An NUC is perfect for your Dad, and there might be one that has some lighting but I doubt it. Thus, it would work great and he wouldn't be happy with it. With him, I would recommend changing his mind about how he thinks about storage, and perhaps make a shared network attached storage that they both use as a backup device and can function as a media server etc. Get a Synology for them maybe, and then help him understand why it doesn't matter where the storage is as long as he has it. This enables you to get him an NUC or build a basic business PC for him (maybe mATX/mini-ITX) and a passive cooled GPU like the 1030 I have in my old gaming PC that I have converted to a Ubuntu server. Whisper quiet, renders webpages fine and plays streaming video fine. Haven't tried to game on it, but older titles would be fine at 1080p on medium settings. I love my NAS, has great syncing tools and can obviously function as a backup device (Time Machine-ability for you Apple folk). My philosophy in my builds has changed as my networking knowledge has grown - I now prefer more, smaller, purpose-built PCs over one jack-of-all-trades. I have a RPi3 as a PiHole DNS server, it can do more without being overwhelmed (like VPN, sonar/radar, etc). My Synology DS218+ has 8TBs of mirrored storage, and houses all of my music, movies and pictures. Bye-bye all of my jewel cases and shelves of media in boxes, and again this device can do more should I choose to assign it more duties My old gaming PC is now a test vehicle for labs, experimenting with Linux, emulation, and more storage. Specifically, this device is business related now. Finally, I am still rocking my Nvidia Shield 2015 as my primary media player. It streams perfectly 4k from the Synology, no hitches or glitches. We still have a BD player in case we rent something or for some reason need to play a CD (lol), but it doesn't get much use anymore. Finally, I have the beast gaming rig. ... This is not a brag post, hopefully it doesn't come off as such. I feel like your Dad wants things he doesn't need, but this approach could simplify your build/purchase decisions for both of them. In your Mom's rig, she would need storage only for games. In your Dad's, OS storage is all he'd really need. You can get them both what they want, with a little compromise

Same situation here in the Great White North; world shortage of semi-conductors, gold and other materials isn't helping matters, but it could also be a supply shortage in that the companies can't manufacture GPUs fast enough to keep up with the high demand. But I'm not looking for a 30 series. I bought a 2080 Super FTW 3 Ultra Gaming about a year ago (exactly one year ago next Tuesday May 25th, 2020), and it has been an amazing card for all the games I play at 4K. And I typically like to get a minimum of 5 years of solid use from my GPUs before I spring for something new Now you know why we keep telling dragontartare to buy a pre-built PC instead of building one herself. Getting an RTX 30-series video card at MSRP is nearly impossible right now. You have to compete with other buyers and scalpers using bots that can buy video cards as soon as they come in stock. MSRP of the 30-series is supposed to be about $800-$1200 right?
I am laughing at this: $3,175.00 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe how ridiculous this is getting. Last fall I picked up an RX 5500 XT for $200 without any difficulty.

Jeez... now I'm tempted to pop my 750 ti back in. They are saying the shortage might last for another year. So just enjoy your 5500 XT and don't worry about it. You can also keep the 750 Ti as a backup just in case.

Custom-loop build expert JayzTwoCents just made a video about buying pre-built systems from system integrators.
It's a little technical but you should still watch it.

I got my 2070 Super FE last summer for $499. The only one I can find for sale now is $1200 Custom-loop build expert JayzTwoCents just made a video about buying pre-built systems from system integrators. It's a little technical but you should still watch it. I didn't find it all that technical. I'm subbed to Jay, but sometimes I wish he would get to the point or start naming names. That said, I decided to reproduce NZXT's starter gaming PC (the one my mom is hoping for) on PCPartPicker, using the same components as much as possible, and it came out $125 more expensive on PCPartPicker. The GPU is the problem there, obviously, since I doubt NZXT is paying $500 for a 1650. But at least it doesn't seem like NZXT is price gouging. With him, I would recommend changing his mind about how he thinks about storage, and perhaps make a shared network attached storage that they both use as a backup device and can function as a media server etc. This is a good idea, and in fact he has an external HDD somewhere that might still be functional This is not a brag post, hopefully it doesn't come off as such. No, it didn't I feel like your Dad wants things he doesn't need Indeed he does. In your Mom's rig, she would need storage only for games. In your Dad's, OS storage is all he'd really need. You can get them both what they want, with a little compromise I think with my dad, I may be able to convince him to go with a smaller SSD with the assurance that I can always add more storage later if he needs it. (Which he won't.) Then we can put the money saved over getting a Mac toward plenty of RGB components. His should be easy in any case. Convincing him of what he needs is the hardest part.

