Has anyone played it? I decided to buy it with a 20$ steam card today. I'm almost done downloading/installing. Will report back in a few hours what I think of it. Looks like it was what NMS was suppose to be but 1/3rd the cost and more features. Steam pageExplore and reshape distant worlds! Astroneer is set during a 25th century gold rush where players must explore the frontiers of outer space, risking their lives in harsh environments for the chance of striking it rich. On this adventure, a player’s most useful tool is their ability to shape their world, altering the terrain and extracting valuable resources from planets, and moons. Resources can be traded or crafted into new tools, vehicles, and modules to create everything from massive industrial bases to mobile rover bases. Reshape terrain as though it were made of Play-Doh. Survive on and explore procedurally generated planets that can be entirely deformed and traversed. Build vehicles and travel to new planets and moons. Snap together components and objects to create custom vehicles and modules. 4 player online drop-in/drop-out co-op.

Alright so I'm about two hours in now and it's been really fun and much more polished than No Man's Sky. Performance wise it has been great no choppy fps, screen tearing, or crashes. There is a lot of clipping with the tethers and terrain tho if that bothers you. The sky at night and the storms are really really cool to look at. I've only built two buildings so far (smelter and research platform) you can craft/attach things to the buildings to customize them in a way, so if you're on a stormy planet you could go wind turbine route or if it is arid/sunny you could go solar panels. Right now I'm trying to find a cave to maybe find some aluminum. I found part of a rover in a crashed ship, so I need to create a vehicle bay with aluminum to fix it I assume.
I dunno how much depth is in the game it is still early access, but compared to NMS it seems way better at 1/3rd the price.

The rover/truck handles like the Mako from ME1 lol. Played for nearly six hours straight the game is addicting. Definitely an early access game tho I glitched through the planet and fell until I ran out of power/oxygen like three times. I had a bit of fps lag towards the end of my session too. Creating a convoy of rovers/trucks was cool to haul my artifacts around. I didn't get to the space part yet, but I did find the shuttle schematics so I might check that out tomorrow. The base building/planning is really fun the mines are repetitive and the only combat is terraforming some poisonous vegetations or hazardous terrain out of the way. My biggest gripe so far is you can't change your spawn point to my knowledge yet. I always respawned at my original pod which was about 45 minutes away from where I glitched and died. I had to build a new rover and trek across my planet just to go get my convoy of rovers.

Checked out a YouTube video of it. I'm betting the tether system's going to make things much easier in terms of exploration. Art style's nice, has a geometric simplicity that reminds me of Fract Osc.

Yeah, the tethers are basically the highways of your planet. I'm so bad at using the vacuum tool but I've seen some people on Twitch/YouTube who are masters with it and have created some really cool looking bases and structures out of caves/mountains. I love how you can pretty much design/customize whatever you want. The land really does have the play-doh feel.

I watched this on stream and find it interesting. All it needs, is a story.

Landed on my planet's moon. Looked really awesome visually with the Sun and your home planet in the sky. I forgot to bring a pod tho, so I dunno what I'm going to do for base building lol. Hopefully I can find some fuel to go home and craft a pod.

There is a 'voice' option in the settings I dunno if that just means the grunts/noises your astroneer makes or if there is actual dialogue somewhere down the line. I might buy it for a friend so we can play together, but she always just goes back to Terraria after a few hours no matter what I try to get her to play lol.

Alright well, I unlocked all of the 'research' and I think I've reached the endgame. I carved a base out of a mountain which was pretty fun and I messed around stacking terrain until I made a space elevator which was interesting (there is a hidden wall in the atmosphere but it's really high up). I have so many tethers my game kind of lags too. I dunno I think it is way better than No Man's Sky but it is early access and pretty shallow for a Minecraft/Terraria/etc type of game. I think this time next year it will be one of the best deals at the 15/20$ range. It gave me a solid 18 hours on my first playthrough and I might do another with some challenges/house rules like no tethers or something.
