I saw the Dragon Age Confessions thread and thought about making one for Baldur's Gate.
When I saw Viconia in Baldur's Gate 1, I wanted her to apart of my party. I wanted to kick Jaheira out of the party, but then I realized Khalid would leave with her. So I took away all of her armor and weapons, then sent her to get killed by a bear nearby. I recruited Viconia afterwards.
In Baldur's Gate 2, I recruited Viconia into my party. Only to kick Jaheira out of my party and leave her to wait for me in her bear form for the rest of the game.
I am a cruel person, I know.

My confession is that I've never actually finished BG2. In my last playthrough I think I stopped when I reached the Underdark. I need to sit down and play all the way through one of these days.
Also, I find BG1 incredibly dull.

Kivan from BG1 is responcible for me not playing a lot of newer games -I just dove into modding because of him. And nowadays, I think he wouldn't make the cut with all the more advanced companions and way more elaborate backstories.
I liked BG1 more than BG2, because it had so many companions!
I only kept Minsc because of Dynaheir. He gets very boring very fast.

Also, I find BG1 incredibly dull. Can't argue with that. I knew about the gameplay with BG1, so I used a mod that allowed me to play it with the Baldur's Gate 2 engine (they both have to be installed while you do this). So playing the game ended up being a great experience. Then I used another mod that made your party members talk more. That made the game more fun. And fair enough Domi, I like Minsc, but I see why others wouldn't. He's still very useful due to his strength though. I played Dragon Age: Origins immediately after I finished BG2. When I met Sten, I thought "Minsc, is that you" because he had a lot of strength.

So, loveable to meet, but for adventuring I like characters that talk more and have better backstories. My first party, back in 1997 was Dynaheir, Minsc, Branwen, Kivan and Imoen. And, yep, Dominica the Bard, which ended up as my gaming handle. :) Basically one of the classic set ups. Sten, on the other hand, has a really nice personality, and a bunch of very funny dialogues. They really went a long way from Minsc to Wrex or Sten, giving the big roaring buddy a lot more backstory and interesting stuff. For a while, I felt that basically every BioWARE joinable character can be traced back to the original 25 BG1 NPC Archtypes. Then they started breaking the mold, and I am glad they did.

One of the main reasons why I had a good time playing BG was due to that mod to begin with.

I only revived the wife once and didn't like her much, so Kivan always belongs to my PC, even if she doesn't romance him.
Agree that BG1 is much more fun with the NPC mod installed - everyone is way more talkative.
I romanced Anomen in my first game and then never again.
As a male I only romanced Aerie (one time).
The thought of romancing Jaheira creeps me out.
Also in my first game, after rescuing Imoen I told her to find her own way back. Jaheira got mad and left.
In both BG and BG2 I tend to stick with my early party since companions recruited later on are a much lower level than the PC and therefore pretty useless.
Beholders and liches suck.

Why does romancing Jaheira creep you out? Also, I just made this connection. In BG, I got Jaheira killed by a bear, then in BG2, I l left her in the form of the animal that I got her killed with. That actually makes what I did to her even more twisted, and I didn't even hate her.

She and Khalid kind of assume the role of surrogate parents in BG, at least for me since I normally keep them in my party. At the least, she's in a mentor role for the PC. Romancing her only a couple years later just seems wrong. And gross. Not to mention the fact she just lost her husband. I like her too much as a character for that. Plus, the fact she will go against the Harpers for you without it being a romance thing is awesome.

I felt similar about Jaheira, and always liked them as a couple. On her own, I am not that fond of her. I did romance Aerie in bg as well, the only official romance for a male. Amber was my fav from fan made ones.

I disagree on her & Khalid's roles. Yes, they promised Gorion to take care of the PC in the case something happened to him, but I distinctly got the feeling that it was an old promise from when the PC was still a child. By the time you meet them at the Friendly Arm, you're an adult and they've essentially barely aged at all due to how long (half-)elves live. If I were to convert everyone's ages to correspond with humans in real life, I'd say the PC is something like 20-23 and Khalid/Jaheira around 27-32 at the start of BG1. I never saw them as parental figures, though I will grant you that they're mentors for the (in BG1) still inexperienced adventurer, but even then the PC is the leader of the party, they don't really have a position of authority over him/her that would make a future romantic entaglement morally iffy.
As for Khalid's death and how it relates to a male PC romancing Jaheira in BG2, I thought it was very tastefully done. I think people get hung up on the fact that you're technically going down the romance "path" and the romance theme plays during your talks with her already very early on, but the actual content of your discussions with Jaheira doesn't get overtly romantic until much later. I'd say most of it is more the PC helping a dearly loved friend deal with their grief, and that eventually grows into a relationship. The problem lies more with the player if you're interpreting it as the PC just trying to get into her pants from the get go.
Oh, uh confessions? I find it near impossible to not keep Minsc, Jaheira and Imoen in my party in BG2. With all of them I feel an incredible sense of guilt and just feel like the biggest piece of shit if I leave them behind in favor of someone else taking their party slot.

