Found another thread about him after digging through the posts here, but I'm in no mood to hide spoilers...so I'm starting a new thread.
It was a bit obvious that he was going to betray the PC particularly when he stops being your cypher. Might have been wiser to at least have him be your cypher for side missions and/or freeroam, but at this point that's all water under the bridge.
A Few Observations:
- He doesn't lie to the PC and we know he's capable of it because it's the first thing we see him doing in the game.
- He doesn't attack the PC and we know he's quite capable of killing another person. (If that dead Dominion soldier he carries back to your final conversation is anything to go by.)
- He doesn't seem to have any remarkable amount of malice toward anyone with the possible exception of those Dominion soldiers attacking Haluk. His reason for lying to the cypher at the beginning of the game wasn't malicious and during his betrayal he says the Monitor will not attack the fort if he joins them.
- His reaction to hearing the Anthem seems different from other cyphers. When Faye talks about it she's in awe, but Owen (after he's heard it) is more matter-of-fact. When Faye first hears it she looses focus, but Owen has enough focus to note the Monitor's reaction and why he would be drawn to it. I'm left wondering if the part of him that broke when he became a cypher might be protecting him from the Anthem's crippling effect.
Would like to see where his story goes...reconciliation, redemption, sacrifice or is this the beginning of one of those delicious frenemie relationships. Think Batman/Joker or James West/Dr. Loveless (TV series Loveless and not that trash one from the movie.)
