The First Law was a good series. Bayaz is definitely annoying.
Unfortunately, nothing is coming to mind in terms of Mass Effect style SF books. Tricky...

Ever read Hyperion by Dan Simmons? Only part of the way through it myself and it is in some ways like ME.

In the mood for a sci-fi atm I think, anyone know anything Mass Effect-ish? The Berserker series by Fred Saberhagen? It's a series of short stories and novels written from the '60s to early 2000's about humanity fighting against doomsday weapons left over from a war between precursor aliens which wiped out both sides and have since been scouring the galaxy of all organic life. I'd bet money Mass Effect was at least in part inspired by it. For the more "space marine" type book, there's also the Legacy of the Aldenata series by John Ringo, starting with "A Hymn Before Battle" basically, a "Council" of four peaceful aliens come to Earth to warn them of a fifth species marauding its way across the galaxy, and Earth will soon be hit by them. And since humanity is so much better at waging war than they are, they'll provide the tech if humans provide the soldiers to fight their wars...hilarity ensues.

I started reading "Mistborn-the final Empire" by Brandon Sanderson. Neat! I've heard interesting things about that series. I just refuse to read anything before alloy of law. Are you on the 17th shard forums? Well, IMO Mistborn is better than Alloy of Law. Particularly the first book, The Final Empire, which I think is really, really good. Unfortunately, the trilogy deteriorates somewhat through the later volumes. Still worth reading of course, not the least because of the first. I kinda see the same pattern in Alloy of Law. Only worse. Unfortunately I think the last book I read there, 'Bands of Mourning', I found pretty sloppy and immersion breaking nonsensical. Sanderson sometimes slides down some slippery slope where there's a lot of inflation in magic and meaningless action. I hope he doesn't do that to his 'Stormlight Archives' which have been absolutely brilliant sofar.

Slowly working my way through Terry Pratchett's Discworld series and Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere books. At the moment that means Maskerade for Discworld and Words of Radiance for Cosmere.

I finished 'Poor Folk' by Dostoevsky which was different in style most of the novel being letters back and forth between two people and am now reading this one. I 'think' this is an unfinished novel so though early on in it I expect it just to stop at some point.

I've been reading my way through the Hercule Poirot books of Agatha Christie. They're short, easy reads and it's fun to see if I can pick on the weird little clues sprinkled throughout the novel before the inevitable explanation at the end. The change in current values across the series has been interesting, with the beginning being so Victorian and then in the 30s and leading up to World War II we're getting a lot of love affairs and divorce. Ms. Christie doesn't seem to think much of people in general, which leads to some entertaining commentary from her characters about one another. Every "type" is in for a roasting along the way.

I have so many feels for ventris from this book. I kinda want to give her a hug and tell her it'll all be alright. Even though I know her character would kill me for even aproaching her. Seriously though. I haven't finished the novel yet, but I'm just about done with it. She just took vas back, after he quits the order. And I recognized the old saying of 'just a few more, then I'm done with it' feel of his sentence during that conversation. and I already know she dies to dooku so I'm pretty sure I see vas' betrayal coming. Even still, I'm rooting for her character so hard right now. But if he does, I really want her to kill him. And make him die in a way, that he dies drowning in his own screeams. I have 2 hours left to go, and I might just finish the novel tonight.

DISHONORED
The Corroded Man
Takes place between Dishonored 1 and 2. It's alright. The main antagonist is by far the mist interesting character. The heroes are kinda boring.

I finished my last Dostoevsky book 'Netochka Nezvanova' as I thought it was his unfinished book and it just suddenly ended with no resolution to the story. He had a good excuse though since he was tossed into a gulag in Siberia for about 4 years and almost executed. The books premise had some merit but I wanted to punch the main character numerous times for their actions. I have just started reading this one which so far seems to be promising after a few chapters.

Did a Michael Crichton two-fer: Prey A thriller about renegade nanobot networked intelligent swarms running wild in the Nevada desert. Starts off as a slow soap opera about an out-of-work programmer, stay-at-home dad suspicious of the high powered executive wife's late nights at the office, then gets interesting as weird shit keeps happening and he gets called back to his old job, then goes a bit off the rails for the finale. Absurd, but still a page-turner. Dragon Teeth Fun story about the true-to-life dangerous competition between two paleontologists, Marsh and Cope, in the wild west at the dawn of the discovery of dinosaur fossils, through the lens of a fictitious character that interacts with both. The first half is interesting, but the 2nd quickly becomes ridiculous (but still fun).

Finished Altered Carbon on audible. It pushes the notion of future tech to fantasy levels, but still very good as a noir, cyberpunk thriller.

yea, I just finished it last weeek. I can't belive she was killed off like that. that seemed like such a weak ending for such an amazing character. and duku still got away?! he was in a bunker, sourounded by clones, under the gaurd of 2 jedi masters. wtf!? all in all, it was a great ride. I would recommend the book to anyone who likes atris as a character [/quote]
