fleshed out and have engaging dialogue. If they can at least get that far, then I guess I can turn my attention to the smaller details. I strongly agree here. But I'm personally more bothered by Bioware's need to insert what could be called 'token characters'. Krem in DAI was treated as a 'token character'. He was just there so EA/Bioware could say how progressive they are. That to me is far worse than what many believe to be a Stereotype character. Give me good dialogue and character progression and I'm a happy player. PS:I hope this makes sense. If not I apologise. I've had a couple of Rums. I'm not quite sure how Krem was a "token, just there so EA/Bioware could say how progressive they are." He serves a pretty major function in further definition of world lore, particularly qunari culture. And I realize that some would argue it was an outright retcon, but others find it more of a clarification since people tend to make assumptions and fill in any blank spaces where the writers omit context. My point is not to start a discussion about DA lore, but to point out that his presence has a lot more impact than you're crediting here. He exemplifies showing - rather than telling - the audience about trans people in Thedas.

I didn't love Harkin's sexual harassment in ME1 or the Batarian recuiter's: "Well, aren't you sweet? You're in the wrong place, honey; strippers quarters are that way" during Archangel's recruitment mission. However "Shepard is my Battlemaster; she has no equal" was pretty awesome. Can you give examples of the types of dialogue you would like?
Anything. Flirtation. Dismissiveness. I don't care who the target is, as long as I can feel however I want. Let's say you enter an dancing bar looking to sneak in. The jackass at the door tells a woman she should shake her ass on the stage, and tells a man he should drop 2000 credits for the hope he might be touched briefly. Then let me shoot the asshole in the head. What if those reactions were swapped? Or perhaps randomized? It's pretty clear the asari were initially designed to serve as dancers/consorts to the galaxy, but that kind of changed over time. Especially in MEA, where the bar that features dancers has dancers of different species and genders. I could also point out that people who have to suffer harassment IRL might want some escapism, too...

Well as a female I've felt fairly represented in games. I will say if we get a female character that's badass for the sake of being badass I will be majorly annoyed. There's a reason why I disliked captain marvel but loved the female representation in the madolorian. I shouldn't be told a character is awesome AND apart of "this group." I should see a character first and acknowledge by myself that they are apart of that group and awesome. I feel like most people regardless of their life and views would agree.
That said I would love to reverse the retcon to asari gender that ME:A made. They are unisex so I find it difficult to believe they would also form norms based off of, traditionally, gender binary in relation to sex. It felt really shoe horned to add it in like that but maybe someone who came into the series with ME:A would disagree on that point.

No context of any sort. No reason. I mean, come on, they look like women by practically any standard. It's too pushy, but mostly it's inconsistent.

I'd like to see a female character that isnt the generic "strong" female type we have been shown for the past 50 years. Why is a female only considered strong if she shows traditionally male characteristics? I love women, I love when they embrace their femininity. No one has the skill or the balls to actually write a strong female character that shows traditional female characteristics.

Loves fashion, boys and tries really hard to go on dates and have a social life. She still kicks ass when it comes to vampires and demons.

For some reason women are demonized if they choose to be mothers or stay at home wives. The most important job in the world is to be a parent. Because if anyone has ever dealt with children they can be little shits. A patents job is to turn that little shit into a good human being but nowadays we live in a world that denigrates motherhood. How about a story about a strong female character that is a mother, a story that shows how important they are, and how most of us are the people we are today because of them.

I hard disagree with you about denigrating women who choose to be stay at home moms. Simply it's far too expensive to have one income earner in a home plus we are actively encouraging women to have jobs and careers I would say it's equal now a days. Also most mothers would love to be stay at home moms it's just very rarely are they allowed to (plus it's not the healthiest thing for women you need a life outside of kids). That being said we do need more mothers in video games. I can name two father + kid relationships off the top of my head and vaguely remember another one. Mother with child however I can't name one. I would also like to see a woman who actively dislikes children because that is an attitude that is actively shunned upon in both men and women.

My Dad is an absolute piece of shit. Don't worry, when we still spoke I told him this multiple times. My Mother, trying to fill both roles, did the best she could but failed to nail either of them. This was not my Mom's fault, because parenting never should have been and never again should be the "woman's job". If you want to shoot seed in the garden, and then want to watch your indentured servant raise the crop, you are a dinosaur and dinosaurs failed. All children need a father every bit as much as a mother, and the biggest problem in the world today is shitty fathers abandoning their family. As for dollars and cents - children are expensive. If you can't afford one with both parents being active in the raising of the child, you shouldn't have children. I have no children for this reason, I have to work too much to keep a roof over our heads as it is. I like your idea, but this isn't the answer we're looking for on this. Buffy is closer, so is Legally Blonde lol.

