Phillip K Dick is one of the weirdest writers I have ever encountered!!!!! I haven't seen "Clans of Alphane" but I have read six of his other novels and whilst I'd say I like them I am not sure I understood any of them, they are just really weird !!!!! To be honest, this was already the second time I'm reading these, makes really a difference. First time is almost always "wtf.. wtf.. WHAT? Okay, now I kinda understand" until comes another "wtf!?" - He definately has his own unique style, and always having women without top on going around in the books Yes, they are weird and thought-provoking plus they are sci-fi where the future isnt usually much explained, leaving much for the imagination. That is a perfect summary!!!!!!! I haven't read any of them for at least 5 years and certainly while reading it there are many times that WTF is exactly how you feel but I think a lot of it is he is great at hiding where the plot is actually going. And then as you said something happens and you are OK I get it and then bang he comes out of left field again and you are again going WTF???? I can't remember a lot of it but have you read "Martian Time-Slip"? That was one of his that lost me pretty much from start to end. He is definitely is not your vanilla science fiction writer and man he was prolific in his writing.

The thing is, thats over 10 years ago, and as I got all of them now in epub format I can read them while on the go from computer or phone. You are right, he is great at hiding where the plot is actually going! Sometimes this manifests in a bit of a bore or filler kinda text, but it is not skippable usually or "fast readable". Martian is coming up later in the list

And entire chapters devoted to what colour and style dress the female chars are wearing That aside it is a good series, especially the debut. I will conquer it one day.
I've read all but the last 2, the ones that Sanderson wrote. I'm torn between wanting to just finish it off or re-starting from the beginning since I've forgotten 90% of what happened. The first 5 books move along pretty well, but then things really start to drag. It does pick up again but those middle few installments are hundreds of pages of not a lot happening.
While I want to know how it all ends, I find I don't much like most of the characters so it's hard to care about what their fate might be. Yea, I'm the same way. I remember some big events from further in the series, but nothing substantial. Thats why I'm going through the series via audio book. And why I'm going to take a break after I'm done with this first book. Personally, I hate how the women are written. They come across as just...bullies. Personally, I'm still in the first book, in the first big city (just after the town), and I want to smack the village healer character so hard, it un-braids her hair. I also hate how the men are all written as mentally disabled. 'hey lets go explore this giant city on our own! Don't worry about the obvious warnings of danger from the folks who know more then we ever will'. Maybe sanderson is able to write these books better, but Mr. Jordan treated everyone like complete morons.

Just started reading yet another Neil Gailman book (he's my literary hero ) "The Monarch of The Glen" and no it has nothing to do with the TV show www.goodreads.com/book/show/18245822-the-monarch-of-the-glenNeil Gaiman is the first person I'd invite to a dinner party if I could, his writing hits the mark for me every time. I have had the pleasure of going to one of his "performances" for lack of a better word where he reads from one of is current releases, answers questions, usually has a string quartet on stage with him and if you are lucky he may even sing. I was lucky at the Sydney one and lets just say he's lucky he's a great author, cause he ain't no singer

Average zombie story that I haven't read in a while. Was reorganizing my bookshelf when I happened upon it. Its sequel, Apocalypse of the Dead, isn't too bad either if my memory serves me correctly.

So I did get down and get the next HH afterall. Honor of the Queen did end up being very good at the end, highly recommend it, the end battle between Fearless and Saladin was...well honestly it was some of the most page turning stuff that I have read in a while...and i read it before. Plus the scene with Nimitiz chewing through the Assassins was top notch stuff. So Short Victorious War...is short...for a novel. At around 348 pages or so it is actually pretty short for a novel. Which seems odd because it seems like a lot of the plot is happening away from HH. Also in general comparing HH to the other HH, Horatio Hornblower. Most of the plot revolved around Hornblower we rarely, if ever, saw anything from any of the other characters. And two...I mean there were what? 13 Hornblower novels? And there are soon to be 14 mainline Harrington novels? Just Harrington didn't start off as a Midshipman in her first novel, she was already a Commander. So her career arc must be...very steep. Not that I am complaining per se because I get it (and I kind of would have preffered her to remain a CO longer, I think)... it just is interesting that she started off in charge, would have been interesting to see her early career...though we do in some of the other stuff Webber has written.

