Well, it always depends. When the LotR movies came out, I was irritated by some of the changes that Peter Jackson's team made. But when I watched all the behind the scenes stuff that came with the extended version DVDs, they did a pretty good job of explaining pretty much every change that they made and while I don't necessarily agree with all of them, I can now understand the reasons for all of them. Sometimes it's just casting or production and timing issues. But in general, I do think producers, writers and directors of these adaptations do spend a great deal of time deliberating such changes. I doubt many of them are just done on a whim or just for the sake of standing out. At least not purely for that reason. The problem with a completely faithful adaptation of any work is that sometimes certain characters cannot be translated.
In Lord of the Rings, the prime example is Tom Bombadil, who appears very earlier in Fellowship, saving the Hobbits shortly after they leave the Shire. The problem with his character is that he seems to waltz in out of nowhere as if he was cut-and-pasted from a completely different story altogether (which he was), while being too overpowered for his own good, easily defeating powerful Wights with ease and later negating the powers/influence of the Ring entirely.
I agree with Peter Jackson that it was far easier in that instance, to simply omit him entirely from the film and have the Hobbits skip straight to Bree. It was easier than trying to figure some way that they could include him without completely breaking the narrative, as well as leaving audience members scratching their heads for the rest of the film's runtime, wondering why Frodo even needed to be the Ringbearer?
I can understand the Tom Bombadil cut as you have described, for me though the changes in The Expanse I just couldn't fathom other than "maybe" to reduce running time. I need to see if I can find out why they made the changes, the character in series 3 I was mainly referring to in book 3 is "Bull" plus a side character whose name eludes me but she was Fred Johnsons main mechanic/engineer who worked on The Rocinante and had a really strong relationship with Naomi and Holden to a lesser extent.

So found this article re The Expanse series 3 and the changes, I get why they did it but I don't think it worked as well as the book:

Haven't read the books yet and probably never will now that my buddy is reading, who's saying they are terribly written. Hack writer, he calls the author. Conversations between the crew like 12-year olds. Worse than some fanfiction. From the tidbist he sent me I would agree. Jeez, that was bad... Hahaha. He did say the crew was less angsty and more along the lines of the Normandy crew, though. No rivalry and trust issues. Also, Holden in the books is more likeable.
Anyway, so is this going to be like Stargate?
I'm conflicted about the narrative cut that seems to await us with going to new worlds. I hope the big question about what the proto molecule wants doesn't get pushed into the background in favor of colony drama. That freaky alien goo is the most interesting aspect of the show to me.
I suppose they'll find super advanced alien tech of a long lost race who's connected to the proto molecule.
I hope we'll see a lot of ghost Miller. Reminds me ever so slightly of Farscape with Scorpy in John's head. Except it was WAY cooler and creepier in Farscape and John was an infinitely better character than sulky face Holden. (One of the most original most fucked up ideas on TV if you ask me.) I still dislike Holden. Such an annoying bland MAIN character!?
PS: Anybody else think Bobbie is Shepard in the making? Didn't like her much at first. Thought she'd be a throw-away character. Boy,was I wrong. Went from naive straight arrow Ashley Williams to badass Shepard. Very cool!

Going by the book series, this particular arc is going to be "colony drama" But it's part of a much, much larger story about the "alien goo" Heck they already found advanced tech from a long lost race connected to the protomolecule in the Slow Zone If anything, Bobbie is even more bad*ss in the books. Arguably more so even than Amos. She's by far my favorite character.

I disliked Amos at first. He was waaay over the top aggressive. Very quick to shoot. But he's got quite a nice arc. I love how he keeps saving everybody's asses and has a oft spot for good people. I like this paradox of his character. Ever since my Dexter fangirl days I like the psychopath with a heart trope.
My favorite main crew character is Alex. He's like Joker... if Joker didn't... joke, lol... I can relate to his quiet obsessive personality the best.^^ The guy just wants to fly. Would totally have sex with the ship if he could too. Very likeable character. Not a fighter, has no authority and gets his ass kicked when he tries to lend a muscle, but he's heroic in his own way.
My favorite non crew character is Camina. I also like the old gruff ex-pirate Ashford. They have a interesting dynamic, those two. I was VERY surprised they both survived!
I "like" Avasarala a lot as a character. She's queen bitch but I like her ambivalent motives. Never quite sure if she's a villain or a hero.
Very curious where Bobbie's story leads. Now that her youthful naivety got slapped out of her, she's becoming a very interesting character!