Me as well. Kicking Minsc from the party feels like abandoning child to dark forest. I just can't do it. My confession: I love Anomen. He's my first romance ever.

Good for you that you feel that way. This sort of perceptions differ between the players, and one PoV is no more valid than another. I saw quite a lot of players treating Jaheira as a mother figure. TBH, I always did as well.

I'm obviously going to be partial to my own thoughts, but everyone can feel however they want about it. I will disagree with viewing Jaheira as a mother figure, but that doesn't mean I expect you or anyone else to change their mind to align with my own thoughts of her as a character and her story arc.

Confessions?
I booted Imoen out of the party as soon as I reached Nashkel and met Edwin. She spent the rest of the game standing by the bridge, keeping Noober company. Jaheira and Khalid got the boot in a random encounter screen and got replaced with Dorn. I'd run into them from time to time when transitioning through the areas. I pretended not to know them.
I find Minsc unfunny and annoying. Then again, one gets few chances to be funny when getting murdered by the group that just offed your ladyfriend cause a weird wizard asked them to.
I spend a lot of money on the services of the PR clerics.
I installed the TOB Sarevok romance mod and feel no shame.

My confession is that I've never actually finished BG2. In my last playthrough I think I stopped when I reached the Underdark. I need to sit down and play all the way through one of these days. Also, I find BG1 incredibly dull. I finished the Underdark, or the Underdark finished me , I'm unsure. The Underdark+ romancing an annoying paladin+ loosing a companion in some fish town due to being turned to stone and there was nothing to be done = me finally seeing the light of day , and finding myself surrounded by hysterical elves , at which point I decided "I'm so done with this game". Anyway my confession is I actually started to play BG I and II more than 10 years ago , and I give up. I finished BG1 and almost BG2.This is good enough. Also the romances were horrible and the writing is alright but not wonderful. But I can see how it could be something big 20 years ago.

So Carth Syndrome is actually Jaheira Syndrome :P ? The earliest NPC I can think of with a dead spouse was Kivan. Unlike Carth and Thane he did not have a child from that relationship. Well, neither did Jaheira. Coran had a child, but his girlfriend was not dead, and married to another man... whom the Bhaalspawn killed. Cernd had a wife he'd left (like Thane), and a child he did not know about (unlike Thane), and once his wife died he took care of the child... It's hard to tell if Minsc felt anything romantic towards Dynaheir, but he was certainly impacted by her death.

So Carth Syndrome is actually Jaheira Syndrome ? The earliest NPC I can think of with a dead spouse was Kivan. Unlike Carth and Thane he did not have a child from that relationship. Well, neither did Jaheira. Coran had a child, but his girlfriend was not dead, and married to another man... whom the Bhaalspawn killed. Cernd had a wife he'd left (like Thane), and a child he did not know about (unlike Thane), and once his wife died he took care of the child... It's hard to tell if Minsc felt anything romantic towards Dynaheir, but he was certainly impacted by her death. Kelldorn has a wife though she's cheating on him. And he can have her imprisoned (and her lover hanged) Jan Jansen isn't married, though the woman he loves is in an abusive relationship with someone else. Jan can have him...removed...in a highly creative manner. And of course there's Mazzy and Patrick

My first playthrough was as a power-hungry Neutral Evil nutjob.
NO REGRETS.

Both the confessions i had in mind are taken, but i'll go there anyway.
Baldurs Gate (the original) is incredibly boring, saved only by a decent expansion. I replayed it recently as the enhanced edition and it was slightly better, but the new companions are really forgettable.
I love the Aerie romance. Its way shorter than Jaheira and Viconia, and way more cheesy, but its the right kind of cheese.
