...my mom. She's 70 and a beginning gamer. She still struggles with controls (including just navigating the game world) but is loving the hobby so far. Her PC specs: Ryzen 5 2600 GTX 1650 G6 16 GB DDR4 1080p 60 Hz display Her favorite games so far: - AC Discovery Tour Viking Age - her favorite. She loves the combination of uncovering a story while experiencing the beautiful scenery.
- AC Discovery Tour Origins - she likes the guided tour aspect, but definitely prefers Viking Age (same with Discovery Tour Odyssey)
- Witcher 3 - heavily modded to help her stay alive
- Everybody's Gone to the Rapture - like with Viking Age, she enjoys taking in the scenery while uncovering a story.
She also has a few other walking simulators that she enjoyed, as well as a train simulator which she thinks is beautiful, but she got frustrated because she kept crashing the trains. I don't know if it's her, or if the controls are bad. Games I have suggested and she didn't like or wasn't interested in: - Life is Strange series - modern setting with stylized graphics (she prefers more realistic graphics in a historical or fantasy settings)
- The Longest Journey/Dreamfall - too stylized, plus she doesn't like the urban setting in some sections of the games
- Firewatch - too stylized
- Dragon Age
- Mass Effect
She's interested in actually playing some Assassin's Creed games once she feels more comfortable with the controls, but not just yet, and I can't mod them in the mean time. She also said "maybe one day" to the Sims so she can build houses. Do any of you have ideas for games she might like?

Does she play with a controller or with keyboard and mouse?
Games like Journey are visually immersive, you can't die in them and are pretty straight forward movement wise.
Do you plan to play with her at all? Maybe games like monopoly, game of life, Cluedo are also good options.

Adventure games like;
The Longest Journey Monkey Island Forgotten Anne Journey Broken Sword series The Dark Eye Chains of Santinav Memoria Blade Runner
are straight forward point and click. The same with visual novels like Cinders and Queen at Arms.
Maybe she would like exploring interesting environments like Subnautica though there're some creatures in there that might frighten her since they tend to appear unexpectedly.

Does she play with a controller or with keyboard and mouse? Keyboard and mouse. I suggested a controller to her because I thought she might find it easier, but she doesn't want to change things. Games like Journey are visually immersive, you can't die in them and are pretty straight forward movement wise. She may say it's too stylized, but it does look nice. I may get it myself and have her try it out before she buys it. Do you plan to play with her at all? Maybe games like monopoly, game of life, Cluedo are also good options. We haven't played anything together yet, though it's a possibility if we find something we both like that has a multiplayer mode. She doesn't typically like board games. Cluedo might appeal to her though, as it looks like it actually has an environment to explore. I will suggest it to her. Thank you for the response!

She has already said no to this series, unfortunately. The art is too stylized for her (yep, she's a bit picky ) and the later entries have some dystopian futuristic environments that she doesn't care for. Monkey Island Forgotten Anne Journey Broken Sword series The Dark Eye Chains of Santinav Memoria Blade Runner I will suggest these Her desire for the graphics to not be stylized makes it hard to find games in her preferred genre, but hopefully some of the ones suggested will appeal to her.

How about the Talia Principle? It’s got nice graphics, chill gameplay, cool puzzles and an in treating story.
Or maybe Subnautica. If managing hunger/thirst is too stressful, IIRC it has an easy mode that’s all about building and exploration.
Obduction also has fairly realistic optics but a very “out there” setting and the puzzles are fairly challenging (maybe too much so, might get frustrating).
Also,I think The Vanishing of Ethon Carter is a kind of walking simulator with nice optics but I never played it myself.
If she likes the Nordic setting of Valhalla, maybe it would also be worth looking into Skyrim with some easy mods (and some graphics enhancements.

The only thing I can think outside of what has been recommended is games that might fall into the "walking simulator" approach.
What Remains of Edith Finch The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Death Stranding
Gone Home (might be too stylized) Firewatch (might be too stylized)

