So, I watched Arcane on Netflix last night after sleeping on it.
I was blown away. I’ve never played League of Legends (And won’t) but I am interested in this lore now. More importantly the character driven drama in this show is off the charts: the tragedy and trauma in these characters…. Wow. And it really doesn’t hold back. Maybe not a super groundbreaking story in many respects but very well executed.
Not what I expected from this art style, which grew on me. It’s a gorgeously animated show even if some of the music choices didn’t do it for me. Pretty much everything else from the writing to the art to the acting is top notch.
Anyone else seen this?

Watched it all a week or two ago. The first couple eps I was interested but not engrossed. Ep 3 hooked me. Particularly the ending.
I also don't play LoL, didn't have any expectations or knowledge going in. I mean, I was a bit biased against it because "lol it's a show about a moba". Glad I didn't let that deter me. Turned out to be a great surprise. Great acting, phenomenal art direction, and an intriguing well paced story. This didn't feel like a quick Netflix deal to help promote a game. I wasn't expecting it to get so dark and lean into tragedy/mental health. The art style they used meshed perfectly. (Jinx's mental breakdowns were executed really well visually.)

Watched the first three episodes so far. It's more ammo for my argument that fantasy is much better suited to animation than live action, though of course there are exceptions. Also haven't played LoL and have no intention of doing so (everyone who has played it says it's nothing like the show anyway), but it does make me wish Riot would make a proper RPG in this universe—the Battle Chasers reskin doesn't count.

So apparently Sting is set to perform “what could have been” from Arcane at the game awards tomorrow.
I was already going to tune in for game announcements, but now I have another reason.

I think it’s one of the best things I’ve seen in quite a long time. The art style and animation is nothing short of glorious, and I absolutely love its characters and story. It’s easily the absolute best game adaptation ever made, and I doubt it’ll be beat for a good long time. I think knowing as little about LoL as possible actually serves to its benefit. Also, watching Vi fight people is so satisfying. Sevika was constantly catching those hands lol

I didn't know the LoL lore before watching it either, but reading some comments online it's a prequel with a lots of changes anyway. Many of the main characters don't exist in the games (ex: Silko, Sevika, Mel) and Vi is basically a different character. I watched it over the weekend. Twice. The second time was to understand why so many people were so emotional at the end of ep9. I feel like some people online never watched some gut-wrenching anime before. Saying that, I really liked it and the animation quality is god-tier (I wouldn't be surprised to learn they used mocap a lot), but I find that the story/character development is overhyped. The story was good, but nothing ground-breaking to me. I suspect the budget for it was pretty crazy... I wouldn't mind a RPG set in Runeterra too and I discovered that Riot is working on a MMORPG (started like last Summer, so years of waiting...).

The story was good, but nothing ground-breaking to me. At least for me, the thing is that adult fantasy TV usually struggles to even be passable, much less good. So while the story may not be groundbreaking, it is all around solid and makes for a much better show than The Shannara Chronicles, The Witcher, The Wheel of Time... Even Carnival Row, a somewhat similar show I more or less liked, has good visuals but substantially worse writing than Arcane. Pair a "merely" good story with some of the best animation out there, and I completely get the hype.

Yes, compared to those, Arcane has very good writing. I get your Carnival Row reference too.

To reiterate Gwydden, there’s a sea of mediocrity in the particular adult fantasy/sci-fi space this show occupies. A lot of shows with interesting visuals (I’m not the only one that likes Carnival Row? Huzzah!) have only ”okay” writing. So when I went into Arcane with low expectations (Everything else aside, it’s a spinoff from a MOBA, how good could it be?) I was genuinely shocked it has as much quality as it has in pretty much every facet. And a lot of people haven’t watched good anime *shrug*.

And a lot of people haven’t watched good anime *shrug*. Outside of Japan, most adults think it's a medium exclusive to kiddy stuff unfortunately. I'm hoping Arcane will make more people try to watch them thought. Although, like everything else, there is a lot of trash among anime too. I feel the fantasy/scifi genre is just way more suited to anime productions. It's basically CGI all the way instead of filming the whole thing with real actors on sets and then applying CGI all the way on top of it.

Got reminded of Mira Furlan, who passed away earlier this year, in another thread. Was looking at her IMDB page and got a bit of a surprise. Looks like her last Actress credit is Arcane, voicing Babette. I didn't know she was in it, keep my ear open next time.

