The Witcher @witchergamethewitcher.ly/ANewSagaBegins MARCH 1ST, 2022We’re happy to announce that the next installment in The Witcher series of video games is currently in development, kicking off a new saga for the franchise. This is an exciting moment as we’re moving from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5, beginning a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games. It covers not only licensing, but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine, where relevant. We'll closely collaborate with Epic Games’ developers with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences. At this point, no further details regarding the game — such as a development time frame or release date — are available. REDengine, the technology which powers Cyberpunk 2077, is still being used for the development of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion. New Witcher Saga Announced. CD PROJEKT RED Begins Development on Unreal Engine 5 as Part of a Strategic Partnership with Epic GamesCD PROJEKT RED today revealed that the next installment in The Witcher series of video games is currently in development with Unreal Engine 5, kicking off a new saga for the franchise and a new technology partnership with Epic Games. Today’s announcement marks the first official confirmation of a new game in The Witcher series since the release of CD PROJEKT RED’s previous single-player, AAA RPG in the franchise — The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — which won a total of 250 Game of the Year awards and was later expanded upon with the Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine add-ons. The teaser image for the new game features a medallion, accompanied by the phrase A New Saga Begins. Beyond this initial confirmation of a new saga in The Witcher franchise, no further details — such as a development time frame or release date — were provided. CD PROJEKT RED also announced that they will be moving to Unreal Engine 5 as part of the multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games. Since The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, released in 2011, CD PROJEKT RED has used their proprietary REDengine technology to build their games. This new relationship with Epic covers not only licensing, but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine, where relevant. Developers from CD PROJEKT RED will collaborate with those from Epic with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences, beginning with the development of the next game in The Witcher franchise. Speaking on the use of Unreal Engine 5 for this, and future games, CTO of CD PROJEKT RED, Paweł Zawodny stated: “One of the core aspects of our internal RED 2.0 Transformation is a much stronger focus on technology, and our cooperation with Epic Games is based on this principle. From the outset, we did not consider a typical licensing arrangement; both we and Epic see this as a long-term, fulfilling tech partnership. It is vital for CD PROJEKT RED to have the technical direction of our next game decided from the earliest possible phase as; in the past, we spent a lot of resources and energy to evolve and adapt REDengine with every subsequent game release. This cooperation is so exciting, because it will elevate development predictability and efficiency, while simultaneously granting us access to cutting-edge game development tools. I can’t wait for the great games we’re going to create using Unreal Engine 5!” Tim Sweeney, Founder and CEO of Epic Games, remarked about the partnership: “Epic has been building Unreal Engine 5 to enable teams to create dynamic open worlds at an unprecedented scale and level of fidelity. We are deeply honored by the opportunity to partner with CD PROJEKT RED to push the limits of interactive storytelling and gameplay together, and this effort will benefit the developer community for years to come.” Simultaneously with these announcements, CD PROJEKT RED also provided confirmation that REDengine, the technology which powers Cyberpunk 2077, is still being used for the development of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion.

Kind of excited since I liked TW2 and TW3, but I wonder how many years this will be down the road?
Interesting they are switching to Unreal Engine 5 like Mass Effect Next.
I'd love if we can actually create our own character rather than being stuck as a pre-defined character but I kind of doubt they will do that. Still, one of my favorite recent series.

Kind of excited since I liked TW2 and TW3, but I wonder how many years this will be down the road? I'm less concerned about how long it will take and more interested in 'have lessons been learned from CP2077's development and release'? Interesting they are switching to Unreal Engine 5 like Mass Effect Next. Yeah...that's...weird, right? I thought one of the main, indelible benefits of having your own, in house engine was avoiding - apparently - expensive licensing fees. It's not like RED was a dog, after all. It made beautiful games with complex systems. Not saying that it was necessarily better than Unreal (because I don't know either way), but it can't have been so much worse that they were so desperate to get away from it that they were ready and happy to give a chunk of each sale to the engine developers, surely? Edit: actually, just read the message below the image. Licensing and technical deal, so they've obviously worked something out that smooths the cost aspect to the point that it's a non-issue. Perhaps Unreal upgrades more easily than RED?

RED engine is highly advanced but from every account I've read, it's difficult to work with. Also, every development debacle in that company stems from the fact they have to update the engine while creating the game. Hopefully that'll be alleviated by using Unreal.

I suppose there is a slight hint about the game's narrative, since that is clearly not a wolf medallion.

