In our timeline space themed sci fi had a hard time with TV in the 2010s.
What would a world where a TV show with space travel became at least half as mainstream as heavy hitters like "Game of Thrones" or "The Walking Dead" during the 2010-2015 time period be like?
I imagine it would where humanity had most of it's act together. A world where humanity was on track to landing Humans on Mars by 2020.
In this alternate would would "Game of Thrones", "MCU", and "The Walking Dead" become as big as they became?
Is a perfect world where "Game of Thrones", "MCU", and "The Walking Dead" become pop culture phenomenons while still having a space show break into the mainstream possible?
Would the show be space opera?
Or something more realistic and "near future"?
Or a mix of both? It starts with space race between the US/EU/Japan/Aus/NZ/Canada vs China/Russia then they find a portal at the end of the solar system that connects our solar system with the Milky Way causing the show to become a space opera.

Imagine a world where George R R Martin writes an epic science fiction series. It actually isn't all; that hard. Martin has written sf with a series of short stories about a much taller Mary Sueish version pf GRRM named Haviland Tuf. So Martin expands his sf series and foregoes his fantasy. The series gets picked up by HBO and enjoys great popularity and then hits a speed bump after five years because Martin can't bring himself to finish the damn story. Whereupon the name George R R Martin becomes anathema to a whole generation of sf fans and no one wants to see his beard, his hat or his suspenders ever again. So the whole alternative future would be entirely unlike our current one, where George R R Martin wrote but hasn't finished a fantasy series.

Sci-Fi is both expensive to make and niche, also dominated by several giant franchises. Which means its a very ungrateful job to make new series/movie.
