There's a shortage of fuel and you can't hire a landscaper to mow your lawn? No problem! Use a a handy scythe to cut your grass.

So, is anyone planning on doing any kind of preparations for the coming months? I mean, besides the Virus probably picking up in severity due to the cold winter weather, there is also the looming dangers of inflation, severe travel restrictions, surge in crime / civil unrest, bad medical care situation, high unemployment rates and bad availability of all kinds of services. Its safe to say that things gonna get rocky this winter. I wonder if anyone has any clever ideas to improve their situation in the challenging times ahead, because right now is the time to act and prepare, while things are still running relatively smoothly.

I was thinking about increasing my unsecured debt levels to astronomical levels because theres a good chance that I'd never have to pay the bill originally I thought about buying some loo rolls whilst they were back in availability but then I remembered my son seems to use the stuff up so fast a 9 roll pack only lasts a few days and since he joined the military he's spent more time at mooching at home than he did when he actually lived here and payed rent.... not sure how that happened /

I make walking sticks. I've found over the last few years it is a very underrated thing to have for my hikes, not just for walking cadence and balance.
I often glue a mini compass on the top of a walking stick.

Lot's of people walking their dogs without leashes. Using a stick to break up some 'incident' seem a more socially acceptable event than using a Fairbairn-Sykes, your teeth, or a gun.

I've had to use my walking stick to both threaten and show a wee bit of force in the past with unruly dogs.

I often glue a mini compass on the top of a walking stick. I'm not old enough to use a hefty walking stick without drawing unwanted attention - but if I had one I would take a metal end cap (threated pipe end) and epoxy glue & stake it to the walking stick. That way you have a walking stick that makes a formidable club. Something like the famous Flemish Goedendag spear-club, just without the spear.

For winter use last year I tried to add a small 'spike' to the bottom of my stick in the from of a screw so it would dig into snow and ice. It did not last the winter as it broke off. I'd like to figure out to get some kind of small cleat or point for winter walking. I have to think more on a possible solution.

I'd like to figure out to get some kind of small cleat or point for winter walking. I have to think more on a possible solution. Have you tried to forge a steel spike and harden it really good? Heat it up cherry-red and then dump it into vegetable oil, then anneal it by putting into your stove at 250 degree Celsius for half an hour. Depending on the steel you should get a good hardness this way. I do have two professional walking sticks I use whenever I'm hiking in the mountains with a heavy backpack, they have carbide steel spikes, basically the same material cutting tools for lathes to cut steel are made of. I use them hiking on granite and other really hard rocks and they are exceptionally durable. I think the hiking sticks will give out long before the carbide tips do. Maybe you can get your hands on carbide steel pieces from some machine shop or maybe you can repurpose some cutting tools for the very tips. High quality drill bits are also made from carbide steel.
