Given an opportunity to do a sequel trilogy to one of the greatest scifi franchises of all time, one's thoughts should be "How can I do this franchise justice, and preserve George Lucas' masterpiece?" not "How can I fill the proper checkmarks?" Good thing it did that then.

How is JJs words pretentious? Another hot take in a place chalk full of them apparently. I take it as a simple acknowlegement of fact. You make a piece of entertainment, some people dislike it, some people like it, if the people who dislike it have a point you learn from it and try and do better next time. Its certainly a lot better then Rian's initial reaction to the critics of TLJ. It is better. But when you f*ck with what is arguably the single most-recognized franchise out there, that at this point two generations have grown up with, that deserves more than a shrug and "Oops" They screwed this up to an epic degree. The franchise will be years in recovering, if ever. Star Wars is not something you "learn" from. It's something you bring your A-game to. Not experiment with. And if you must put on your beret and be artsy, save it for the side stories.

Good thing it did that then. It may be sad but this type of representation is still important for some people...and maybe it should even be. It seems a lot of people just can't relate with a character unless they are *like* them in very physical ways. On the flip side of the issue though just because you make a 'diverse' of characters of every color and gender out there does not mean the story will itself be bad.

It got so bad that I think i was deeply afraid for at least two of the three movies that they were going to suck...well now my interest in Star Wars is bigger then ever. You might not like them, that is perfectly fine, but I think they took Lucas's original template and improved upon it in a lot of significant ways. Sure they made mistakes...but everyone does that.

And I for one am looking forward to the Black Widow movie, and I look nothing like Scarlet Johansson

And there is different levels of realtability and interests in stuff. I too am looking forward to Black Widow, I do not look like Scarlett Johanson, but I don't really relate to the character that much. I think going forward every Star Wars trilogy plot could be: bunch of Sith out in the Unknown Regions uses occult Sith magic to bring back Palpatine and threaten galaxy.
(Also blows up planet to instill... FEAR!!!)

Probably the best way to hear the Emperor's and Rey's themes is to mash them together.

Anyone else read the new timeline/cannon novels? I've only read 2, Aftermath: Empire's End and Thrawn, and they both show the Emperor's interest in the Unknown Regions and plotting contingency plans for that region if the Empire falls. This hints at some plan of his coming to fruition in the new trilogy, as it seems to have done in Rise of Skywalker.

Maybe we'll have the Emperor again as he body hops like in SWTOR.

SWTOR is, what(?), thousands of years before the Galactic Republic which lasted for 1000 years before the 30 year reign of the Empire. Maybe the information on the SWTOR era Sith and Unknown Regions was lost in history, which the 2 remaining Sith on the movies sought to recover. Though, wasn't Palpatine body hopping a plot device from the Thrawn trilogy novels, and subsequent Dark Empire comics?
Does anyone know if in The Last Jedi novelization, do Poe, Finn, and Rose process the fact that their hijinks with DJ lead to the undermining of Holdo's escape plan, and the deaths of so many Rebels?

It seems that in the sequel trilogy the only person whose actions has consequences is Finn judging how he gets yelled at for breathing.

Imagine a former child soldier being lectured on slavery and exploitation by a hairless ewok who later steals their first kiss after another redundant lecture. Also a repost ...

Like Hux both of their actors deserved better. IIRC EU Palpatine's sole reason for being interested in the Unknown Regions was the Vong threat but JJ copied elements of the EU without the context, tossed Valkorian/Vitiate, Dark Empire Palpatine and Dr. Evil into a blender and "voila!", TROS Emperor is born.
