I just wanted to tie myself to this topic and say this is a goddamn awesome show. I don't think I'll be discussing after a while since I'm in the middle of Season 2... but boy, what a goddamn amazing show this is. What the fuck was the Picard show even doing ? I don't care anymore ! Best Sci Fi books (other than the classics) and show I have watched I think. Be good to watch the show without having read the books as there are some changes, not necessarily for the worse but I'd highly recommend reading the book related to each series of the show afterwards. Or just read the first 4 after watching the first 4 seasons.

I must have watched too much expanse stuff on youtube because it keeps suggesting things to me now. Usually I just ignore it but I came across this panel organized by Caltech. It's super long and fairly old (before season 2, so no spoilers in there) but it's probably the most insightful panel I have ever seen on a scifi setting. If you have 1 1/2 hours to kill, watch it or listen to it on the side.
In the context of the latest news about Cas, his comment at around 1:14:35 certainly seem ... interesting?

Alright, I finally finished book 8 of the Expanse. I was shocked ... but only because I thought book 8 was supposed to be the last Expanse book. Fortunately, according to the wiki, book 9 is planned and that is good because otherwise I would have been mad as hell. Some overall impressions (obvious spoiler warning is obvious): So book 7 was really cool I thought, the whole "overwhelming power, takes over the known universe" thing and putting our heroes into the role of basically guerilla fighters and terrorists was definitely shocking and kept my adrenaline high throughout. The pace on that was pretty fast, too. While the new and broader view on the new political situation in book 8 was kinda interesting, I felt it dragged out a little there (maybe that's also because I didn't get to read it as quickly as the rest of the books and thus it was just more drawn out for me that way, not sure). The fact that most of our protagonists are somewhat pinned down doesn't help. Holden is a prisoner, Naomi is kinda stuck in places most of the time, Alex and Bobby can't really do much until they can and Amos is literally sitting in a cave. It all comes together nicely in the end but it does take out the dynamic nature of the older books a little. There is very little agency for our heroes (or also the characters we follow, like Teresa and Elvi). I guess that's kind of the point and there is some payoff from this when first Alex and Bobby and then finally Naomi become free to act and all hell breaks loose. But still, it did take me quite some effort to get to that point. So if I have a complaint about that book, this would be it. Everything else is done superbly as we are used to from the series. The alien force is again handled really really well, just foreign enough not to be understood but with enough impact to creep the shit out of me. I am really curious how they'll resolve that arc in the next book. The aliens are also why we desperately need a book 9, I mean, this book quite literally ends with the main character saying "They want to kill us all" (though I am still not certain that's actually the case, hell, we don't even know for sure that this is a true lifeform yet, IMO, the tid for tad experiment didn't prove anything for shit and was completely overinterpreted, no matter what Ilich said, I think even Elvi also hints at this). As for character fates, I know people here in the thread are very upset with Bobby's end (especially Iakus ). Frankly, I have to wonder why? As far as I am concerned, she got the perfect ending. Going out like a fricking Valkyrie, singlehandedly throwing an antimatter bomb at the totally overpowered warship of the enemy and then firing her cannons at it until she is vaporized in a blaze of glory ... what more could you ask for? And seriously, you didn't really think she was going to live to a happy old age, did you? Come on people, this was very appropriate for the character. I was more weirded out by Amos. I mean, if there is one person in this universe who would just shrug off being resurrected by protomolecule machines, it's Amos but still, this is a bit fucked up. I am curious what role he'll have to play in the last book. I doubt he'll be around till the end either though. As for Holden, him getting back to the Roci was a genuinely nice moment (almost a little too short and downplayed in the book IMO). Now that the old band is back together, I wonder how the dynamics might change in the future. I mean, yes, it is implied that Naomi is kinda eager to give up her leadership role but I don't think she can (or will really). Basically, it might work out as Holden being back in charge of the Roci but with Naomi being the boss of the broader political movement and making more strategic decisions. Anyway, all in all, while I wouldn't call book 8 among my favorites in the series, it certainly was very momentous and had a lot of huge developments going on. Can't wait to see what will now happen with that subatomic anti-life force thing and how they series will come to a close. ... And I really hope they'll be able to make the tv show long enough to cover all the books.

I was sad about her fate, but I generally agree it was the perfect way for her to go out. I think I'm more bummed that she and Alex never got together. Though I am glad they had such a tight friendship.

