dazk : So I started Grass. Only read the first few pages so far (am still in Chapter two) but so far I find it very ... confusing. But I did see some amazon reviews that said it's a little hard to get into but worth it later, so I'll stick with it.

I read it a long time ago but remember being very impressed with clever story and the good writing but I do also remember that the political/societal part of the book was a bit confusing. I hope you enjoy it, I am always nervous about recommending books/movies etc.

I just finished King Solomons mine, very good book I liked it a lot. I'll probably start another Rider Haggard novel now before switching back to some Sci fi. So yourself a favor man and read "Allan's Wife". One of my favorites of all time. As for me, I just finished this one: 9/10 It's a beautiful and very informative guide about grief for psychologists and other people who work in the field. There's other versions for children and adults. All fully recommended. Now I'm reading: Really can't go wrong with this author.

Unfortunately, I didn't have too much time to continue but at least I got to the next chapter, that takes place on Earth (at least I think it's Earth). In the beginning I had some issues with all the names and terms but I think I am getting into it now.

I finished a book about some guy with a dark family mystery - and of course that mystery had to do with Jack the Ripper - again. I don't know, how many novels of that kind I read, I always get drawn in because of the victorian era, but it's so often aubout Jack. I have no problem with this in general, but since tehre are so many similar novels out there, there will be comparison and competition and this one wasn't really good. I liked, that tehy gave some of the victims some more backstory, but it could have gone deeper. Now I'm back to Becketts Jyhad Diary and just read the chapters, where he visited Count Dracula (and became a bride ) and the one, where he tried to find out the mystery about the vanishing/death/whatever of Baba Yaga - both were very interesting. The one about the african vampires was quite enlightening too (and Beckett being high was quite funny - he has a knack to stumble into strange situations). I'm looking forward to the Sascha Vykos one - Vykos is one of my favorite characters.

I just finished this last book of the Zulu 3 book series titled 'Finished' I have to say that Allan Quartermain has become my favourite literary character of an ongoing book series. When you read these books you have to consider when they were written and what was acceptable at the time. (As large parts of these books would be looked at as quite politically incorrect today and the behaviour of the lead character would also be frowned at, at times.) Putting that aside I have loved the setting for most of these books and have learned a lot about things I had little knowledge of. (Zulus, other africa tribes, the boars, the english's activities in South Africa). The author has a good knack of mixing just enough high adventure, a bit of romance, some mysticism, some tragedy into each book. It has been said that Allan Quartermain was the inspiration for Indiana Jones but he is far from the handsome swashbuckling sort. One thing I really like about the character is that he is honest and almost never holds things back. This seems like common sense but in Victorian literature they use the plot device of telling a little white lie or a big lie a LOT. I also like the series of companions or sidekicks he has in most of his novels (A fierce but aging blood thirty zulu warrior, an old old disgraced witch doctor, etc.) On to the next Allan Quartermain novel!

Rereading while waiting for Battle Ground: Since time immemorial, the Spires have sheltered humanity. Within their halls, the ruling aristocratic houses develop scientific marvels, foster trade alliances, and maintain fleets of airships to keep the peace. Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship Predator. Loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy’s shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when the Predator is damaged in combat, Grimm joins a team of Albion agents on a vital mission in exchange for fully restoring his ship. And as Grimm undertakes this task, he learns that the conflict between the Spires is merely a premonition of things to come. Humanity’s ancient enemy, silent for more than ten thousand years, has begun to stir once more. And death will follow in its wake...

I also like the series of companions or sidekicks he has in most of his novels (A fierce but aging blood thirty zulu warrior, an old old disgraced witch doctor, etc.) On to the next Allan Quartermain novel! There are a few good historic novel authors of earlier times. You may have come across some of them already, but I'm going to suggest a few names. Alan Scholefield. South African writer, wrote stories from early SA history. You need to watch out because he also wrote crime novels in late years. What you want is the old version who wrote historical novels in the '60s and '70s. The books are a bit more 'serious' and cruel novels than Quartermain, so it's not the same. Some titles: 'Wild Dog Running' South Africa 'Great Elephant' South Africa 'Eagles of Malice' South Africa 'The Stone Flower' South Africa Edit: 'View of Vultures' South Africa Those South African novels are the ones I really liked when I was young and binge-read Scholefield. Particularly 'Wild Dog Running'. I was lucky because our local library had them. They are not easy to find. Used on internet mail order is your option (or possibly a big library). In fact, I think I'm going to make an effort to get those myself. They're not really for people who want rosy endings though. More bittersweet, with a slight emphasis on bitter, perhaps. 'The Lost Giants' The American West <- Seem to remember I was bored by this, but I was young and only wanted more South Africa. 'Fire in the Ice' WW1 in Russia <- haven't read 'The Alpha Raid' WW2 Africa Did read, but remember nothing. 'The Hammer of God' Kinda recognize the title, so probably read it, remembers nothing.'Loyalties' WW2 <- haven't read

Thanks I have written those down. First little search and did not find them on amazon kindle but i will have to look more. I remembered another SA novel by Scholefield: View of Vultures. Similar harsh novel like the other four I recommended. I was also going to suggest Kenneth Roberts, who wrote 'Rabble in Arms', 'Northwest Passage', 'Lively Lady' and others about early US history, the revolution and war of 1812, but a warning is that they are also hard to get. And more expensive too. They have a somewhat lighter tone than Scholefield.

I don't like it, I'm near the end and it never picked like I hoped it would. Its basically the story of a young ''Mage'', or rather a teenager born with great magical powers, rising to the occasion to stop a great evil from leaving its boundaries. Its too Harry-Potter-ish for my tastes, the characters are unlikable and remain so for the entire book, the plot is unoriginal, it features only a little politic scheming, battles are ill and superficially described, the two main magical forces feel boring and that's about it. Also, the book does a bad job with the ''romantic tensions'' between some of the characters, while they do exist they're only briefly mentioned here and there and there is nothing really exciting about it. Also, the weird thing is it is never explained why the great evil is evil in the first place, everybody just knows that it must be stopped at any cost. I suspect, this being the first book of a series it may be only serve as an introduction to the other books, but still, its a chore to read and it is not entertaining at all. If its just an introduction it still failed as a book.

A cosmic cry for help Captain Mal Reynolds is in a fix. A cut-throat bandit On the arid, far-flung world of Thetis, the terrifying Elias Vandal is threatening to overrun the town of Coogan's Bluff with his trigger-happy army. He wants control of the only thing standing between its people and dustbowl ruin: their water supply. The Magnificent Nine When the crew land at the hardscrabble desert outpost, they discover two things: a savage outlaw gang who will stop at nothing to get what they want, and that Jayne's former girlfriend, Temperance, is singlehandedly raising a teenage daughter, born less than a year after she and Jayne parted ways. A daughter by the name of Jane McCloud... He'd like nothing more than to find honest smuggling work that stays under the Alliance's radar and keeps the good ship Serenity in the sky. But when an old flame of Jayne Cobb's sends a desperate plea across the galaxy, his crew has other ideas.
