Loved those books. And the Liveship series, also by Hobb. One of the all-time great fantasy authors, in my opinion. Same, did you read The Soldier Son Trilogy by Hobb? It was very different but I really liked it, first book is called Shaman's Crossing. I haven’t heard of it, but thanks for the tip. Will grab it once I’ve finished the Follett books.

After I enjoyed The Martian so much, reading this one was a no-brainer. It follows a pretty similar dynamic on the surface (man has to survive alone in space by using science equipment in creative ways). However, it does go way further out into scifi territory than The Martian did. I don't really want to say more because I was genuinely surprised by a few turns the plot took and that was half the fun of it. But if you read it be prepared for a lot more wackiness than The Martian had. However, despite that, it does stay true to Andy Weir's hard SciFi route. No Warp cores or artificial gravity here. He does take a few more liberal approaches here and there but all in all, it still is refreshingly close to the physically possible. The humor and the rather casual writing style are there again as well and make this a very fun and entertaining read. All in all, I give the book 9.5/10 g (rotational of course). Another excellent read for SciFi fans. I was also very happy to hear today that there are already plans for a movie. I am really looking forward to seeing a few scenes from the book on the big screen. Should be rather spectacular. My reaction upon learning this: "Amaze, amaze, amaze!"

Finished Dune and thoroughly enjoyed it, rmembered more than I expected after such a long time but maybe i just read fast it seemed much shorter than I remember. Could also be having read all the books reading just the first made it seem shorter. Started the second one but due to a fair bit going on inRL decided to postpone it and just read a Sci Fi light book I saw advertised on Amazon for free on The Kindle called The Torchship Trilogy. I am enjoying it so far the story is engaging and the main character is intriguing at this stage as you don't know much about her background but she is a kick ass pilot and would give even Joker a run for his money. www.amazon.com/Torchship-Trilogy-Karl-K-Gallagher-ebook/dp/B079VKR2KN

Sad to discover when searching to see if the latest book in a series I have been reading called The Star Cross series and The Originator War series that the author has passed away.
Raymond Lee Weil was born November 5, 1953 to Arlie and Wilma (Kappes) Weil in Enid, Oklahoma and passed away early Thursday, October 22, 2020
I am sad that I won't get to see how the story is resolved in The Originator Wars as it had reached an interesting juncture,
RIP Raymond L.Weil.

For my book discussion: Over a millennium in the past, humans fleeing Earth in slower-than-light vessels discovered the Waywork, an abandoned alien superhighway system that allows instantaneous travel from star to star. The problem: there are a finite number of Waypoint nodes—and the burgeoning population of humans is hemmed in as a result. Furthermore, humanity is divided into contending Starstates. One of the strongest is based on an oligarchy ruling families, but still mostly democratic. The other is a totalitarian nightmare. War seems inevitable.
Now a new Waypoint appears. Might it lead to the long-lost creators of the Waywork? If so, there may be knowledge and technology that will tip the balance in the coming war.
Three people race to make it to the new Waypoint—and beyond. These include Wyodreth Antagean, the reluctant son of an interstellar shipping magnate, Lady Garsina Oswight, the daring daughter of a royal family, and Zuri Mikton, a disgraced flag officer seeking redemption. They are facing an implacable foe in Golsubril Vex, a merciless, but highly effective, autocrat from the Waywork’s most brutal regime. Vex is determined to control the new Waypoint and whatever revelation or power lies on the other side.
Now humanity’s fate—to live in freedom or endless dictatorship—depends on just what that revelation might be. And who gets there first.

So finished the first book of the Torchship trilogy and TBH I was just going to stop as it was just OK BUT I started the second book and am glad I did. In very little time I am half way through it, there's more action I am more familiar with the state of the Human diaspora if that is the right word and the differences between the different factions. I can also actually remember who the characters are. Some of what seemed minor incidents that I was like WTF was that all about have now born fruit which is good.

Edge of Eternity, Book 3 of the Century Trilogy by Ken Follett. This book deals with the start of the Berlin Wall and the beginning of the Cold War. As with the previous entry, it follows many of the same families as they move through and participate in events of the time. All of these books have been really slow for me to start and get into. It might be the fact that characters that were energetic and young in the previous book are now old, with grown children of their own whose stories I'm reading, but I think it's probably more the very matter-of-fact way that Follett writes. Most of my life, I've read Fantasy (of varying degrees of quality ), but all Fantasy writers have a degree of obvious flair. Follett - here at least - is writing real life historical people - the Kennedy brothers, for instance - saying and doing things they're confirmed (or believed) to have said and done while interacting with fictional characters. It's all very believable based on my limited knowledge - of Jack, in particular - like, when the only African American girl on his typing pool was invited to the White House garden for a pool party and he was "nice" to her. It doesn't take a seer to work out where that was headed. I'm enjoying it, though, but they're depressing in a way that even ASoIaF isn't because...these things actually happened. Gulag, Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis (nearly there), Berlin Wall. Once I'm finished with this, I'll probably need a fantasy palette cleanser, even if it is dark and moody. At least I'll be able to read and enjoy it without recalling that these shitty things actually happened to people within my parents life time.

I can also actually remember who the characters are. Some of what seemed minor incidents that I was like WTF was that all about have now born fruit which is good. So finished this trilogy and I am not sure what to say about it. It had some high points and some low points and mainly middling points. The author seemed to be far to focused on personal relationships than other stuff yet the over arching story of the different cultures and their take on AI was there but and exploited by the author but it never really grabbed me when it should have been a really important part. Some of the plot directions were a bit incredulous and far too much focus on stuff that was important in the first book but largely irrelevant in the other books. The author killed a favourite/main character that I really liked in a fairly innocuous/stupid way purely to open the Captains slot on the ship. More creative avenues could have been better exploited as it led to another character departing as well. Big emphasis on one group in the first book and then some of the second only to lead to that group mostly disappearing in the books. The main character went for me to being a good character to a poorly written one whose main plot device the author made was sex and or focus on her relationship. Anyway wasted enough time writing about it, it was over all entertaining for the most part and I may be harsher on i than I should because I often found myself reading it late at night when I was tired.