Detroit Become Human
Beyond - Two Souls
Cyberpunk 2077 (I know, a bit weird, but hey, she enjoyed Witcher)
The Banner Saga series (because of the Viking type she likes. Made by former Bioware staff. Not sure she will like the graphic style).
Greedfall (ain't bad looking, ain't hard to play, very story focused and has an interesting Age of Discovery fantasy setting)
Death Stranding - literally the pretty looking walking simulator.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions so far! She's being so picky, but I hope she will like some of these. Also,I think The Vanisching of Ethon Carter is a kind of walking simulator with nice optics but I never played it myself. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter I have been intending to play this game myself. I should have thought of it I will suggest this one to her. If she likes the Nordic setting of Valhalla, maybe it would also be worth looking into Skyrim with some easy mods (and some graphics enhancements. I keep forgetting Skyrim exists You might be on to something there, though. I'll play around with some mods on my copy and I may be able to turn it into something she will really like. What Remains of Edith Finch Gone Home (might be too stylized) Firewatch (might be too stylized) I have played these myself and suggested them to her, but unfortunately she wasn't interested as they were too stylized. It's too bad, because I thought the stories were great. Death Stranding - literally the pretty looking walking simulator. She might not like the modern setting, but I will suggest it anyway as she sometimes likes sci-fi. It looks like a cool game. Obduction also has fairly realistic optics but a very “out there” setting and the puzzles are fairly challenging (maybe too much so, might get frustrating). Another game I forgot about. I have a copy on Steam, so I can let her play it on my computer and see if she likes it at all. How about the Talia Principle? It’s got nice graphics, chill gameplay, cool puzzles and an in treating story. Or maybe Subnautica. If managing hunger/thirst is too stressful, IIRC it has an easy mode that’s all about building and exploration. Talos Principle? It looks cool and I've heard good things. I will suggest both of these two her. Cyberpunk 2077 (I know, a bit weird, but hey, she enjoyed Witcher) She will likely say no to both of these due to the settings, but I will suggest them as she can always try out my copies first. The Banner Saga series (because of the Viking type she likes. Made by former Bioware staff. Not sure she will like the graphic style). Greedfall (ain't bad looking, ain't hard to play, very story focused and has an interesting Age of Discovery fantasy setting) I will suggest both of these. I don't think she'll go for Banner Saga due to the art style, but who knows. Greedfall looks awesome.

Dragon Age Mass Effect LOL. I think we've all been there in some form or another. What did she think of Gwent in TW3? Thronebreaker maybe? Its a great prequel story following Queen Meve's guerilla campaign during the 2nd war with Nilfgaard, events that are not covered in any detail in the books. Also, card battles are skippable on easy difficulty.

If she likes vikings, how about Expeditions: Viking? It's an RPG. The graphics are fairly naturalistic though not the flashiest. It is turn based and isometric, though; don't know how she'd feel about that. If she does like it, a sequel set in ancient Rome is coming out literally next month—I'm looking forward to it myself For more historical games, maybe Desperados 3 if she likes westerns? It plays like a puzzle game and mistakes can be undone pretty much instantly with quicksave and quickload. Never mind that it's the third in a series; it's a prequel so you don't need to now the previous games. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is a similar if somewhat older game by the same studio, but the graphics are a little more stylized. I can't vouch for it personally, but I've heard good things about A Plague Tale: Innocence. It's an adventure game set in medieval France, and the visuals look realistic and quite pretty. There's a free demo on Steam if you want to give it a shot first.

What did she think of Gwent in TW3? I think she avoids it whenever possible. She prefers riding Roach around and gradually advancing the story. Thanks anyway, though If she likes vikings, how about Expeditions: Viking? It's an RPG. The graphics are fairly naturalistic though not the flashiest. If she's into building or strategy more than fighting, maybe something like the Anno games or Crusader Kings III? Anno 1707 is a super chill game that has sucked up a ridiculous amount of my time and CK3 has a number of settings that can make it easy and enjoyable to create an enormous and powerful dynasty, even if you don't want to conquer the known world. The controls for both are mostly mouse clicks or fairly straight-forward keybinds.

Planning on doing a 4th run soon in fact The combat isn't difficult as mos tof the time it's jus ta case of spotting the weakpoints on a machine and hitting them and most of the weakpoints are pretty easy to hit and spot. But because it's an open world game it can get a little unpredictable as to when you'll ge tambushed by them or other enemies much like the wildlife in games like DAI and MEA. I don' t mind it too muc hbecause on Story mode difficulty it onl ygets awkward if you're having to fight a few a tonce or fighting the bigger machines such as the Thunderjaws. Things like Watchers and Striders and that ae rfairly easy as you can either just shoot them in the eye or in the tanks on their back

Unfortunately quite a lot of combat since its an open world game.

If any of you have a boomer or boomer-at-heart in your life and you want them to play BioWare games, apparently all you need to do is show them this video: Within minutes, your boomer will call you up, asking whether you've heard of Dragon Age Inquisition and if you think they'd like it, as if you hadn't already tried to convince them they should play the game After that, simply appeal to "that lady on YouTube" as you show them (again) a bit of Mass Effect gameplay, and they will decide they want to play Mass Effect as well. Not that I'm complaining. It's just, well...she could have just believed me all those months ago. So anyway, she's loving DAI and started MELE1 today. The turian love has already begun. It's genetic, I guess. She said Nihlus is "so cute" and is upset that he died. She's kind of going renegade so far, which surprises me, though it's still very early in the game so I guess anything could happen. She also called Solas her friend, and I'm almost tempted to warn her. Almost.

No! No warnings!
Think of it as payback.
Hehehe...
Reminds me how Mom got one of the Witcher books borrowed off a friend way back. First reaction was "Well I have another equally cool thing here!" and showed her my copy of The Calling. Or was it Stolen Throne? One of the two. Anyway, you can guess how that went.

Here her channel: www.youtube.com/c/ShirleyCurryTheOlderGamerBtw congrats on getting your mother into gaming. My mother is 66 and I've been trying to get her into gaming forever.