Yea, there was definitely something that could have evolved into a romance between Alex and Bobby there for a while in the middle of the series but I think by book 8 it was pretty much gone already and I kinda sometimes like it when a romance doesn't quite materialize. So I think I would have been ok with it either way.

I thought Bobbie and Alex complemented each other well. While Alex has a rather checkered past, he's probably the most "normal" of the Roci crew.

Oh, forgot to say, one thing I did not like so much in the book was the final space battle. Usually space battle always were highlights for me in this series because they always had some kind of a twist or surprising maneuver or something in it and usually all the different sides in each battle acted very intelligently (or at least the authors described it in a way so that everything everyone was doing seemed to make a lot of sense). But here, Lakonia just came across as super incompetent. I mean, the rebels go up against the home world of the galactic empire and their most important assets by far with 4 ships, three of which are cobbled together somehow to have weapons and one is a small gunship that is 4 decades out of date. First, the Lakonians fall for the oldest trick in the book and send their big ship away, apparently leaving the planet's defenses entirely up to some weapons platforms in orbit and some completely useless ground based weaponry without any mobile units in place. Then, those 4 ships come in and manage to dodge whatever those platforms can throw at them. Why doesn't Lakonia have just overwhelming defenses in place? They should be able to shoot so many rail guns at the Roci that she just can't dodge. I mean, this is their capital for gods sake. Then, the Roci can even slow down to land and take off and it doesn't even matter. That really was just stupid on the Lakonian's part.

And I really hope they'll be able to make the tv show long enough to cover all the books. Hopefully book 9 will come out later this year or early next year, the authors have said, my take on their words that they are just making sure the book is everything it can be and that there are no narrative issues etc. I thought Bobbies exit was a perfect way for her to go out in terms of shoe she was and her character/personality. I liked how it was always suggested that her and Alex would get together but was glad that the authors didn't take the easy option. I didn't mind the slower pace on Laconia and the political machinations, it is a better rea for that part or it was for me second time around as I knew to read more into the nuances of what Holden was doing etc. Re the space battle, yeah it was all a little bit too easy but it was well planned not just strategically but based on the flaws of the Laconian mindset and key people and sometimes well planned battles/sports games etc. against a hard opposition do work almost perfectly. I get he feeling from the books that the new Laconian ships must take a long time to build and that is why there weren't more and remember they kicked off the galaxy conquest earlier than planned because of the discovery about the effect on the gates of the Tempest (?) weapon by the Laconian guy running The Space station/Ex-Nauvoo/Ex-Behemoth in the dead zone or whatever it's called and had a false sense of superiority because of that as well. Sorry it's early morning my memory is struggling. Re Amos, well given his repressed emotional state who else would be a better candidate for acting as a bridge to the dead alien/hive mind race and accessing their info in the diamond and dealing with the Phantom Menace race!!!!!! That's what I am going with anyway.

Season 5 is filmed as far as I know and if not finished, far along with the post production effects and stuff. There is going to be a comic mini series to bridge season 4 and 5 that is supposed to come out starting in December. Source: www.gizmodo.com.au/2020/09/the-expanses-world-is-getting-bigger-in-a-new-comic-from-boom-studios/The lack of news regarding Season 6 renewal and production is not only down to the corona pandemic, but also the multiple assault/sexual harassment investigations into Cas Anvar (Alex, the Martian Rocinante pilot). My guess we'll get to see Season 5 in early 2021. I'm optimistic that production will be able to start on season 6, despite the pandemic, once the Cas Anwar investigations have been done and depending on the outcome they have decided either to continue with Cas Anvar, recast his character Alex Camal or write him out and get somebody else to be the pilot.

I'm excited for the new season and my favorites Amos and Boobie.
Couldn't wait so spoiler-ed myself with summaries of the books. Going to be a much more thrilling season than last for sure.

I'm excited for the new season and my favorites Amos and Boobie. Couldn't wait so spoiler-ed myself with summaries of the books. Going to be a much more thrilling season than last for sure. Thanks for posting, was that intentional spelling mistake of Bobbies name!!!!! Also so excited they finally announced the release date and yes this series is going to rock big time!!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing only got to the trailer but it was fun to watch and the trailer was excellent, few too many spoilers in it though I thought but maybe that's just cause I have read the books. Will wtch the rest later..
