The next season of LDR is coming out May 14, 2021. (Not far away!)
If you're not familiar with "Love Death + Robots" it's a sci-fi/fantasy anthology of adapted short stories developed by various studios. It's also thankfully adult-oriented. It has nudity, gore, and explores some pretty deep but rough themes. Not one for the kids or the prudes.

Awesome. 'Pop Squad', 'Ice' and 'The Drowned Giant' sound really cool.

Which episode was your first episode? Netflix has four different orders for some arcane reason. My first was Sonnie's Edge while my then-GF's was Three Robots.

Well that is strange. My Netflix lists Three Robots first, so I watched that one. I hope it doesn't matter much, this being an anthology and all.

No clue why they did different orders or what they were testing. Pretty much all of em are worth a watch although quality definitely dips up and down. It's interesting seeing who likes what on the subreddit, many varying tastes. Great for an anthology.
Three Robots is good stuff, my personal favourite is Beyond the Aquila Rift.

Three Robots was so good, it could have a show of it's own.
Watched three more episodes, I'm digging Sonnie's edge so far. Beyond the Aquila Rift had a Mass Effect vibe to it, which was cool.

Appreciate this, I had been expecting it but had kinda forgotten. This is a good product; not always a home run but I feel like they just swing for the fences either way. I admire that.

not always a home run but I feel like they just swing for the fences either way. I admire that. Absolutely agree. Episodes like The Witness, When the Yogurt Took Over, and Zima Blue really go for a particular style and aesthetic. Going that specific won't be to everyone's taste but is perfect for an anthology series.

Going that specific won't be to everyone's taste but is perfect for an anthology series. One of my favorite things about the first season was trying to spot where I'd seen each of the particular styles before in movies, video games and anime, and all the ones I recognized I personally associate with fun and high-quality products and other strong stories. It's really cool that the series uses elements and competence and resources from other media like that. I think more than anything else I've seen on the screen, the show just feels like pure storytelling. My favorite is probably 'Good Hunting'. It's gorgeously drawn, and even though it has elements that would flag as political or identity themed the narrative has this beautiful and strange fairy-tale quality that suspends it from getting bogged down in those kinds of discussions. It just comes out feeling like a story about an 'ordinary' person adjusting to an imperfect, changing world and a beautiful magical creature that's compromised, twisted and forced to change along with them, for better or worse. Meanwhile, 'Shape-Shifters' seems both a bit out of place among the other stories and insanely cool. I'd kill for an RPG about a European or an American werewolf having to make heads or tails of the political/military and supernatural landscape in the Middle-East.

Well... S2 is an absolute dud. Very little variation in style, generic and even repeated stories, toned down the violence, toned down the sex/nudity, toned down the visceral nature the first season had.... was so hyped for this but now I don’t even want the second slate of episodes.
Basically they took a niche concept and greatly watered It down in order to either appeal to a wider audience or appease the few vocal critics that cried about the first season being “too much”. It doesn’t even really feel like the same show now. Ugh.

'Automated Customer Service' and 'The Tall Grass' were completely forgettable though.

I'd be interested if anyone here has read any of Ken Liu's books; His writing seems superb, despite the obvious anti-British sentiments. The beginning of the episode has this storybook imagery of ancient China (I'm somewhat obsessed with Tang dynasty), which transforms fluently into full on steampunk. That was just brilliant.
I am wondering though, if the transformation of the Fox Spirit (Huli jing) is an allegory of modernizing China: For the Spirit of ancient China to overcome the Western machines, She must become a machine herself.
Agree on Shape-shifters, a very cool episode.

Agree on Shape-shifters, a very cool episode. I guess if the writer has serious beef with Western influences then that's a pretty good bet. Personally, I found it a bit less one-sided. Her and her mother were subject to these arbitrary magical rules that controlled their lives in equally humiliating ways before technology made the magic drain away, and by the end it seems like she's found an existence that suits her and still speaks to her true nature in the industrial age, even though it would ordinarily seem like an abomination, and the road to get there was a nightmare. My own analysis would just be that the fox spirit is allegory for Chinese culture having to suffer and sacrifice a lot to change and adapt and be the closest thing it can to itself in a world that the West also inhabits. Or maybe the ghost or latent grief over and outrage of that culture haunting China well into the modern world, even though it seems forgotten. But then, I'm not nearly as familiar with the subject matter. I'll give Ken Lieu's books a look at some point, if this story is any indication of his writing. In any case, The male character moves seamlessly from functioning in one world to the other because he isn't married to his own ideas about how he and the world should be, but instead thinks about how to thrive and accomplish what he wants to do within it. I like that element.

