Well that's just the thing I guess, not everyone is role playing to same degree so you might take it personally as the player, when the game gets the best of you or makes a fool of you.
I like it though. I like the mysterious sort of characters. Reyes seems pretty smart/clever and that pulled me in.

I can totally get why people were upset. Helping Reyes, charming third-rate smuggler vs helping Reyes, Charlatan and low-key ruthless criminal spylord vying for control of a planet are two very different things. It offers an entirely different perspective on the relationship (romantic or not) and what your help was facilitating. It's not a small lie/omission.

^^Well Ryder is the PC so of course the world revolves around them.  But no, really, I think it's just something about an NPC tricking the player or taking action away from the protagonist that bugs people. And Bioware loves doing this from time to time. I'm curious if people who felt the need to act also found Jaal's loyalty mission difficult? That was another that involves Ryder just standing back and letting things happen (if you trusted Jaal, that is). I had a Ryder who took few interrupts, so she stood down in both missions. RPGs have been increasingly drifting from the whole "PC is center of the universe" mentality. And I really like that. I also love how ME:A occasionally makes inaction a valid choice. Too often video games fall into the "action good, inaction bad" trap, regardless of whatever else is going in with the in-game morality. Personally, I've also become less enamored of the PC power fantasy over time. Making the PC the only character with agency strips agency from the world and the characters that populate it. It makes them less interesting. And if the world is less interesting, so is the game. If I want to be an all-powerful immortal god emperor, I'll play Civ 6 on easy mode or something |

Hey- Michael Gamble just announced a patch will drop tomorrow. The wording of his tweet seems weird and kind of implies that it won't have any of the M/M patch stuff just yet, (I could be wrong on my deduction skills) but he promised patches will be rolling out soontm

MEA wasn't a bad compromise on the whole personal story vs. chosen one theme, actually. There's the possibility Ryder could find themselves at the center of a big conspiracy/cover up plot involving whole AI and Benefactor storyline, which could be an interesting way to be important without necessarily needing to be space Jesus as well. Mystery, intrigue! I hope they go that route. |

I think all of the "you are the Dragonborn," "you are the Pathfinder," "you are the commander," etc. is getting a little old. There is so much narrative opportunities and implications when you're not the lone savior of humanity. |

Aw, you're probably right. I picked the casual option first time Reyes thanked Ryder for being his +1, and just assumed they had sex after the roof scene (I actually thought that that was culmination for the romance, low expectations lol). Next time I tried the "should we talk" option, and like you said they only mentioned kissing, with Reyes rather keeping Ryder guessing than having a talk. That was a revealing moment. He definitely is being careful not to be a bastard towards Ryder. (Drops out of lurk mode) wait, what? I don't think I ever got that conversation - when I look for him after the party he has already disappeared (presumably in preparation for High Noon... what are the options here? I guess I Jinxed it by completing too much of Kadara before the party scene... |

I have a difficult time not romancing Reyes. I really want to go for Gil alone but then I meet up with Reyes and I'm lost. I'm crushing hard on both Gil and Reyes; I didn't know it was possible to romance them at the same time... I prefer to pursue one LI at a time though. Er, on purpose. My first playthrough was blind so I wasn't aware Reyes is an actual romance. He strolled in all  and charming so I flirted with him a little--but too much and then felt guilty because I realized it could be more. In my current run I just forgot how many times it was safe to flirt without leading him on. I hate going to the party and pretending like it's not a date just because I was too weak beforehand. I have to say, though, the party sequence just doesn't feel right on friend path...  Reyes on the field would be amazing. Hearing that voice would give the game so much more life. Just imagine what could've been if Reyes was the squad "smuggler" instead of Vetra. I mean, that Roekaar murder quest with him... My personal dream scenario, which won't happen:
Reyes and Kadara are plot-important and he's heavily involved, maybe as an intelligence provider. You meet him, share emails and video chat with him often. He joins up with Ryder for a few missions, maybe even comes aboard the Tempest for a mission to some planet or whatever; team mates like Liam would disapprove, maybe he'd strike a deal with Vetra about something shady, of course a brief romance scene at Ryder's quarters. In these missions he's available as a proper squaddie (I imagine him using the tech tree, assault rifles and pistols). He can also be picked up as a squaddie for the End Boss Mission, if Ryder's either his lover or very good friends.
If you picked Sloane, she lends Kaetus for you for equivalent missions, meaning you get a MALE TURIAN, thus giving people reason to go with her for a playthrough.

I have a difficult time not romancing Reyes. I really want to go for Gil alone but then I meet up with Reyes and I'm lost. I'm crushing hard on both Gil and Reyes; I didn't know it was possible to romance them at the same time... I prefer to pursue one LI at a time though. Er, on purpose. My first playthrough was blind so I wasn't aware Reyes is an actual romance. He strolled in all and charming so I flirted with him a little--but too much and then felt guilty because I realized it could be more. In my current run I just forgot how many times it was safe to flirt without leading him on. I hate going to the party and pretending like it's not a date just because I was too weak beforehand. I have to say, though, the party sequence just doesn't feel right on friend path... Reyes on the field would be amazing. Hearing that voice would give the game so much more life. Just imagine what could've been if Reyes was the squad "smuggler" instead of Vetra. I mean, that Roekaar murder quest with him... Hard to say if he'll get a bigger or closer role in the future, because it likely would have to be a slot that can accommodate Sloane too. I don't think that Sloane and Reyes will be interchangeable characters going forward. IMO Sloane being potentially dead, and Reyes putting Keema as his front breaks that connection between the two characters. In all pts Reyes is effectively a free agent at the end which gives BW plenty of scope to develop him independently. Reyes doesn't seem to be one to hold a grudge, so regardless of earlier choices, I wouldn't expect him to be against working with Ryder if needs demanded it. Also, while it is absolutely fair for Ryder to dislike Reyes, he has not done anything horrendous to Ryder that would justify them refusing to work with him if it was required toward a greater good... I realise that some players would not be happy if this was forced on them, but that is largely their own personal dislike rather than ingame IMO... I mean, I personally really could not stand Liara throughout the entire MET... She was still friends with my Shep  . If we are to play as Ryder in a future game, I would be happy for circumstances to lead to Reyes being a squadmate, and in general I would like to be working less for the Andromada Initiative, especially as it seems that it is quite possible that there will be a darker side to the organization yet to be revealed. I do think that him not being a squadmate in MEA did add to the character though as the circumstances fitted, but I think continuing that distant relationship could get tired if continued through the series. |
