i get killing alistair over hawke but doing so happily? you are dead inside Lol! I guess "happily" is a bit extreme I like Alistair well enough. He's cuddly and amusing. But he's also really into the whole Grey Warden thing, and like all Wardens, he's going to eventually die fighting darkspawn anyway. I figure this way he goes quickly, and gets to be a big hero in the process. frankly i think this was a brilliant finish to the quest. first playthrough i had to choose between hawke and stroud and i still stared at the screen for over 5 minutes (could have been 10 i hardly remember ). but each time the decision was not what i would do but what my inquisitor would do. my first inquisitor just couldn't do that to varric, 2nd didn't have to choose since my mage hawke in my mind just charged in without wating for a decision to be made which incidently saved alistair i think you should let hawke die in at least one playthrough for the emotional impact with varric, not to mention you get to hug him if the approval is high enough *wink wink*

Ouch! I've rivaled Varric. Told him to destroy the idol sliver. Varric: "What are you afraid of, Hawke? that I might wind up with more power than you? That would just kill you, wouldn't it?" My reply: "Let me say this slower. If you keep the shard, you will go crazy, and I will kill you." Haha and that was the sarcastic reply! Guess an Angry Hawke that Rivals Varric in this situation doesn't see the funny. Cuz that sarc reply was pretty darn direct!

Hahahahaha....okay.
Varric: "Look, Hawke. You've done a lot for me. You might have the charm of a sick bronto, but still. There you go."
Angry Hawke: "You did not just compare me to a Bronto."
Varric: "hey, brontos have a loads of charm. Of the dull rock licking variety, but it's still charm."

But a rude direct angry mercenary type that occasionally kills people? Angry Hawke responses always garner rival points with him. So. Mostly intentionally, but it was pretty easy when I was committed to using Red Hawke.

My first Hawke was red and almost never earned rivalry with Varric (only once that I can remember, when she threatened some little scamp for not saying where Quintin had gone). She was a bit of a thug, but not murderous, I suppose. Maybe that's the difference.

My first Hawke was red and almost never earned rivalry with Varric (only once that I can remember, when she threatened some little scamp for not saying where Quintin had gone). She was a bit of a thug, but not murderous, I suppose. Maybe that's the difference. Act One: On Act of Mercy, going in after the mages sounded like do gooding unpaid work. So I told Ser Thirsk to go do it himself. Can't remember if that's the aggressive option, but I kind of feel like it was. Varric Rivalry +10 When I talked to Varric for the first time in the Hanged Man, and he was telling me we needed to find a Grey Warden to get into the Deep Roads, I chose the Aggressive Choice: Varric Rivalry +15 On the quest where you help Meeran, the guy who gave you work for a year, pick the aggressive response when speaking to Gustav and kill Lord Harrimon. Varric Rivalry +15 On Shepharding Wolves Quest where you help that Qunari Mage get out of town, accepting the quest at all nets you +5 rivalry. When you return, threatening Petrice (which is the aggressive option) with death gets you another +5 rivalry. I don't really get these two, but whatevs Total: Varric Rivalry +10 Threaten Lirene, the shop owner who tells you where Anders is, for the information about where Anders is. This is the aggressive option.Varric Rivalry +5 Blackmail Ser Thrask about his mage daughter: This is a mercenary option with the coin symbol, but it's pretty mean. Varric Rivalry +5 Threaten Aden, the harbor mastor, for information. This is the aggressive option.Varric Rivalry +5 When you rescue Donnic from the corrupt Captain of the Guard's plot, pick the aggressive option.Varric Rivalry +5 Act One Ends; Total Rivalry gained? 70 Rivalry Points.
Act TwoIntimidating the Urchin for information when looking for your mother, which is the aggressive option: Varric Rivalry +5 When Varric chats you up about your plans for the future, pick the option about..."staying in Kirkwall isn't a sure thing." Varric Rivalry +15 Choose all aggressive responses in the Quest "Prime Suspect" Varric Rivalry +5 When finding Bartrand mad on the Idol in his mansion, let Anders heal him. Bartrand will be sane a minute and beg for death. THEN tell Varric to KILL HIM. If Anders isn't there to heal him, then Varric is actually happy to kill his brother and it will net you friendship instead. Varric Rivalry +15 Give Varric his gift on the rivalry path: Varric Rivalry +15 At this point I was maxed on the Rivalry path, and not even a third done with Act 2. And can do whatever I want. I am picking a mix of Sarcastic Answers and Angry Answers depending on RP and reloading a lot. Some of the angry answers make it my psychopathic murder Hawke sound like he cares. But a lot of that was merely picking the aggressive choice dialogue. And when reading those quests, it seemed like if all I'd done was be Sarcastic about it, I would have gotten friendship points instead.