I like that element. This may not be personal at all; it is commonplace for the intellectuals to bash the West in order to stay on good terms with the Chinese government.
Yeah, it's not one-sided, quite the opposite. The episode has several themes, like sword v magic, tradition v progress, female v male and man/nature v machines. This is common in Chinese literature (of which I'm hardly an expert); there are layers within layers.
So, I agree with your analysis, particularly about the male character. He is his own man, he casts away the tradition and embraces the progress, only to become a tool for the tradition again. It is the never ending Yin Yang -cycle.
All this in a very short tv show episode.

***
I see what you mean, none of the stories have quite the same pathos as some of the ones from vol. 1. It wasn't all duds though. I really liked 'Ice' and 'Pop Squad', and 'The Drowned Giant'. And 'Snow in the Desert, ' All around the House' and 'Life Hutch' were good fun. 'Automated Customer Service' and 'The Tall Grass' were completely forgettable though. I pretty much agree straight up.
*** Automated Customer Service. I weirdly appreciated the vacuubots eye-light. They did a good job making it emotive. Got a laugh when it kept looking at her sideways as it left the room. (Shortly after it gives the poodle an impromptu haircut.) Sadly the story was mediocre. Automated customer-service sucks. Killer robot... so original, what a courageous take. *** Ice was good, I liked the art style. What I'd describe as the "most stylized" of this season. Simple story with a nice moral, bit of a twist at the end. A good fit for the anthology. Reminiscent of Zima Blue. *** Pop Squad felt the most tragic to me. (In a good way.) The concept was a little shaky but the ideas backing the setting were interesting to tackle. This season lacked the quantity of epic tragedies the last season had. This episode helped fill that niche. (And I do like me some tragedy.) *** Snow in the Desert. Visually it was superb except for one huge flaw. Snow's facial animations seem a magnitude of order worse than his skin/overlay. Otherwise it's damn pretty. Still dunno why animators can't grasp the idea that muscles below skin change the shape of a face every time it moves. A skeleton and skin isn't enough. Story was interesting. I liked the implied concept that the central earth government seemed genuinely good. It's pretty tropey these days to make the earth-gov evil in a lot of sci-fi. The episode had a weirdly hopeful and bright outlook on things that's hidden beneath a lot of dirt. Potential immortality, a government of AI that might actually not be evil, and at the end of it, a possible soulmate. *** The Tall Grass. I liked a few shots of the glowing in the grass but overall it seemed, trivial? Like this was an introduction to a larger story, not a self contained short. *** All Through the House. I dunno why but this one amused me. Not at all complex and I'd otherwise pan it as mediocre but the take on Santa was well thought out. The scene giving them presents was for me funny. Ending it with the question I'd been pondering was perfect. I'm not sure I'd score this high if I was recommending it to random people but for me personally it hit a funny bone. Unexpectedly so from my very first impressions. *** Life Hutch. Okay, first and foremost. Instant flashbacks to AMEE from Red Planet(2000). So it's really pretty, but horror doesn't do much for me. Was more invested in the alien-ship-attack than the malfunctioning robot. Similar to Tall Grass it was a short story that lacked a vital twist. Might appeal to the horror genre fans a bit more? *** Drowned Giant. This one was a miss for me.
Had to really suspend my disbelief for this one. While I absolutely agree and believe an ignorant bunch of yokels would stomp all over the thing I also, more so, believe the giant would be cordoned off in a matter of hours by first responders. (Fire, Police, etc.) I mean, the group of scientists calmly watching a world-changing discovery get trampled on and contaminated makes 0 sense.
It was verbose, but I wasn't caught up in it. It wasn't eloquent.
***

I am wondering though, if the transformation of the Fox Spirit (Huli jing) is an allegory of modernizing China: For the Spirit of ancient China to overcome the Western machines, She must become a machine herself. Haven't read em. I liked the episode, didn't take too much from it initially. My first take changed though after seeing how my (then gf) viewed it. She loved it, her favourite episode. She's been through some pretty terrible things in her life. She saw it as a story about trauma and adapting to your life after something irrevocably changes you. There was much more to her perspective that I won't go into but it definitely made me rewatch it with that idea in mind. I liked the episode more for seeing it from that viewpoint. Also focused a bit more on Yan and Liang's platonic friendship subsequently. How it survived years and dramatic changes. Love the series. Good Hunting is by far my favorite. Little disappointed with only 8 episodes to season 2. Pandemic hit em pretty hard I believe. Sourcing multiple studios across various states and countries, some of which are located in heavy urban centers, probably dragged things to a crawl. Type of industry where remote-work is viable but getting the infrastructure up took time.
