Is there only 1 TV series? There was one about ten years ago. Only lasted a single season. This is a trailer for the latest BOOK due out in July. And the NEXT book, which is coming in September!

The series looked OK from the video I saw, I like the actor that was chosen to play Harry but for the life of me cannot think what else he has been in. So did I see correctly that it is Book 20 that is coming out?

It's predicted that there will be 20(ish) "case file" books followed by an apocalyptic trilogy.

Aaagh that's what I am remembering from!!!! MY god, want to read them they look interesting but that's a lot of books!!!!!!! It's worth it. The first 2-3 books have some growing pains-type issues, but starting with book 3 (Grave Peril) it totally takes off. Now there's fifteen (soon to be 17) novels, two short story anthologies, and a bunch of comic books.

Kinda sounds like the Sword Of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. Many moons ago, I worked at Chapters and we couldn't keep those books on the shelf. Several years later, after leaving the bookstore then I found the TV series on youtube and watched every episode of the 2 seasons it aired. Quite enjoyed it. A few months after that, I went back and bought all the books...thinking There's gotta be something to this series! The books are extremely popular and I thoroughly enjoyed the TV series.
Well, it was a frakkin' chore to slug through the first book "Wizards First Rule"...I finished it but it took me over a year to read, so dry, dull, and I really didn't like the writing style. There were many times I didn't even want to finish it.
But people I know who have read the books, tell me "start at book 3, the first two are crap....the story really doesn't get good until #3. Start there." So I have been tempted to do that....But what also turns me off about the series is it should have ended a long time ago, with a book called The Omen Machine that was written, I think in 2011, somewhere around there. And (he, the author) swore this is the last book, I'm not writing any more. I'm gonna kill off the main characters and end the whole thing
4 books later....the main characters are still alive and breathing. It's now 2020 and he is still writing a series that should have ended by his own words sometime around 2011. It's like these books are the only things he is known for and he just can't let them go.....and I think enough is enough. I don't even acknowledge them anymore.
Anyways, that whole thing is why I have been reluctant to even look at those books that I have.
Has anyone else ready Terry Goodkind's "SWORD Of TRUTH" series? Can anyone please give me their honest reviews of the books and where I should start? Or if I should start?

So I have been tempted to do that I gave up on the series after book 4. I actually liked the first one the best but tired of all his characters being stupid and his obvious misogyny. Preferred the show over the books.

Currently not really reading anything... however, for an elective class at school I have to read a book (and draw an illustration based on said book) in the next 3 weeks ...but I can't think of one
a few of the criteria that is required of the book in question: - needs to be educative; book needs to have story or message - must be weighty; at least 100 pages (can't be a comic), and on par with your reading level (seeing as my mother language is Dutch and I also read English books that's shouldn't be to hard) - must have a link with talents or expressivity; in the summary (that we need to write) we need to explain what the story has to do with talent or expressivity, for example if the main character has a certain talent
the only books I personally have are the Dragon Age books (not including Tevinter Nights since I'm dubbing whether to get it), some GW2 books and the Hobbit+LOTR trilogy sure my parents have loads of other books (some of them old)...but I'm not really sure what book to get
I'd take a Dragon Age book for it in a heart beat...but I'm kinda worried my teacher is going to be very confused (on the other hand that teacher knows I'm a gamer and he's also seen (and been quite admiring of) my fan art of DA)
as for the summary we need to write, well, that also needs to meet some criteria - Title of the book as well as the genre(s) - Writer of said book with some minor background info on the writer - When was the book published (year of publishing and edition) - Other books of this writer - Reason why you picked this book - Would you recommend this book to someone else? - Link of the book toward talent or expressivity - Main characters of the book - Setting of the book - Short recap of the story itself
so yeah...would it be really weird to pick a Dragon Age book for something like this, or would this be what my teacher means as in "why did you pick this book?" because my answer to said question would be "because it means a lot to me"...or would someone say "pick something else?"
also as a thing...I can't go to the library due to COVID-19 and don't own an E-reader either

morning, Mel....thanks for the input. I'll keep it in mind as I decide what to do about reading, or even selling them Glad to be of service. I forgot to add, the first 4 books felt like a poor imitation of Jordan's WoT series. A lot of similar factions, like Sister of Light/Dark = Aes Sedai, Mord Sith end up as Maidens of the Spear, etc. It just didn't come across as very original. But, like I said, I only read the first 4 so maybe they get better after that?

I would think that you could get away with using a DA book but the only issue would be if your teacher is a literary snob or doesn't think Fantasy is a "serious" literary style. The hardest part will be defining and explaining the "educative" part and identifying a valid "Talent" but Leadership if it is present would probably be one. All books are educative on some level and "expressive" but it depends if it fits what you think the teacher is after. Can you identify these things and ask the teachers opinion?

