I actually think diplomatic Hawke and Isabella work better. Both of them being similar doesn't work as well as far as I'm concerned, and I like some of the dialogue better with diplomatic Hawke. (especially MoTA). Also, if I'm not mistaken, if you are diplomatic Hawke and you flirt with Tallis, doesn't Isabella say something nice about Hawke. I think this applies if Hawke is male.
Basically, I think diplomatic male Hawke works best with Isabella because she does have a negative opinion of men in general. It reminds me a bit of paragon Jack romance in Mass Effect.

I feel like she has a fun birds-of-a-feather whirlwind romance with snarky Hawke (but I also really like snarky Hawke juxtaposed with Fenris's brooding calm). I also really like Isabela with aggressive/blunt Hawke. I can see the appeal of the diplo option, but I've never been a big fan of moralizing and "saving" the femme fatale from herself which is what that dynamic ends up feeling like to me.

That was pretty much my Warden and Morrigan's dynamic. As for blue Hawke x Isabela, I kinda agree with you. Becoming less selfish obviously is a positive character development, but rogues aren't meant to be goody two shoes. We love them BECAUSE they are morally gray.

Isabela's ethnicity is a funny thing. In the game she is a ambiguous brown, like a mixed person or how Indians are.
In the comics, she is clearly black.

Is it considered canon that Isabela helps out the Inquisition in DAI or is that just a multiplayer component?

Is it considered canon that Isabela helps out the Inquisition in DAI or is that just a multiplayer component? I'm gonna go with canon, just because some of the MP characters show up around Skyhold sometimes. And I like the idea of Hawke and Isabela running into each other at some point, each aiding the Inquisition in their own way. Plus she gets MULTIPLE OUTFITS after a decade of wearing the same damn thing! Makes me so happy! That works with my head canon that she finished up whatever errand she was on and followed Hawke to Skyhold. Once there she ran a few missions to pass the time while Varric and Hawke were out with the Inquisitor. I am trying to reconcile where Hawke was when Isabela and Varric were helping Alstair in the comics. I don't recall it being explained in the comics how Sebastian returned to Starkhaven so maybe Hawke was with him at the time. I could see the Hawkes helping him establish a foothold, and in return Sebastian provides Bethany a refuge from the templars and the war since they are sweet on each other. I am currently working on nailing down my canon play throughs of DAO through DAI, and planned on romancing Merrill since she was a part of my Warden's story, but two things are stopping me. The first is the way Hawke has a vehement dislike of blood magic in DAI, which makes sense given how his mother died so I don't see him being ok with his lover being a blood mage. The second is Isabela is like a siren for my Hawke(s) and I always end up romancing her whenever I play DA2.

I feel like Isabela is snarky Hawke's natural romance. Nah. I feel like Fenris needs Snarky Hawke more. It's the only way to get him to smile. There is more than one way to make Isabella smile

I know she does on the Rivalry path, but I can't remember if she does on the Friendship path?
I hate how they ruined my Hawke with this. To be fair though, Hawke already was shown multiple times to hate blood magic in DA2.
It's why having that spec made zero to have, as the story repeatedly makes Hawke seem like a hypocrite if they picked it.
(The only way I can headcanon picking Blood Mage is that Hawke technically had to use blood magic to break the seals binding Corypheus)

No, she doesn’t renounce blood magic on the Friendship path. My Hawke showed no such thing. They agreed with Merrill that like with all magic it isn’t what it is that makes it good or evil but how it is used.

Which is so weird, considering the devs confirmed that trailer!Hawke is a blood mage... 🤔 It also confirmed that mages were pretty good at melee combat... edit: And confirmed Isabela as the love interest... As with most cgi trailers its marketing giving way to actual story and game play. I really wish DA2 mages had a melee spec so mage Hawke made more sense from a narrative perspective.

It confirmed Isabela as a love interest, but I don't think it makes her "the" love interest. And I feel like Hawke was the most melee mage-ish of all? Besides Arcane Warrior and KE, which are like... ancient-elf-based specializations, mage Hawke still whacks people with their staff and slices them with their staff blade when they get close.

Isabela was what I like to call the poster romance of DA2, which is the LI they use in marketing.

My Hawke showed no such thing. They agreed with Merrill that like with all magic it isn’t what it is that makes it good or evil but how it is used. Hawke disliking blood magic shows up several times in automatic dialogue, such as the investigative options from Enemies Among Us.
Hawke: What foul magic was that? Idunna: Blood and desire in equal measure, an art I learned from... elsewhere. Hawke: *Seething* Blood magic then. Idunna: Yes mesere. Please don't kill me. Hawke: You're going to answer all of my questions and if there's even a hint of magic.
Even if you played Hawke as a blood mage, there are still tons of dialogue options littered across the game that allow Hawke to make fun of blood mages, show disdain for blood magic in general and treat anyone who makes deals with demons as being dangerously irresponsible, if not downright insane. All those options seems to suggest that Hawke's character was often written as being someone who opposes blood magic, which fits the contempt they show for it in Inquisition.

If the Inquisitor returns with a prosthetic arm, they need to have this as an inbuilt weapon. Dagna, get to work! It confirmed Isabela as a love interest, but I don't think it makes her "the" love interest. And I feel like Hawke was the most melee mage-ish of all? Besides Arcane Warrior and KE, which are like... ancient-elf-based specializations, mage Hawke still whacks people with their staff and slices them with their staff blade when they get close.Maybe the canon explanation for how mage Hawke and the other party mages were able to remain undetected, as well as fight in situations where Templars were present, was that they pretended to be a melee fighters using quarterstaff/glaives? Perhaps when Templars were around, they had to fight conventionally without using magic, so as to not tip them off?

Sifr That was always my explanation. Glaives and staves and spears are a thing, apostates just pretend they have one of those. Or a walking stick.