No where did I say that it is ONLY a woman's job to raise children and that they shouldn't be able to do anything else. Children do need both a mother and a father 100% agree. I was saying maybe we can focus more stories on that aspect of motherhood. I believe women by nature are better parents because they are better with people by in large. This isn't the case for every single woman or man, but woman are better with empathizing, they have stronger emotions, while men tend to hide their emotions. And the reaction I've gotten from just that one post from the both of you just by me saying "Maybe a few more stories about strong females as mothers" tells me all I need to know about why there isn't a writer in the world with the balls to do it.

I like your idea, but this isn't the answer we're looking for on this. Buffy is closer, so is Legally Blonde lol. Buffy actually has a character in it who is the son of a Slayer. AFAIK, there was no father in the picture. That Slayer was only shown once in the character's origin story but I'd think she would be a good fit for the single mother who fights bad guys. Of course she died and her son had no parent. A stay at home father would have been a better option. Kids should get to know that at least one parent is going to survive to come home. My mother was stay at home until my brother was old enough to be able to watch me when I came home from school. Didn't make her weak. The reason why she went to work at all is so the family could do/have more: more vacations, nicer cars, better home, etc. My father's income alone was sufficient to make us fairly comfortable. We had a three-bedroom house and two cars on his income alone. Being a full-time mother isn't a bad thing. Mainly, it depends on what gain there is to the family as a whole. I do know that my brother and I developed strong bonds with our mother simply because she was there when we got home in our younger years. It's not a knock on whatever route anyone takes but this is my experience.

Maybe. The problem when subjects like this are talked about is that people read or hear what they want to hear/read. The "balls" to do it lol. Are you looking for a Godfather remake? Get the lady from Throw Momma From a Train to play Brando's role? You apparently do have balls. Can you use them to elucidate your concept a little more?

And that im confused when the only time a woman is considered strong is when they are ass kicking in “action” roles. You wanna have those strong female characters fine go for it. My mother raised 4 boys. No stories are out there glorifying her. No stories telling about her troubles and how she overcame them. Maybe there are. Im sure of it. But would they be considered strong female character the likes of Ripley? Or the way ripley is celebrated? I dont think so. And my mother is one of the strongest people i know. Not just woman. We also need more stories glorifying fatherhood. As a big problem is fatherless homes. But you know what man? When i say that no one has a problem with it. Only when I say it about a woman and motherhood.

The fact that the poster claiming he wants more "women in the home" roles while also elsewhere literally saying the only thing to thank a woman for is her tits makes me think they have other reasons they don't like women being outside the home having kids in games.
Also, hard for them to do either stay at home parent when the games have the party traveling all the time.

First how can you have more of something you never had? Second what does my sexual preference have anything to do with it? This whole subject just proves my point of why it will never happen. Lol

As one who actually detests Fallout 4’s Find Shawn narrative, and prefers to just futz about in an irradiated wasteland with my post-apocalyptic harem than find my “baby”, I’d lean pretty hard on the former. I guess if we want to talk about how to tie NPC’s into this theme through their own lives as parents, but then their being NPC’s automatically removes the “glorification” part. Best bet is having our protagonist start off as a kid a la Fallout 3, but BioWare loves killing parents, so maybe we’re better off skipping that step.

Well, it’s really a matter of integrating parental figures into our PC’s life without having them becoming sacrificial lambs to the story. Mass Effect Andromeda, such as it was, at least established that BioWare can now have our character look biologically related to other NPC’s. Being a BioWare protagonist, we can’t be parents ourselves automatically, because that essentially railroads our character into certain life choices outside of the ones necessary for us to be a participant in the main story.

Best bet is having our protagonist start off as a kid a la Fallout 3, but BioWare loves killing parents, so maybe we’re better off skipping that step. This so much this. Being an actual parent is a pretty boring character quirk and games have never been marketed on such. There's things like God of War and the last of us which make great stories involving father + kid relationships. GoW was lucky in that it had an established ip to rely on but the last of us didn't have that so it wasn't front loaded but developed over the game. The sad thing is I can't think of any games that involve a woman in that role versus a Man and I would like to see that change. It's a tad strange we haven't had one yet. I understand that, statistically speaking, the father son/daughter dynamic is going to speak to a lot more of the target audience because women are still a smaller audience when it comes to things outside of mobile games. That, however, doesn't mean it shouldn't happen. Lord knows how many men have mom issues (not to use a loaded term there but it's the best I could come up with) that would feel touched by that dynamic. Also FO4 is something I forgot about but I would say it's a shallow puddle in compared to God of war or the last of us in terms of emotional connection.
