Don't laugh!
Years ago the wife of a dear friend gave me the first edition (!) of the SECOND novel bought at the actual farm that I enjoyed but for some reason never finished. I had NO idea it was a series of books. Having grown up in Europe I was not aware of its HUGE popularity...
It's a great novel. There's excellent social satire to be found. And Anne is like the most hilarious crossbreed of my best friend and myself!

I just ordered this: Anyone read it? I bought it just from a single recommendation, hope its good. So I am at page 80 or so and I simply cannot continue, the book drives me nuts. NUTS I SAY. The writing style is awful, first I thought it would get better but it only gets worse, the author describes every little gesture or action of a character in such great details and in lengthy metaphors that only a few things happen per page. It drags and its hard to read that way. I yearn for a couple simple sentences that do not read like a freaking drawn out poem. Don't get me wrong, its a great way to underline meaningful events and important actions every now and then, but not every damn thing that is happening. A pity, really, the world seems very interesting, its angels, demons, guns, tanks, swords floating cities and knights thrown into a post-apocalyptic mix that appears to work really well, at least as far as I can tell from having read 80 pages of it. But no more.

Undeath and Taxes: Fred, the Vampire Accountant Series #2 After discovering just how filled with magic, intrigue, and adventure the parahuman world of being an undead American can be, Fredrick Frankford Fletcher did exactly what was expected - he became a certified parahuman accountant. Myths and legends, as it turns out, are not so great at taking appropriate deductions and keeping their receipts, and Fred is more than happy to return to a life others view as woefully dull, expanding his accounting business to cater to various monsters and their respective financial needs. Said monsters are, unfortunately, still spectacular at pulling Fred into trouble, though. And despite merely wanting to stick with simple paperwork, Fred once again finds that he is going to have to deal with enchanted weaponry, government agents, possessed houses, and one enigmatic dragon's interest. In the parahuman world, any business can turn deadly, even one as mundane as accountingThis series isn't quite as good as Hayes' "Spells, Swords and Stealth" or "Super Powereds" series. but I felt a need for something a bit lighter. And this fits the bill.

I just finished this book. It was a good news bad news book for me. The good news was that it progressed the lore of the setting pretty well, the locations were interesting and the over all story was good. The bad news was that the characters were absurdly inconsistent in their behaviour and the actual writing was pretty spotty at times. The author did the same thing in this book as he did in his first book of the series "This guy does all sorts of bad things, but he is not really bad or evil." I'll buy and read more of the books in that setting but will take a break from this author.

I would go back to PEI if I could and would love to see more of the east coast. Of course, I'd love to see Jasper and Banff, too. Have been to Whistler-- was not a fan at all; it reminded me of Canada's Wonderland, very theme park looking with the way the shops and lodges were designed and the people were not friendly at all. Now in PEI, they were.......Well, I've always said the friendliest people in Canada if not the entire eastern seaboard of Continental North America, are on the east coast of Canada. Lost your vacation deposit due to dishonest business practices of shady places? We'll give you our place for a fifth of the normal price. C'mon down and check it out! If it comes to recommendations however, I will wholeheartedly tell you all good Bioware folks to read the shit out of this guy: His name is Henry Rider Haggard and he is one of the pioneers of the adventure novel. Suffice it to say that there would be no Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, The Phantom or any other type of adventure genre if he had taken a bullet during his many journeys in Africa. He is probably more famous in pop culture because he created the character of Allan Quatermain, as seen here in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie: Shit movie, I know, but if you're curious about reading his work, I wholeheartedly recommend this tiny little collection of his on Amazon, which I bought for a dollar and a half: Amazing writer. Deffinitely among my favorites.
I just purchased his complete works for my kindle from Amazon. I have heard of a few of his books but have not read any so I am going on your recommendation.

Finished this one: Beautiful prose and lovely characters. It's unfortunately not a great entry into Dumas' "D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers" saga. The free version on amazon, which is the one I read, is also a pretty deceptive offering, since it's the actually part of a greater novel called "The Vizcount of Bragelonne" and that's the one you should read. Now I'm starting: i.pinimg.com/736x/66/df/c5/66dfc52afd58169cdba0d88e7c983fb4.jpgBecause Geralt of Rivia is awesome ! It's also the only one I haven't read from the whole saga. Let's see how it stands next to the others.