Great trailer, I thought the environs on the planet and some of the things that happened reminded me of what happened in the book and especially Amos's interaction with Murtry!!!!!. The jarring thing for me is Naomi's presence. IIRC she never goes planet side until maybe the end, she has a whole different story arc with Miller's partner in space doesn't she???

I totally disagree with your friends comments re the books TBH, IMO they couldn't further from the truth. It's not meant to be "Hardcore Sc-Fi" but its military Sci-Fi that pays attention to Physics and I think the various story arc's are well written and intertwine really well and as Iakus says it plays out over a whole 8 books. This series is based on book 4 and this colony development and is my favourite of all the books so I hope that plays out to your expectations. Alex really grows on you and reading his Origin story really rounds him out, Alex though is good but he doesn't really remind me of Joker. I really like his mismatched friendship with Alex and how it plays out over the books and the proto-molecule is the glue that binds it all together.

]I disliked Amos at first. He was waaay over the top aggressive. Very quick to shoot. But he's got quite a nice arc. I love how he keeps saving everybody's asses and has a oft spot for good people. I like this paradox of his character. Ever since my Dexter fangirl days I like the psychopath with a heart trope. Same here, first season I disliked Amos very much, he felt like Naomi's deranged lapdog with aggression problems, or simply the typical 2-dimensional grunt meathead with a sister complex. But that was probably intentional. Eventually the show made me discover more and more layers to his personality, and end of season 2 I started to really like him. Thing is, I'm always absolutely ok with nearly all of his actions, even those the rest of the crow does not agree with. The only time I disliked Amos a LOT was when he punched my favorite character of the show, Miller. In that scene I hoped he would slip and bust his skull wide open. Funny thing is, I've never really liked Thomas Jane, the actor playing Miller, in any films I have ever seen, but he is totally rocking it in The Expanse, like night and day. I wonder how many of the actors I do not like or I do not find very impressive would totally shine in better roles. Kind of a sad thought. But don't we all just need that one special chance to shine?

stoked for season 4. Haven't read the books yet, might will do one day, but only after the TV series ended. I do plan to read on the comics/novels or whatever they released a while back, especially the Amos one. Like a poster above, hope it's less colony drama, more protomolecule focused. Wonder what story line Bobbi will have, since based on the trailers she isn't on the planet. Bobbi and Amos are my favorites, like Alex too, but could easily do without Holden and Naomi on the Crew

Maybe they will mash some other stuff that runs parallel and that was what was being shown.

My wife wanted to surprise my kids with a rescue dog for Christmas but to get it beforehand, I suggested we wait till after Xmas as I knew it would be as usual left to me to take responsibility for it and I may have just have been thinking about not having it interrupt my binge watching of The Expanse and maybe The Witcher!!!!

Priorities are important in life! I'll have 2 weeks off over the holidays and will need them dearly to get the little guy adjusted. He spent his entire life in a Romanian mass shelter. He entered a house for the first time a month ago. He's currently in foster care in Germany until we're ready for him. He has to learn EVERYTHING like a puppy. This is going to be a challenge. Our first dog was a senior and didn't need to learn anything new really. He was super well behaved and very quiet and submissive. The new one is much younger and will try to get away with as much as he can.
Good luck with your new family member too!

Oh well. That sounds cool, can I go watch at your house? I barely have a living room myself (if we can call it living room at all). JK, realistically I like to watch movies or tv shows on my own and alone. Don't want anybody making sounds or interrupting, nor to be biased towards the thing being good or bad because the other person is also watching. My parents also recently got a dog from the streets, I actually suggested them to do so a while back. It's one that's always been around and they already fed and whatnot. When I went to check out on them a few weeks ago the dog was already living there, didn't like me very much though. And I'm like bitch I vouched for you! Whatever, at least the other doggos do like me.

Priorities are always important!!!!! I remember only too well our last puppy, he was a nightmare the first few days and nights, harder work than our two kids were when they were born. We are going to try for as young as possible, our last dog passed away a year or so ago so we don't want to get an older one in case something happens, don't want the kids to go through that again. Thanks you, you too.