Newegg marketplace has some 1650's for around that price, from sellers with less than wonderful ratings.
I've purchased from Newegg themselves before, but never used their marketplace. Is it even a good idea to buy a GPU from one of those sellers? Or would it be risky akin to buying a GPU from eBay?
Even though my mom chose to keep it simple and go pre-built, I'm still watching GPU prices in case her pre-built doesn't come back in stock, so it would be good to know whether Newegg marketplace is safe to consider.

Some people have had good luck with Ebay and Newegg -others not so much -I fall into the latter. If they are a third party seller and less than stellar rating more than likely the item isn't new. Though they may say it is.
IF I HAD a Micro Center close to me they would always be my first choice -though... The nearest of those is over 550 MILES away!!!!!!!!!!! Though I think Amazon is the usually the number one source for most people since it usually list items cheaper:
For example: SilverStone Tek 2.4G Wireless Power Remote with Power/Reset Function That said they do have their problems -that I don't condone.

However, your choices are kind of limited at the moment. There are a lot more risks whenever you buy something from a third party seller or eBay. The good thing is that Amazon, Newegg, and eBay all have fairly good buyer protection. So if anything goes wrong such as you getting scammed, they should have you covered. So yeah, just use common sense. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

I hate the new amazon sidebar buying layout. Anyway the link -it says $488 at the moment.
Its the cheapest with 100% rating being sold by a third party called: Gifts Enterprise for $434. The good thing is that if you know where to look Amazon gives the company information. Information you can research via google or yahoo or whatever search engine you use to validate if they are reputable.
Just make a favorite on multiple pages of Newegg, Amazon and Micro Center websites.
Make multiple tabs in browsers and refresh it as often as you can.
Also maybe watch the psychologist office since after this graphics card shortage is over and the people with PTSD have finished making appointments. They may leave them behind there.

You just might get lucky finding what you want. (That specific system only comes with 8GB of RAM but I know you could take care of that easily.) For the better bang for her buck, it would be something like this, but that's way out of the $1000 budget. So just search around yourself. These pre-built systems constantly come in and out of stock.

We're avoiding companies like Dell and HP, however.

Yes, of course I looked But she isn't going to want to spend almost $1400, or even $1200. I do see others on Best Buy's website that are in her budget, such as that cheaper Cyberpower PC one. It's only got 8GB of RAM and is $50 more than the one she's hoping to get, but the GPU seems to be a bit better than the 1650, so something like this would be a viable backup choice.

It's definitely worth getting something like a GTX 1660 Super or even an RX 580/590 over the GTX 1650. The 1660 Super is about 50-70% faster than the 1650 in some games. Even the RX 580/590 is 20-40% faster than the 1650.

Yup. It's definitely worth getting something like a GTX 1660 Super or even an RX 580/590 over the GTX 1650. The 1660 Super is about 50-70% faster than the 1650 in some games. Even the RX 580/590 is 20-40% faster than the 1650. Good to know about the RX 580. That opens up some search possibilities. I did try to convince her to kick in extra money for a 1660 Super build, but she feels so guilty spending money on herself that she won't consider it, even when I offered to pay the difference I'll keep working on her, though.

How about: www.amazon.com/SkyTech-Blaze-Gaming-Computer-Desktop/dp/B07RL4K6CNAnd to circumvent that it only has 8 Gigs get one of these: www.newegg.com/team-8gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820331335?Since that is the same speed and type of memory the system is supposed to have. Total should be $964.98 -just add the shipping and handling...
I don't know if that will put it over the max though... The system and chip isn't from a third party but is from Amazon and the Chip looks like its from Newegg.
As a nice bonus as it has an actual Ryzen processor: 2600 -not an APU.

I hate to recommend Reddit for anything, but have you visited r/hardwareswap, dragontartare? I sold my old 970 in minutes there a few months ago (gave a very fair price, which is now hundreds less than I could have got. I actually feel great about it ) People generally seem to be resisting the greed there, and it is well moderated (for Reddit especially).