So finished reading The Night Angel Trilogy and the Novella, good read but I had some issues with the overall structure and about when and what information was revealed about main characters etc. More detail in spoiler: So finished reading the three books and the Novella, thoroughly enjoyed the majority of it but I found how Weeks built the story weird and that ultimately it diminished the understanding and enjoyment of the story for me. The Novella only reinforced this for me as it contained information that would have been great at the beginning of the overall trilogy.
My main complaint is that too little information is given about Ezra, Jordan Alestes and Acaelus etc. at the start. In my opinion that should have been at the beginning as a prologue or woven into the first book via flashbacks of Durzo's life. Again a larger insight into Durzo's life would have been beneficial as would a lot more insight into Dorian, Solon, Feir and Momma K's earlier life. It was just weird and hard to build a rapport/understanding of who they were and are without knowing their place in their culture/families hierarchies. Having it thrown it suddenly given to you in book 3 (especially Solon's situation) was strange and I still am not sure who/what Feir's history is. I think it was mentioned briefly but I obviously don't remember anything other than he went to school with Dorian and Solon.
Also there were too many leaps in time early on when it would have been great especially in book one to have had more focus on Durzo/Kylar's training etc. The Novella gives a great short story about one quest after Kylar get's the Kokkari that would have made a great addition to the development of his character.
Anyway, in short really liked the books but they could have been constructed at least for me better by building a better knowledge base of the history and by supplying more information on the main characters earlier on so you had a connection of them to their countries/culture and families. It seemed too much like Weeks was trying to be too clever with a big reveal at the end rather than allow a greater emotional attachment to the main characters.

Has anyone read The Screwtape Letters? Talking about C.S. Lewis I quite enjoyed it, I thought the way it was written was clever and funny at times. Now, C.S. Lewis will forever be known for the Narnia series but some of his other notable works include Mere Christianity and The Problem with Pain.

So started to read the first book of The Lightbringer Series: Black Prism and couldn't get past Chapter 5. From the very first page I had the feeling that I had either read or tried to read this book before but I no longer have it if I did. Maybe I am a bit fantasy read out, but I just found it boring as. So I am going to have a break and have started a series I downloaded for free a while ago called: Aliens, Robots and The Apocalypse by Jasper T Scott. I couldn't stop reading it even though it is not the greatest writing I have read AND some of the characters are REALLY stupid (in terms of their actions) but the story is pretty engaging. I am really interested to see where it goes.

I know everything has there own tastes...so I'm not going to say "you should read The Lightbinger" because, and try to convince you to do something you don't want to. That's not my point. But I will say/agree/admit that for me, when reading the Lightbringer right after The Night Angel Trilogy.....The Lightbringer was a bit difficult to get into. I guess that's because i thought it was so different from Night Angel that it was almost weird, and certainly not what I expected. And contrary to The Night Angel, Lightbringer does begin slower. I will add though that if you ever do decide to pick it up again.....stick with it. The first book starts off slowly, but even as you get into the second, third and fourth books (i'm about 60% done the fiourth book, waiting for the 5th and final book in August of this year), the story does get better. But hey, everyone needs a break now and then, especially if you've been reading a type of genre constantly for moderately long periods of time. It's good to try something different now and then, even within the same genre, maybe you just want a differant writing style and that's okay.

I have read about 10 fantasy books in a row and think I just had a hankering to read some light fluffy Sci-Fi romp for a change. I also agree when you say it was so different to The Night Angel Trilogy that that didn't help either. What intrigues me is that it felt so familiar but I am not one to get rid of books (much to my wife's annoyance) and have been through them all but can't find it.

Finished reading: Another great adventure from The Witcher series. I would recommend it as a full novel for those who are newcomers to the saga but it might still be better if you started with The Last Wish. Still a beautiful and super fun fantasy adventure novel though. Now I'm starting: I've always been fascinated with survival adventure. This time I'm moving from Haggard's hot african wilderness to what seems to be the north american frost. Bring it on !

I read white fang years and years ago, I think for school. I remember nothing about it. Barely even read the first two pages and I'm already finding a quote about how "The Wild" hates "Movement" in all its forms and presentations. The main one being "life". It's already a doozy

I just finished Steampunk Cthulhu, a compilation of crossover stories between the Cthulhu Mythos and Steampunk. Some of the stories were really good. For example one, in which a mad scientist wanted to summon Hastur into a robot.
Now I'm reading the new Peter Grant novel by Ben Aaranovitch:False Value. If you never read the Rivers of London series:Do it now!

I just finished reading this. Quite a good book, fairly weird and you can see parts of it influenced later novels. Have you read his Quatermain adventures ? How does this one stack against those ?

I have not read any of those, I have only read this one book so far but I am on another Haggard book, his 1st one titled 'Dawn' and it is good so far.
After Dawn I will get to King Solomons Mine.
