That's great! I'm glad he's enjoying it. I agree that The Witcher does some things very well, even better than Dragon Age.
I still don't like the series, though. Can't fucking stand Geralt.

I like how one of the tweets he did was making fun of the whole aspect of Geralt walking into other people's homes and looting their stuff with no complaint, when that's literally been a stick for Dragon Age since the first game.

Honestly, I wouldn't want every single game to be as big as TW3. I have somewhat limited time for games and I still prefer to be able to finish more than, say, one narrative-heavy game every two months and do multiple playthroughs of the ones I really like. It worked for TW3 because it had an appropriately loosely structured plot that allowed time to explore locations and characters in a lot more depth - Ciri's disappearance is important, but Geralt often doesn't have many solid leads and there are plenty of other important things popping up along the way.
DA:I and Fallout 4, however, are demonstrations of the "OK, enough already" factor when games do "more and bigger" the wrong way - i.e. fetch quests and repetitive combat that offer nothing new beyond maybe an environment that you haven't seen before. Personally, that isn't enough for it to feel like time well spent for me.

I really wish games would find an alternative to that. I get that it's almost become sort of a running inside joke, but it's always felt out of place to me, and doubly so in a setting like the Witcherverse where plenty of people are already poor and miserable without some jackass going around stealing plants and coins from their cupboard. Plus, sometimes it almost seems like I'm being punished for not doing it when I look at the prices for the good weapons and armor and compare them to how much money I've been able to earn without all the looting.

You're not alone in that. I never played the first game, so maybe some stuff was explained in that, but I played TW2 2 (and a half) times and was pretty confused by a lot of the high level political stuff. The codices were of fairly minimal value as they're written from the perspective of the least political, least reliable individual in the game (Dandelion).
TW3 lays it out a little better, but it is also simpler. War, destroy, crazy, bad. Pretty simple to follow.

I don't mind getting an open world like the Witcher 3, if said open world can handle making its open world as memorable and alive as that game. I I love tightly based open world games like Yakuza or even the setting Trails in the Sky, where all the NPCs have their own little story that spans over long periods of time through the game, makes the world feel organic and alive. This is why Arkham Asylum is a better game than Arkham City, the Asylum and all its secrets, it's ins and out are more memorable than the samey looking streets of Arkham City. Kamurocho does this too with the Yakuza series, where they keep building more and more new stuff into an established city, where you come about memorable locales, discovering new passage ways, revisiting the old and getting reacquianted with its people. That's a good open world. That's why Ground Zeroes was more fun than the Phantom Pain, had the Phantom Pain featured levels on par with Camp Omega or Groznyj Grad it would have been a much stronger game. It could still be sprawly with its already detailed and complex gameplay mechanics.
Dragon Age Inquisition's problem was squeezing in too much open terrain with little substance, generally only text files were there to embellish the otherwise empty terrain and its history. Witcher 3 felt like the nice balance between making an open world big, but not too big. Wind Waker was also a game that succeeded in making its world feel big without necessarily being big. The formula itself isn't bad it's just flawed with too many badly designed worlds like the ones in Mafia 2, L.A. Noire, Mad Max etc.

It's a old tradition that is featured in a lot of games that I'm rather certain has been poked fun at for as long as it has been implemented. Even Pokémon has it: barging into other people's houses and looking for things of interest to basically steal. In the latest game in the series, a guy even outright tells you to get out of his hotel room and you can just ignore him and keep on rooting through the room.

I just finished my replay of TW2 last night, and I was able to follow all the different agendas and schemes in the mix a little more than I could the first time around, though I'm still not sure I quite got all of it. If I understand correctly, Nilfgaard instructed Letho to kill as many northern kings and generally cause as much chaos as possible to soften the north for an invasion, the Lodge of Sorceresses wanted Demavend dead because they didn't think he was up to the job, and Iorveth figured that dead kings represented an opportunity for the Scoi'atael? But were Philippa and Sile 100% on the same page? And did Triss really have any idea what was going on? I did Iorveth's path, so I'm going to try and watch some of the cutscenes from Roche's path on YouTube and see if I can pick up any more details. Anyway...one thing I'll say in ME's favor is that at least I never felt too confused by all the politics. Maybe that came at the cost of some overly obvious exposition at times, but in the Witcher games, I do feel like I might be missing something from not having read the books (or maybe just not paying enough attention to the Codex). Emhyr, for example, is a key character even though he isn't seen until TW3, but he's mentioned several times in TW2, and I doubt that the name meant much to me the first time I played the game. I think some of this might be translation issues as well. At least such is one source of my confusion in game 1. If you side with Abigail in the Vizima Outskirts, then all the villagers mysteriously appear dead after you fight the beast. It was abundantly unclear *why* siding with Abigail caused them all to die. I was so confused that I looked it up and several people said that the Polish version basically explained events much better - that the villagers were killed by barghests while I was fighting the beast. There have been some other exceedingly muddy parts like that where I've wondered if they just didn't bother to translate all the information.

Can you post the quote in question? Because without it, I'm more inclined to believe that he was poking fun of it rather than making a serious complaint about it.

Yeah, the Minutemen quests are a prime example of that, but I did like how Fallout 4 allowed the factions to be populated by people who aren't evil. It's nice to side with a faction and have another be your opponent without them turning evil to make it easier for you to fight them. The ideological schism over artificial intelligence between the Eastern Brotherhood of Steel and the Railroad was an example of where Fallout 4 succeeded for me, particularly when you have to fight people you've come to know because they're on the opposing side of the issue.

Merged the David Gaider TW3 discussion with this thread. We really only need one thread on the BioWare v CDPR comparisons.
