Well, we're lost in the woods. Hey there is a guy over there wearing coveralls, a hockey goalie mask and revving a chain saw. Perhaps we should ask him for directions?

This is the skeleton of a story, and not what this thread is intended for.
But this thread made me come of mind of a story of non-survival that I once encountered.

There was this guy that made a chain of choices that eventually became his undoing. I've been thinking about it, wondering if there is something to learn.

There was a snow storm moving in. They could have stayed with their friends. No, out on the roads for the long trip home. They could have taken the long but big road, that was probably going to see more attention and traffic. No, lets not do that. When the going got tough, they could have stopped at a Motel they passed. No, It's night, but lets push on. Hey, that road up the mountain looks like a short cut on the map. They pass a fork with an unknown road, not marked on the map. The going was tough so he eventually decided to turn back. But hey there was that fork, lets try that. That road led nowhere and they couldn't go back because they couldn't get back up a slope.

Again and again he had come to a choice. Every time he knew that one of the roads led to safety. Every time he didn't knew where the other led. Every time he chose the other.
Why? Because every time he also figured the other might ?  be easier?

His final two choices weren't even particularly rational. He had, of course run out of gas in his snowed in car, and was thus freezing. So he decided to walk to fetch help. The problems with that is that it's always worse outside the car, and that he didn't have the shoes or clothes for it. Also, the tracks of the car were well visible in the snow, and people would start to be missing him.

The last choice he made was totally in tune with all the other choices he had made: He decided to stop following the road back, and yet once again take a "short cut" straight through the woods instead. Disregarding the fact that he didn't even have a compass, there's also a reason roads between A and B run where they do. It's the easiest path. He had maybe 8-12 hours walk back to the main road, which would probably be hard for him to make in his office shoes. But the "short cut" would have taken a week, provided he had compass, food, proper boots, clothes and bivouac gear.

The rescue helicopter that followed the wheel tracks of his car, would have seen him on the road. They saw his foot prints turn and trace out into the wilderness, but they couldn't follow his tracks in the woods. They saved his wife and child that he had left in the car, but as far as I know, his body was never found.

The reason this story stays with me and bugs me, is the chain of his choices. There's some kind of nightmare there. What was in his mind? Feeling? Hunch? Intuition? Trust your impulses? Where did the feeling of safety come from? The conviction of that it would be alright in the end?

When you're in serious circumstances, you need to be serious yourself. Use your head and not shit you learned from Hollywood movies. Take the safe bet when it's still available and before things get out of hand.