Just finished "Persepolis Rising" (Expanse Book 7) by James S.A. Corey I had almost gotten enough of The Expanse but this one recaptured my interest. Unexpected developments, new antagonists. The end of the book promises something *really* interesting coming. Waiting for book 8 will be painful. Some thoughts about things that happened...(beware spoilers) Too bad what happened with Clarissa. Died just as she became more than a fifth wheel on the cart.
Also, with the last sentence of the book I came to like Duarte. In some way he's similar to many of history's visionaries who thought they could unite humanity without actually oppressing anyone, that people would eventually come around to see things their way, but man, he's audacious. I'd probably follow him if I lived in that world at that time, authoritarian or not. Also, the Laconians are written in a way that it's possible they won't remain the bad guys for long. We'll see.
Also, I'm currently reading: "The Retreat of Western Liberalism" by Edward Luce. In his analysis of political trends, he tends to take an economic perspective, which is refreshing. The topic: how to prevent western civilization as it emerged and came to dominance in the 20th century from collapsing under the weight of some inevitable trends and its own ignorance of its own nature. I can't say much about it yet since I'm just in the third chapter, but I've already found some interesting insights.

The Warp is perfectly safe, its creators claimed.
After the events which took place one year before, the last thing Tori Adams wanted was to go back into The Warp. She enjoyed college and the challenges it brought. She had no desire to set foot into the virtual reality realm ever again. Life moved on, and The Warp changed for the better as improvements were made.
The Nexus was a new login realm that allowed for gamers to avoid being stuck in-game for too long. The alpha testing had gone fine, but when the open beta testing began for the Nexus, it turned on—and stayed on. Nobody could explain it, and WarpSoft did everything in their power to shut it down. Unable to investigate from without, they asked Tori to go back in to find out what was keeping the Nexus online. She’s convinced it’s nothing more than a computer glitch. WarpSoft agreed with her, but…
What if something—or someone—far more dangerous was behind it?
There was only one way to find out.

Blasted through Thief's Magic. Went out and bought with a gift certificate from my girl for Bolen Books. A lovely neat bookstore here, very funky eccentric stuff. Met Jack Whyte there on tour for "The Forest Laird" years ago too.

I'm going through books fast at the moment...
Just finished: Re-reading Peter F Hamilton's "Night's Dawn" Trilogy. This 3200-page monster has so much stuff in it that it fills your mind to the brim while you're reading it. I highly recommend it. Also, I like its world better than Hamilton's Commonwealth Universe in which most of his later books play out.
Just started: "The Tethered Mage" by Melissa Caruso. Looks like a fascinating debut novel set in a Venice-like fantasy empire. I already love the setting.
Just bought: "Grey Sister" by Mark Lawrence. Part 2 of the Ancestor's Tale, this is a sequel to "Red Sister" which I found utterly absorbing. I usually find Lawrence's stories hard to get into, mostly because I can't connect with his protagonists (applies both to the Broken Empire trilogy and to "The Red Queen's War", neither of which I've finished so far) and they feel as if the world's prevalent cold seeps out into my mind, but this one is different. The world is the same I think, but I can connect with the protagonist.

I really liked Demons but I think my fav is "The Idiot" Not sure, i really loved a lot crime & punishment, the idiot and house of the deads chronicles (whatever the title is in English), it built me sort of when i was becoming an adult. I loved Brother K later on (i remember chosing not to read it asap). I find it a bit more mature and better built than the first 2. I guess that was more me than dosto I read crime & P recently again and was a bit disapointed , so my fav now wld be the house of the dead chronicles. I should read the demons asap now, as i forgot about it too. But i guess i m not in love anymore The idiot is really a gem though, that character is one of the best ever built