Not that I wanted rivalry with Varric, but it just was so easy to lock in friendship with him that I didn't even think about it. If I ever feel like hating Hawke, I will do a playthrough and follow these tips.

But my goal was to be a "Dexter the serial killer Hawke" and I'm so very proud that I've role played it so well. I also adore DA for allowing me to be such a person so convincingly. So. I'm proud of this Hawke and Vex Hawke with not be forgotten. He rival romanced Fenris and told him to kill his sister. So, they are angry murderers together.

being aggresive, a jerk an generally killing people or loving blood would do the trick, he is ok with illegal stuff though, so need to be careful there. i think the real trick is being rival with varric while playing a sarcastic hawke

Alistair: I like my hair the way it is, thank you. Zevran: Truly? As you wish... though my advice is regarding something else completely. You are... feeling all right, yes? Perhaps you are tired? Alistair: We aren't talking about this, are we? Did I hit my head? Zevran: I have some roots from home that you may chew if you need energy. As for volume, perhaps you ought to try arching your-- Alistair: Whoa! Whoa! Awkward! Zevran: You Fereldens are so finicky. My favourite line has already been mentioned and it's the judging a box scene:
Inquisitor: I call for rehabilitation, the skull shall do public theatre about the Evils Of Evil. I also judge the box, end table for orphans. Josephine: That's quite enough inquisitor, point taken.
Second favourite line has been mentioned as well:
Tallis: What do you call it when you kill someone in order to get all their stuff? Hawke (aggressive): Tuesday
Another exchange that hasn't been mentioned is the Bull's chargers scene:
Dalish: Now sir ... you know I am not a mage. That would make me an apostate! Bull: You carry a staff, Dalish Dalish: It's a bow! Krem: A bow with a giant crystal at the tip? Dalish: Yes ... it's for aiming. An old elven trick you wouldn't understand!
So now I will never sacrifice the chargers because of the eccentric Dalish, she the best charger of them all!

you know, i feel with all the quotes from the game we left out the books and comics claudio: "you don't trust them, how wise your majesty" varric: "i think they talking about you" isabela: "quiet" ~ varric: "why you and i are here?" isabela: "i aked you to come" varric: "was i drunk?" ~ alistair: "no way to buy you off with cookies then?" ~ thesia: "they say the maker abandoned us for our sins, that he no longer hears our prayers or cares what we do. but sometimes i swear he's paying attention, and he's laughing his ass off"

Morrigan: what would have happened if you hadn't been conscripted into the Wardens?

Morrigan: you know yourself so well.

[/p] Another reason not to: Cole: "Copper on the lips. Dalish lies dead-eyed beside me. He'll come, he'll call, he won't leave us. Horns pointing up." Presumably, Krem's final thoughts... And so, for a more cheerful thought: Cole: Cassandra, who's... Regalyan? Cassandra: No one to concern yourself with. Cole: You were thinking about the time you— Cassandra: Now I'm thinking about something else. Can you guess? Cole: My hat wouldn't fit there...

Oh my goodness. What does Iron Bull even say back to Cole's comment? That is some hidden tragedy right friggen there. It's not banter. Cole actually says that when you talk to him in the tavern. It's one of the random lines he says if you sacrifice teh Chargers. Here's the banter: Cole: Blood, crash of metal, but silent underneath - the horn didn't blow! That one-eyed bastard, I knew he'd betray us! Iron Bull: Oh good, you're doing your thing again. Cole: They died fighting. In your mind, they hated you, but you're doing it wrong! That isn't what Krem thought! Iron Bull: Well, then... what did he think? Cole: "Horns pointing up." Iron Bull: Oh... yeah. Cole: No, that didn't help - I tugged on the tangle and tore it-- Iron Bull: It's all right. I'm good. Other COle/Iron Bull banter: Iron Bull: So Cole, you're polite, you're good in a fight, and your heart's in the right place. Cole: It is? Good. Iron Bull: I've got a plan. I think this could get you sorted out, get both feet on the ground. Cole: I have to lift my feet, or the rocks make noise when I walk. Iron Bull: Yes.... When we get back, you're going to spend an evening with a nice lady named Candy. Cole: Can I lift my feet? Iron Bull: She's gonna lift a lot more than that. Followed by... Iron Bull: So how was Candy? You two have a good time? Cole: Yes. She danced. Then I untangled the hurt that made her angry at her mother. Cole: I helped her write a letter to send back home. She said I could call her Marguerite, the name didn't hurt anymore. Iron Bull: Well, that was five royals well-spent