Jason Schreier @jasonschreierFascinating to see both CD Projekt (next Witcher) and BioWare (next Mass Effect) switch to Unreal Engine. Both companies have struggled with their own proprietary tech. Moving to Unreal may cost a lot but will also mean better documentation, more support, and easier recruiting Grim Jimmy G @jaisling9497Roughly speaking, in monetary terms, how much does it cost? Are we talking a few million per title, or tens of millions to get full and unlimited access to the engine. It seems a strange thing to price Jason Schreier @jasonschreierUnreal’s terms are public but “strategic partnership” here likely means CDPR got a special deal so idk - Oh, they undoubtedly have a sweetheart deal with Epic. The marketing value alone of having CDPR using the Unreal engine is... considerable.

Tognar @tena_reis The only thing I don’t like about this, is them making the game exclusive to Epic Store… at least for some time.
Marcin Momot @marcin360 We don't have such plans.
The Witcher @witchergame We are not planning on making the game exclusive to one storefront.

Radek @gamebowskiWhat we have NOT announced today: - A game called The Witcher 4. - A game exclusive to one storefront. It was our initial confirmation of a new saga in The Witcher franchise. Right now, we are not discussing any specifics in terms or story, characters, mechanics, or plot details. - They've said a number of times now that TW3 was to be the end of Geralt's saga. It'll be interesting to see who the "Cat" Witcher is. There are certainly a few ways they could go with this...

Ehhh. This is not a definitive answer, and frankly doesn't rule out some kind of Epic exclusive over Steam.

Of course no guarantee any of those are good. But nice to know after that I'll still have ME Next, the next Witcher, and ES6 to look forward to. Feels like next 5 or so years will be much more exciting than the last 5.

I see their failures with Cyberpunk made them go back to their cash cow. I can't say in a post Cyberpunk world I am especially keen on this but it will be something to look at and probably get if it looks good and if it comes down in price. Though most interesting thing is the cat's head and not the wol'fs head medallion.

Well until BioWare announces the change of a game engine I am going to keep with the thought of switching to Unreal 5 to be online wishful thinking regardless of who is saying it. Nothing I have seen from BioWare has indicated that it might not be just for their mobile or whatever addon to the main game. So anyone getting excited for Mass Effect just because of that I would keep my expectations low for it still might not be happening for all I have seen is job openings without a game attached and a vague statement about "keeping all options open".
Now with that said, I have no faith in CDPR for all of their major releases have struggled at release the first two Witcher games had an enhanced editions because of the state they launched it and the list of patch notes for The Witcher 3 is pretty massive as well (a lot of the same problems that Andromeda had at release) and then you have Cyberpunk 2077. Combined the majority of the staff that worked on The Witcher 3 no longer works at CDPR (since turnover seems to be a metric for a good game at BioWare) and none of the management has left the studio.
So something to keep on my radar, but I am keeping my expectations low and to understand I probably won't play the game for a year or two post release.

This stinks. The "problems" and "difficulties" with RedEngine have been with consoles. It is a PC gaming engine, by design.
They are doing this because their awesome engine was made for powerful hardware, and a console will simply never have that.
From a business standpoint, it is the smart decision. UE5 has to work on consoles, it was made to work on everything. Their shortsightedness resulted in some awesome games, but unfortunately they could not adapt their technology well enough and have now waved the white flag.
UE games can be modded, so there's that. If I didn't dislike Swiney so much, I'd be almost be happy about this. As it is, I find it a little disappointing/frustrating, but also not worth losing more sleep over than it took to write this post.

Cat School. Not Geralt's story. I'm interested.

Jog my memory; the School of the Cat was the one dismissively referred to as ‘little better than assassins for hire’….right? Spoilered for talyn82 who is playing for the first time… In the games there was Letho and the one from the quest in TW3 where the townsfolk tried to cheat him and he got angry (both those examples sort of track with the description). If that is the case, I wonder if we’ll be going back in time a ways, before the Cat School lost their mojo?

I mean to backtrack and piggyback off of something when CDPR tried to adapt and tack onto stories already written they didn't seem to do that well. The Wild Hunt was boring as feck. But when they did their own thing, Ladies of the Woods, Gaunter, Detlaff, it was the best bits of the Witcher. So yes, there is a chance this will be good from that perspective...whether they can actually work the tech this time is another matter entirely.

I mean basically Cat's are Witchers that are even outcasts amongst the Witchers. The lowest of the low. The most feared. The most isolated. It could really play up the whole 'we are monsters' angle if they make us play as a character who is despised even more then our already despised order.

That could totally work as well. They do seem to like having people spit on their player characters (figuratively and literally)