I just finished the Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons. First, a very short (IMO) non-spoiler intro to the first book, to give you an idea of what it is all about: In the 29th century, mankind has spread out across the stars and colonized hundreds of planets. On one of these planets, called Hyperion mysterious structures, named the time tombs can be found, guarded by a the enigmatic and deadly Shrike entity. With war brewing between the colonial Hegemony of Men and the space dwelling Ousters, seven pilgrims are chosen by the Hegemony leadership and the church of the Shrike cult to travel to Hyperion in order to hopefully lift the secrets surrounding the time tombs and prevent an interstellar war... Dare I say this is now among my absolute favorites in the realm of science fiction. Those four books are a wonder of story telling and even though they have been written 30 years ago, they have lost nothing in their believability or immersion of the universe he creates nor in any of the technical or philosophical terms. This is actually quite an achievement if you think about what happened in the past 30 years technologically IRL. The combination of old school philosophy, theology, classic art and literature with a high tech far future the technology of which touches on a lot of very sophisticated real life concepts on technology and cosmology today makes for a unique, very deep and thoroughly enjoyable setting. The plot itself (or rather, the two connected but fairly distinct plot lines that are separated by a few centuries with each taking up two books) is fantastic IMO. Really interesting characters, plenty of revelations, twists and turns and plenty of action are set up in a very logical framework in which I couldn't really find any major plot holes at all. Plus, each of the plots lead to very satisfying endings that do not disappoint (which is not easy). While I liked it, some people might not be too thrilled about how the first book is written mostly in the format of each main character telling their individual background story. Personally, I thought it gave the book a unique structure and exposed us gradually to ever new aspects of this universe, which was great. But it may not be everyone's cup of tea and I have seen the understandable criticism that despite the fact that different characters are supposed to tell their own stories, the writing style of the author doesn't really change much to reflect them. But that's pretty nitpicky if you ask me. If I had to give one criticism of my own it would be that the characters sometimes refer a little too much to references in our IRL past, rather than mentioning events in the years between now and their own time period in the 29th century or later. There is actually an explanation as to why this is the case in the books eventually but it was something that did annoy me a little for the longest time. Just keep in mind that it will all make sense eventually. If you are into rather heady scifi at all and if you don't shy away from a lot of exposure to classic philosophy, theology and literature, I cannot recommend these books enough. Story telling at its finest. A solid 10/10 cruciforms. P.S.: On a side note, I read the books in the wrong order. First I read Hyperion (book 1) than Edymion and the Rise of Edymion (books 3 and 4) and last I read The Fall of Hyperion (book 2). I will say that - while not planned (I simply didn't know any better), this was not the worst way of doing it. The world changes a lot between Hyperion and Endymion (there are two centuries between them after all) and so when I started with Endymion I kinda discovered a whole new world all over again with lot's of questions as to how it got there from the end of the first book. In the end, reading the second book last then answered all of my questions, kinda like a prequel would. I just reached the end of The Fall of Hyperion and everything just clicked perfectly into place. Fantastic. I wouldn't exactly recommend reading them in this order (the first book does end in a cliffhanger) but it worked well for me. I was going to wait till the end of the first book to post but am impatient!!!!! Wow what a fantastic book so far anyway, my god the first few chapters I was like I will never finish this book but the telling of the characters stories are just magnificent. Have divorced my family in the evenings to fit more reading in. AnDromedary the book "Grass" by Sherri S Tepper is a very different book but I think it is as well written and that you'd enjoy it but that is based on having only read 50% of Hyperion. It jumped almost straight into my mind early into the reading of Hyperion. It has been ages since I read it but it is IIRC written in a similar style and with a fairly unique plot. "Generations ago, humans fled to the cosmic anomaly known as Grass. But before humanity arrived, another species had already claimed Grass for its own. It too had developed a culture...... Now a deadly plague is spreading across the stars, leaving no planet untouched, save for Grass. But the secret of the planet's immunity hides a truth so shattering it could mean the end of life itself." I have read several other Sherri S Tepper books and found them all great.

Hey, thanks for letting me know dazk and thanks for the tip. Will definitely check out Grass, once I am done with the Expanse books (which may take a while because I am only near the end of book 2 right now, btw, absolutely love Avasarala in the books, she's just as cool as in the series, if not even more so).
Happy to hear you're enjoying the other Hyperion books. I thought the way the universe developed with the Pax and all was really cool. Happy reading!

Well, that same teacher also taught us psychology, and the type to think up random stories to make our class laugh
the elective itself is about finding and expressing one's talents
for example a previous assignment was making a picture with an optic illusion in them (such as those pictures of people holding up the Tower of Pisa) another assignment was working in duos and putting on a little game of charades
so...say for example I pick the first DA book (The Stolen Throne) one of Maric's talents is his charisma, being capable of swaying (nearly) anyone he meets
as for educative...well, one could argue that Dragon Age is sort of based on real events in our history (albeit stylized and changed to fit the setting) I mean, France has occupied England a few times as I recall (I believe the Orlesian occupation is based on the Norman conquest of England) so...that'd be educative...sort of...maybe?
or I could just grab the Hobbit since its a book (and movie) most people will know when I was 14 I also read it for a book report...surprising my teacher at that time because in his words "that story was above the literary reading level of my age group" I told that teacher the first time I'd read it I was 12...surprising him even more

A few years back I started reading "The Traitor Spy" trilogy by Trudi Canavan and I got interested in the prequel books The Black Magician (a series of three books). But while I was very interested in the story and the world of the Black Magician series (even though it was intentionally written for Teens)....the books are fraught with horrible grammatical mistakes akin to things like "they is" and "Who's shoes are them?"...I mean, I tried to overlook it at first, but the deeper I read the first book, the more I noticed to the point where it was a huge turn-off.
I still intend on reading her books that I have collected (as I hate to think that I have wasted money on books I will never read, and as I said, I enjoy the story, characters and world)...But the horrible grammar is keeping me well at arm's length.

