So we now have the obligatory "Best game of all time" thread, and it has already given me some good hints on some games I have missed and want to try now . Besides overall favorite games, there have always been those single game levels which left me impressed with the feeling of having experienced something extraordinary - be it for overall awesomeness, atmosphere or those literal holy **** ! moments. My favorite level of all time is the "Shalebridge Cradle" of Thief: Deadly Shadows. Which one is yours ?

Wow... tough call. Off the top of my head... either the Citadel in Half-Life 2 or the final battle in Portal 2.

Don't know if you can say there are "levels" in open-world games, but let's say for the sake of argument that there are. In which case I will say, robbing the Imperial City library for the Thieves Guild in Oblivion.

Ye, I go with final battle of Portal 2 (for now). The twist to find a suitable white surface was awesome.

Floating Continent in FF6 is a standout to me. I remember being painfully anxious the entire time I was playing through it (particularly because I thought it was the end of the game and I was mentally preparing for a fight I was sure my characters were woefully unprepared for.) Afterward, I felt as adrift as the characters were. Shadow, nooo...! If I had just waited

Tough call, but my initial thought was "Whodunit?" from ES4: Oblivion. Great atmosphere and a thrill for someone who grew up on Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle.

The game - I didn't finish, though (Too many of these portals)

I am an odd one out. Oblivion is actually my favourite of the Elder Scrolls games (never having played Arena or Daggerfall, so I can't speak to those).

I am an odd one out. Oblivion is actually my favourite of the Elder Scrolls games (never having played Arena or Daggerfall, so I can't speak to those). Odd indeed XD I didn't like it, but maybe it was because I had played Morrowind... And anything would have been a let down after that. As for Daggerfall, I tried to download it from Bethesda's site and play it, but... I just can't. It's too damn old. Which is sad cause it seems like it was a really good and deep game. I mean, what kind of game lets you choose traits nowadays...?

I actually have a couple of those. The intro for Half-life for example. Awesome! Also this one:
When I first played that mission, I was completely unable to react and promptly got smashed to bits.
Also the haunted hotel in Vampires The Masquerade.

Hexen - Seven Portals. In case anybody remembers this. I do! Lost so many hours getting through that. Such a great game. I have a lot of memorable levels from Duke Nukem 3D, Alien vs. Predator 2 (mostly the multiplayer maps), DOOM and DOOM II, Deus Ex, Future Cop: LAPD and some tracks from Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit. But the best overall levels I've played are imho all the ones from Project EDEN. Still my favorite coop game to play with friends.

Dungeon crawling in the Skein (and later speaking with the Slumbering Coven) in Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer remains one of the most unsettling things I’ve ever had to do in a game, oh my god. Gulk'aush is terrifying. ALL THE HAGS ARE TERRIFYING. It's atmospheric and creepy, and the revelations of all that took place there are even more horrifying than Gulk'aush's creepy fucking madness mantra.
“Bite off the bone, SUCK the marrow!”
“Where’ve you gone, my son, my son? Gone to rot in the sun, the sun? Please come back, my son, my son… KILL THEM ALL, ONE BY ONE!”
“Oh, my love, my love. Your flesh stuck in my teeth, my love! You were too salty, too salty, my love. When I belch… I still smell your sweet perfume. My love…”
And then she’s all,
“Sleep, sleeeep… sleeeep! SLEEEEEEP!”
NO MA'AM I DON’T THINK I WILL

Appropriately for this thread, it was a level design issue for me. Eventually I felt like it became a question of which repetitive template am I going to deal with now: Ayleid ruins, natural cave, or Oblivion? Of the ES games I've played Oblivion is the one I played through to the end the least, although I did run numerous characters through the various faction quests. Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, and Daedric quests stand out in my memory (the Mephala quest and most of Shivering Isles, in particular).
