So, assuming all things are as Bioware claims, buying a 2K chest (8 items with at least one guaranteed rare or unique item), should give superior odds of landing a high tier item than a 1K chest (4 items), right?
But at least two experienced players have suggested to me that the odds are actually better if you alternate between 2K and 1K chests (presumably because Bioware doesn't actually want you to get a "deal" on a chest, because that reduces the likelihood of people buying platinum?)
Any hard evidence for this? Did Luke ever allude to this?
I'm still missing a lot of the high tier gear but I don't want to waste my hard earned gold by buying the wrong chests ;-)

Some people have (or observe) better luck alternating between chests. I'm not one of them. Tried it with around 200k but got nothing for it. Of course, this could just as easily have happened if I'd bought only 2k chests, so... No. No hard evidence or allusions. Just hard luck and illusions.

I first read about the method of alternating between 2k and 1k chests on old BSN from a post made by Smurf. At that time I hadn't gotten anything new for months so I thought it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. Spent about 18k in the store and I got Brand, 2 +27% heal bonus armor updates, which was pretty impressive loot for merely opening 12 chests(6 enhanced, 6 superior). I kept doing this until I got Rime, and later Crescent in a 1k chest. But it's only my personal experience. There is no data showing it's a proved way to guarantee better loot drops for everyone. It can vary from person to person like Terrell's Ham theory. After all no one knows how exactly the RNG works except the developers maybe. Had I kept buying 2k chests, would it have been easier or harder for me to receive all my missing level 27s/Crescent? I could never know for sure. I guess you can give it a try with a moderate amount of money, say 20k(Not too much for a player with your level of promotion right?) If it doesn't seem to improve your loot, you can always go back to just buying 2k chests.

It doesnt guarantee better loot.
What it does, I have found, is stop loot getting locked on the same damn bow or staff or whatever 8 times in a row.
So only guarantee is different items not better items.
Just from my experience of course (2 years and 8 days playing)

Stop chasing losses. Buy 2K chests while you're getting something of worth, but when it gives nothing, buy low and if that doesn't give you anything either, STOP BUYING!!! Start again later

I've noticed that when it comes to 'end' game items, on the average you need to spend around 250k to land one (obviously this can vary player to player), either all at once or in parts. I believe Drasca mentioned this before on the old forums. This seems to be holding true for me. Anyone else experience this?

Start again later Recently spent 50 K alternating between 1k and 2 K chests - nothing Spent 100 K on 2 K chests - nothing, lots of repeat items like smurf was saying though. These 8 bows of artifice will come in handy! Next step, stop buying as per Hunter's advice! Lol

That 250 K theory is interesting. I'd be happy with the penultimate end game weapons ;-) But wah wah wah - the game is still fun, even lacking the coolest stuff. And I do have a few of the Hakkons, and they rock, so maybe I'll just stop thinking about it. I feel better already :-)

It works like Mass Effect 3 MP RNG. More expensive chest more chance to get better items. Every unique you can get can be crafted one, every rare can be unique and every common can be rare.

I think the best thing really is to stop thinking about it, and find an amount you're willing to spend in the store at one time that doesn't feel like too much to waste or too little to have a chance of finding anything. For me, it's 50k, but I went on two 50k shopping sprees today and still no crescent. Four Longbows of the Griffon, though.
I've had the problem of finding back-to-back items and repeating duplicates, but whether or not to alternate reminds me somewhat of the lottery dilemma. You can either play the same set of numbers repeatedly and hope they come up, or play a random set every time and hope they coincide with the winning numbers. You have no control over the outcome, either way.

Rage quit at some point but came back after half a year. By then I stopped caring about all the end-game gears and just played for fun. Had many good games with my trusty Heartstring bow...and Spoon, and Ham... Hakkon bow dropped for me eventually, but this time I didn't even pay attention to how long it took or how many gold I had spent. Maybe we should create a support thread for people to vent their frustrations with RNG to help them feel better, no?

It just feels like forever lol I guess I figured that by the time I reached this prestige level I'd at least have all the 26's, let alone the 27's, all the Hakkons, and the Crescent. Then again, remember back in the days that everyone wanted the Sulevin Blade as that was "best of the best", before the Dragon Weapons? Never got one of those either ;-)

Hakkon Staff was from 270g chest, 2H was from 2000 gold chest...
Main advantage to 2000g chest is cheaper per item, and more chances of getting good weapons. I havent noticed the same item reset that was mentioned, but i have gotten a couple of 2000 gold chests with all purples before. (Heart of Pride and Despair first time, Isana's Song and Edgewise second time. The rest were lower level purples).

All of my high tier stuff like that has dropped from dragons, but good to know it's possible :-) I'll trade you a Dragon Maul for Isanas song, or even the lyrium infused staff. What do you say? ;-)