For fun, I am reading The Way of Shadows book One of The Night Angel Trilogy I am also reading, reading and re-reading and editing my own stories (star wars stories) that I began writing in high school twenty-five years ago.... I am continually adding more detail to expand or change the story, flesh out characters and give them more depth and just make them all around more in-depth, engaging, fun stories with rich and detailed characters.
I have done my best to make everything about the stories entirely original and completely of my own works and imagination; though I will admit, my first spark of inspiration was Timothy Zahn's Empire trilogy. Regardless of whether or not those books are now relegated to "LEGENDS" material and non-canon status, they're still some of the best star wars stories I've ever read. I dare say, better than the Disney Trilogy.
But Star Wars itself on a whole has held such magic for me and captured my imagination since I was three years old, I strive to write these stories instilling in them the same *magic* that inspired me.

Started Fall of Hyperion and had a bit of trouble getting into it but it has grabbed my attention in the last couple of chapters.

Iakus did you put me onto The Empire of Bones? Saw this today: "The Empire of Bones Saga by Terry Mixon Book 12 is with the editors now and will be available soon, so now is the perfect time to catch up on the continuing adventures of Princess Kelsey and her crew mates." Princess Kelsey still can't take the name with any credibility but she's not a bad character. Wasn't overly impressed with the last book but still looking forward to the next one. On a different front, almost finished Fall of Hyperion AnDromedary been a while since a books plot has done my head in but the 3rd quarter of this book is succeeding. The whole conversations with Ummon and the Keats Cybrid, I don't doubt Simmons is a masterful writer but man does he lose me sometimes. I often find myself having to re-read things because I either don't understand or cannot understand what the implications are. The man is very talented and knowledgable. Thoroughly enjoying it, just bought Rise of Endymion.

I liked the Hyperion books, but didn't care for the Endymion ones so much.

I've read them all. I tried the first back when Robert Jordan started to completely stall in 'Wheel of Time'. And I think I appreciated the tempo (of the story) in 'Wizards First Rule', so much that I forgave him his writing style (I can relate to that), for that single reason. I also consciously made a note to myself to keep a brisk tempo in what I myself wrote (-Oh, how I have dragged that note to shreds and stepped all over it ). Of course he soon stalled almost as badly as Jordan. I seem to remember there are several 1000 page bricks where basically nothing carries forward the story you wanted to read the continuation of. And just like Jordan, he invents and insert new plots, which he writes on for a good while, but then grows tired of and have to either let disappear into the mist to never be seen again, or rapidly tie up and dismiss in a rather unsatisfying manner, considering the buildup of anticipation. - BUT! saying that, I do want to stress that he's not anywhere near as frequent and bad sinner, at that, as Jordan! In that regard, he's much better than Jordan. ...But his writing style is a hefty bit worse. One has to get used to it and try to ignore the preaching. At least he's not as bad as women who write Vampire and Witch stories. . Looked on as a whole - it was a long time ago, but I think: - the books are rather uneven. And he doesn't really progress much to get better. He can slump down again anytime. There's also a smell of 'Gary Stu' over the series I think. I get the feeling some parts were written rapidly, hurriedly, others more deliberately. But yes, I enjoyed them and I kinda wanted to see what happens next. And I liked some of the peripheral characters, more so than Kahlan and Richard. So yes, I plowed through them all, the eleven, until 'Confessor', haven't read much of the later new, independent stories. I think his strength - as an author - is the story itself, not style, atmosphere, narrative or literature. I liked the books better than the TV series. Mostly because the TV-series was more like "Based on the characters created by..." than faithful to the books. Disclaimer: I'm kinda used to 1000 page bricks. I can't guarantee that others are not bored when I'm entertained. The seven books he has written since, starting with 'The Omen Machine' is not part of the original series. That ended with 'Confessor'. I've read two of them, and they seem more like individual, complete stories, set in the same world? Maybe it's a new series. I don't know.

Has anyone else ready Terry Goodkind's "SWORD Of TRUTH" series? Can anyone please give me their honest reviews of the books and where I should start? Or if I should start? I read most of the Sword of Truth series. Some of it is OK. Mostly its bland, cookie-cutter fantasy and is not particularly worth bothering with. There are many, vastly superior fantasy series that deserve ones attention ahead of Sword of Truth. Its not terrible, its just not good either.
