I am about to give up trying to play DA:O but thought I'd ask here, just in case someone can help me.
Basically, my game crashes when I try to log in, but if I open my earliest save, I can then load my current save after that and I was resigned to dealing with that work around. However, I'm now stuck in Lothering and can't leave the Chantry (it's possible Andraste is calling to me I suppose, but I think my problems are more tiresome and mundane). The game just CTDs at the loading screen when I change areas.
I know I'm not the only person with this problem - I've been trawling the internet for the last three days for help - but there doesn't seem to be a definite solution.
I'm playing the Ultimate Edition from Origin. I've up-to-date GPU drivers, I've applied the 4GB patch. I've reinstalled the game several times. I've reduced the resolution/graphics etc. I've tried with and without mods. I've tried starting the game from the daorigins.exe file, rather than through Origin.
I'm very sad. The game is looking great, I'm very much enjoying meeting old friends, but I'm now at the no-sense-of-humour stage of trying to fix it. I suspect my only hope is an as yet to exist Dragon Age Legendary Edition.
If anyone has any suggestions they are very welcome.
Many thanks!

Can you successfully load earlier saves from the playthrough? Or start a new game? If so, your latest save may be damaged or corrupted.
A list of the mods you had installed when the issue cropped up might be helpful as well.

theskymoves - thank you so much for responding to me. I've been noticing how kind and helpful you are with people and it's very much appreciated! So, I've been playing with this mod list since the start of my play through:- AHOOB Hair Alistair Kiss Alistair proposal Awakening Silverite Mine Fix Quinn's Ultimate Fix Extra Dog Slot Better Mabari Dragon Age Redesigned (npcs only no companions) Isabela and Flemeth Fix Mabari Coats Neural Enhanced Textures Theta HD Unique Face Textures White Teeth Grey Wardens of Ferelden Helmet Hack Improved Atmosphere (with latest applied fix pack - thanks to you pointing out in another thread) Less Barking Dog Lock Bash Madd Gifts Misha the Hoarder Of Noble Cast Personal Annoyance Remover Skip the Fade Sten of the Beresaad - with the Qunari update Female Noble Clothing Ferelden Menswear Transfer Stats Weapon Replacer Zeveran ASAP - but the loose files not the dazip as per Quinn's instructions I've been using DAO ModManager for installing dazips and the override file for the Weapon Replacer. The game was playing beautifully until I hit Ostagar and logged out. At that point I started getting CTD if I tried to load a save, until I discovered I could load an earlier save (or strangely, an autosave) and then load my latest save, which would then work. Zoning was fine, running around was fine, no random crashes. Just this continuing thing with loading saves. That is until now, where I can load all my previous saves (with the above method) and run about, but I can't now leave the Lothering Chantry without it crashing. I'm stuck in there with the constantly chanting brothers and the sad refugees. D:

Ah! Well ok, I've removed the entire Documents/Bioware/Dragon Age/packages/core/overrides folder, and I'm now able to leave the Chantry, albiet nekked, with no head and disembodied eyeballs, but I'm out. Which would indicate, I guess, that it's a mod thing?

The first thing I noticed in your list of mods is 'Skip the Fade'. I use it as well, but it has caused me problems, including crashes at unexpected times. I typically only enable it (using modmanager) right before I go the the third floor in the Tower and disable it after leaving the Fade. That may not be your particular problem, but that's the one that leaped out at me. I don't currently use it but Qwinn's used to have the reputation of not playing well with other mods. He may have fixed his compatibility since, but you may want to give a look at other fix mods in lieu of Qwinn's. Hope this helps!

Were I a gamblin' woman, my money would be on Improved Atmosphere as the cause of your crashing. If you search the comments on the mod's Nexus page for the term 'lothering', you'll see there are other reports of crashing when trying to exit the Lothering Chantry.
Neither Improved Atmosphere nor Qwinn's Fixpack play well with other mods, and both are currently unsupported by the modder, with known and unresolved bugs.

mousestalker theskymoves - Righto, I'll take your advice and report back. What a shame, I was particularly looking forward to Quinn's working, because I know lots of dialogue went MIA. I'll have to rummage around for the dialogue fixes I used to use. If you have any suggestions for alternatives I'd be very grateful. Thanks so much again for your time and help.

Just a quick update and then I'll go away (for a bit at least!)
I'M OUT OF THE CHANTRY!! YAY!!! And running about and have lovely graphics back.
And, I *think* I may have found the culprit. I'm rather mortified about this because it's right there in the 'known issues' on the Nexus descriptions page - AP Neural Enhanced Textures. It says 'crashes in Lothering' /facepalm. What a der brayne I am! Again, it's a shame because it makes the game look great.
I went down so many rabbit holes with fixes etc, I lost track of my checklists. *blushes*
But so relieved to escape from the gloomy and barmy chanting! We'll see.
Thanks again!

I had this problem with the game crashing either just after the warden's dream of the archdemon or in Denerim (entereing Wonders of Thedas). I changed my graphics setting to medium and all is joy. So far......

I have Quinn's mod, plus a bunch of other bug fixes. The only mod, other than some QOL fixes for the UI/text size, is the new "remaster" mod ... skipping all the other visual improvement mods. So far, other than the occasional issue having to load a previous save on boot, then return to latest save that crashes upon boot, but works fine after (which I had before) ... the only bug I've encountered so far is the Grey Warden armor on Sten makes him invisible. I'm pretty impressed with the "all in one" unofficial remaster, version 1.2 is out, correcting some bugs before I had a chance to encounter them in-game. I applied it during Awakening, played through Amgarrak and Witch Hunt, currently playing the base game, in the deep roads about to confront Bronka ... game has been stable (with the Quinn and other bug-squashing mods installed) and the graphics are more than just a little bit better. You have to install the LAA mod to use the remaster mod ... something that benefits DAO (and DA2) regardless. I recently replaced my computer and monitor, did not notice much change in DAO graphic quality between the two computers, but applying the remaster mod ... whoa ... that was noticeable.
