It's a bit of a very long answer to write and give so I'll direct you to the Wikipedia for it with the link below. It has a more thorough explaination with spoiler tags for certain sections so you can decide for yourself if you want to know. Happy reading

The blight is whatever the writers want it to be,there are huge gaps in the lore of the blights that can be filled with whatever explanation the writers will come up with,provided that they will offer such explanations....
