Hey Y'all...... So in working on my personal STAR WARS Saga, the story follows one particular character on her life journey (which includes training to be and becoming a Jedi Master of course), I have tried to have different topics of focus for each book (demonstrating how she moves through her career and through life), and Book #4 I want to be very Starfighter-focused (in the spirit of the X-Wing novels, or even BSG).
But for much of the series, the main cast of characters are either planet-hopping or drifting in Space, on the run...jumping from system to system. There have been a handful of instances especially in the early stories where ground bases are established and services like an Army are put to proper use, they feel like they have a home ....But those scenes are few and far between because I wanted to paint the picture that the good guys are temporarily homeless having left the Capital and given up their authority, their safety/protection and the need to call any one place 'home'. While that definitely lends itself to being centered on the Navy and being a 'Space Opera/Science Fantasy'......the random thought that I had while thinking about this was, "what would a land-based branch of service like the Army do in Space, without a planet to land on? WIthout physical land-based battles to engage in? They would feel like a fish out of water, so to speak. How would their personnel be put to use? What would officers or soldiers in the Army or Marines do to make themselves useful out in Space (or at sea if we are talking about Earth) if there was no land to land on?"
I mean in AOTC, SOLO and even Rogue One we see the Army being put to use on a planet's surface--they're serving their purpose and doing what they were trained for. But, wjat if....in the case of BSG or Empire Strikes Back, they had to jump from system to system and stay on the move....drifting through Space with no place to call "Home" ?
The Navy has their spacecraft and starfighters and starfighter pilots.....But what does an Army soldier do while drifting out in space?
Any thoughts or ideas that anyone has to share on this topic would be helpful and appreciated. Also fun to hear your insights!
Thanks

I imagine they’d do like what army personnel in real life do on naval ships. Things like help clean the ship, maintain equipment, etc.
Also in Star Wars it seems a lot of soldiers are trained to be able to do both. They might be favored for one more than the other, but it is better to have at least some training in both. Especially with the underdog factions like the Rebellion or Resistance where they need every hand they can get.

You gotta figure they'd be an out of the way rest stop for space pilots and they would be better off disguising them selves as locals rather than announcing themselves as military. Their training could be sluffed off as hunting expeditions, meanwhile their time there would be underground training activities and intel gathering.
The underground base could also be a quick maintenance area or an arms manufacturing/distributing site.

Thanks, Nopers and Hanako for your insight. I will consider what you have said when I get back to writing (probably on the weekend). I like both of your ideas, and I think I could probably work each of your ideas into my story somehow.

Another thing you can consider is that they have a secret prison set up or maybe be set up to pick off imperial members. They send someone out to drop off bad information imperial troops, give them a password at a local bar or something and then the folks on the ground could take the trooper out of commission.

I just read an article on Wookiepedia that said even during the days of the Rebellion, Alliance officers were crossed trained in both ground and air/space combat.....so that will be helpful, thank you.