Just some quotes I'd like to comment on: So was I. Episodes 1-3 are some of the best animation I've seen in years. a gorgeously animated show It really is fabulous. Apparently this was the studio's first serious work. For me, this rivals Studio Ghibli. Yup, professional VA work at it's best. Turned out to be a great surprise. I doubt I would've found the series without this thread. Thank you! watching Vi fight people is so satisfying The fights were well done; I didn't expect this at all. Did I love it? Well, yes. Could it have been better? I think so. I don't know if it was deliberate or not, but it felt like it was made in three parts, sort of like The Godfather trilogy. Episodes 1-3: The beginning, the time when cops and criminals had an understanding, and were in an agreement. It was steampunk, and I loved it. Episodes 4-6: The sequel, or at least it was for me. The new generation has taken over, and it's all about crime and corruption. Also, female cops now wear Japanese school uniforms. Episodes 7-9: Part three, where it still resembles the series I loved so much, but it's clear, that we've come a long way. Not really a fan, but will watch because I want to see how it ends. Also, huge anime weapons have arrived. I tend to over-analyse, I know.

When I think about it, there was probably about three season’s worth of storylines in this show that could have been drawn out more. A bit more time exploring the childhood world of characters like Vi, Powder, and Ekko would have been nice, plus the relationship between Piltover and the underworld. instead it was very compressed, though they still managed to make it not feel too rushed. it seems this series started with “let’s tell the story of how Jinx became the unstable rocket girl she is in LoL” so they had to reach that endpoint in 9 episodes.

Outside of Japan, most adults think it's a medium exclusive to kiddy stuff unfortunately. In Japan as well, I assure you. My friends and I asked some Japanese college students whether they liked anime when I was there; some of them seemed downright insulted Yeah, I get that. I have the opposite opinion. One of the things I liked about the show is that it's fast paced and no scene is wasted. There's a tendency in fantasy and sci fi (not just TV, but books as well) towards self-justifying gigantism: a 200 page novel won't do, it must be 600 at least; a standalone or trilogy is much too short, any respectable series needs seven volumes at least; it's not enough to have a small cast, you need dozens upon dozens of characters. It leads to a lot of redundancy, filler, and poor pacing. I suspect the creative choice to avoid that in the show was largely motivated by how expensive this animation must be. For a good return on investment, you kind of have to drop anything extraneous. I like it.

For a good return on investment, you kind of have to drop anything extraneous. I like it. I actually agree that the show was very efficient with how it used its time. Nothing was wasted, but that doesn’t mean nothing was missing… Two big examples come to mind: The death of Viktor’s assistant. It’s a very poignant moment for Viktor, and I think it worked, but I didn’t even realize she had a name up until then. A little more build up about her would have helped.
The fight between Jinx and Ekko, which heavily implies that they were childhood friends but never interacted in the first three episodes. Again, it’s not really needed, the scenes work as is, but it would have worked just a little bit better if that relationship had been fleshed out a little.
Again, none of these make the show bad, just payoffs that would have been a bit better had they been more properly built up.

Japan has not-cartoon/anime TV network that broadcast anime series at various point in the day depending of demographic including prime-time for family-wide and late night for adult (not porn, it's for series like Psycho-Pass aka what Cyberpunk 2077 should have been or when Arcane would play if it was made for Japan TV).

I wish they'd make a live-action series of my favourite Fantasy novels, "The Night Angel Trilogy" by Brent Weeks. Or even his follow-up series "Lightbringer"
There's some fan-made stuff on youtube that actually looks like it could be professionally done....But an actual Pro job would be preferred.

I recently came across the Den of Geek article ranking the 25 best shows from 2021 and was surprised to see Arcane absent except as one among many honorable mentions. It doesn't seem like a site that would neglect that kind of show, and there is already animation on the list i.e. Invincible, which is pretty good as well, but Arcane's animation blows Invincible's out of the water.
This kind of confirms an impression I have gotten from elsewhere, that Arcane is a bizarrely more obscure than I'd expect it to be, particularly since those who have watched it have overwhelmingly good things to say about it. Is it because it's an animated show that has nothing to do with superheroes? Because it's (nominally) a video game adaptation? Or because it's based on League of Legends of all things, specifically? It's curious.

It's curious. Seeing it was based off LoL definitely made me hesitate.
