I think they're fine anytime, really. But sometimes it simply hinges on luck in the moment. Right place, right time (See: Paul Henderson's series clinching goal in '72 in Canada v. Russia.....OR Sidney Crosby's 'Gold" winning goal during the 2010 Beijing Olympics.)


Oddly though, in the case of Paul Henderson....that goal in Canada v. Russia was/is the ONLY thing he is known for. He didn't do much when he played (briefly) for Detroit....and he did even less when he played for Toronto between the 67-68 season and the end of the 73-74 season. he was considered a fast skater and good puck handler, but he was good because of other players around him.
