So, out in the Unknown Regions - are there a bunch of planets that support the First Order and live under their regime? What happens to them now that Palpatine and the Supreme Leader are dead, do they go join the New Republic or just start building another invasion fleet?

What happens to them now that Palpatine and the Supreme Leader are dead, do they go join the New Republic or just start building another invasion fleet? ...Is the "current" First Order invasion fleet even gone? You know, the one they were conquering the galaxy with without Palpatine's Death Star Destroyers? The New Republic was already having a hard time controlling anything in the Outer Rim. Assuming that the massive civilian militia or whatever that turns up for Exegol helps the Resistance destroy or subdue the remaining fleet, the most they can probably do is trace the paperwork back to those planets and dismantle whatever infrastructures were specifically supporting the First Order, and then leave the populations to figure things out for themselves. Maybe with a bit of oversight to make sure they don't get stupid ideas for a while. I can't imagine the New Republic being organized or rich enough to "bring them into the fold" very effectively or humanely after this conflict. And it most likely wouldn't be worth it. Suddenly dismantled total war economies tend not to be pretty for a long time after. Even in the most ideal and generous scenario those planets are going to receive an influx of confused and brainwashed young men and women whose only skills and life experience consist of staffing warships. Then again, who knows. Anything can go with Disney. Maybe those systems turn out to be strange and different but otherwise perfectly functioning and grateful for getting their kidnapped children back, and the positive relations with the Republic turn into a profitable cooperation that redistributes wealth to the Outer Rim between them and expands the known galaxy. And the next three movies won't even have conflicts, they'll just be cavalcades of good developments to showcase how brilliant everything gets when you start optimizing society after having gotten rid of all the nazis.

Yeah, at the beginning of the movie the galaxy has pretty much been beaten into submission, and there's no one out there to that will even return the resistance calls for help. You add Palpatine to the story, but he's not commanding the First Order forces, he has his own forces, which were also added in the last movie. So the resistance defeats Palpatine and his forces, but this only sets things back to the way they were at the start of the movie. All the systems all those ships came from would have to unite, organize, and fight the First Order, and any systems loyal to them.

All the talk of Finn's storyline got me thinking of how epic this trilogy could have been if Finn was the Jedi, or Rey had Finn's background. A First Order soldier touched by something that causes them to leave the first order. Rescues Poe and finds BB8.
Then throughout the movies deals with guilt over what they've done in the past, anger at the First Order for taking them from their family, and making commit such atrocities. Anger the protagonist has to control as they flirt with sliding over to the darkside. Flashbacks, and remnants of First Order programming constantly plaguing them.
Maybe they try to rehab a captured first order trooper or officer. Which could lead to cracks between them and the resistance because they could see the resistance, distrust, and rejection of this person as a rejection of them. Ultimately they could either have succeeded in rehabbing this person, and making them an asset to the resistance, or failed, and had to live with the failure. Wondering if they're ready to shoulder the expectations and responsibilities being asked of them.
These are just a couple of avenues that would have been opened up by this backstory, with many more possibilities.
May have to go outline some AU fanfiction.

Dude, you can't do coherent story-telling today! You need to subvert expectations. Next thing you want to tell something about how the first order came into being and such and give it a proper frame. We can't have that. Add more action scenes and ultra-quick cuts. Bling it up with special effects and the dumb-found viewers will wonder what they have seen and try to make sense of it for years in internet forums.

At the start of the movie the First Order is on a roll. They don't even need what Palpatine offers, it's just a convenient shortcut to where they're going anyway. The only real losses they suffer in the end is the erratic manchild figurehead and the inestimable leadership of Richard E Grant. Shouldn't they still be a huge thread? I guess that montage of skirmishes at the end could be meant to indicate that the fleet appearing at Exegol is just the main effort, and the First Order is being fought off all over the galaxy. But if all it took for the entire fleet to be destroyed was actual effort from the galaxy at large then... isn't it pretty late? Remember when Hux and Kylo, heading a far less entrenched First Order, nuked four of the richest and most central planets in the galaxy and faced no retribution whatsoever even after their super-mega-weapon was disabled? That wasn't a call to arms?

They were on a roll at the start of the second movie. I believe the opening crawl says something to the affect of Snoke was sending his forces all over the galaxy to tighten his grip, and that the only thing standing in his way is Leia and the resistance. By the end of the movie the resistance is reduced to the Falcon and a few dozen people. So after a time skip with their only obstacle removed, the First Order would have had a boot on the galaxy's throat at the start of the last movie. They set a pretty somber tone at the start, and the morale of the resistance was very low.
Then, since they wasted Hux's character so thoroughly and made such a joke out of it, he wasn't any kind of loss. They reduced him from being the primary officer reporting directly to Snoke to just another officer in a board meeting. Then they just killed him off, while someone else had pretty much already stepped in to fill his role. But all those officers from the meeting in the beginning would still be commanding their forces in their designated areas of the galaxy.
I won't even go into how a galaxy scared to even contact the resistance, all of sudden organized, defeated Palpatine, and launched all of these counter offenses in a matter on mere hours. Lando circled the galaxy and put together a fleet faster than Han made the Kessel run lol. The end of the movie was just preposterous.

I can kinda see the difference in response. It's the difference between: - Go assist Resistance as they fight to escape - Go stop that crazy Emperor who we deposed 30 years ago from coming back Although, I'm reading the Thrawn novel now, and a story of an oppressive but functional Empire where people live and work in relative stability is eye opening.

To be honest Finn was screwed by Rian, JJ and possibly China since they don’t like black people and Disney wants to tap into their market.

smilesjaPiggy backing off a conversation that I am having somewhere else but it MIGHT be interesting to talk about: Just how...antagonistic...most of the Star Wars ships are is actually kind of interesting. You've had romantic partners insulting, demeaning, and borderling hating each other for a good part of their arcs before admitting their feelings...if they ever do. Han/ Leia. Satine/ Obi-Wan Luke/ Mara Rey/ Kylo Probably a lot more I am missing and it seemed Corran and his SO had a pretty healthy relationship. Wait...Bastilla Revan! My god kitty had claws with that one. Only ship which had pretty much mutual love and affection from the beginning was Anakin and Padme and somehow it ends up being the most creepy and offputting of the bunch (IMO)...though he did choke her to death in the end.

Well, sure. Disney's gotta have their OWN character revive the Jedi., Nor one of those old Lucasfilm farts. Not to mention have a Palpatine bring back the Jedi rather than a Skywalker. Subvert those expectations!

Subvert those expectations! I don't tend to visit the sins of the parents (or grand parennts) in this case on their descendants. If anything that is kind of a key theme in Rey's arc. She is not bound to the same evil of her bloodline.

It would've work, if it was built up as it stands the Rey Palpatine decision felt like it was added for the sake of giving Rey a legacy.

I don't see how it works. She's a bit of a Force-user savant, and is barely trained - most Jedi train from childhood. How is she going to pass on to other Jedi what knowledge she barely knows, or experience she barely has? She's got the books and Jedi Force ghosts to help I guess... You-know-who is probably going to be giving Rey the evil eye from Force heaven if her students start calling her "Master".
