confession: what the fuck, anomen i just. what the fu why lol My confession is that I actually love the characters people love to hate. Anomen and Aerie are among my favourite characters actually, for very different reasons ofc. 1) Anomen does come off as a bit a douchebag at first, but there's something very realistic and human about that And if you dig deeper his behaviour is quite understandable given the backstory with his father. I never "romanced" him, but even so if you guide his character down the rightful path, he develops quite a lot throughout your adventure and ends up being quite a pleasant companion. Oh yeah, he is also an absolute powerhouse of a character and arguably the most powerful Companion in BG2. In my "personal canon" playthrough Anomen died fighting against Abazigal. (Roasted, chunked by a single 90-ish dmg breath attack). I shed a tear. 2) People say Aerie whines too much, but again I think it's understandable given the context of what she's been through. Besides that vulnerability tickles my "white knight" gene and makes me wanna wrap her up in cotton wool. What can I say, I'm a traditional guy . Anyway like Anomen, she also develops significantly throughout the adventure, and by Throne of Bhaal she is pretty confident and self-assured.

Aw, I like Anomen well enough. I just like to tease him. His was really one of the happiest romances in the game. And this has nothing to do with anything, but I found this post on the Beamdog forums and legit LOL'd:

I confess that I really don't like Minsc, he is so annoying. He get the boot every time , I can replace him. In BG, I only took him with me to get Dyaneir. After that, I sent him on suicide missions without weapons. Kivan is one of my alltime favorites (and I do love @domis mod ) I only played the Anomen romance once, but I didn't liked the character and used modded romances later on for BG2 (Kivan, Xan and Haer'Dalis are my favorites). I only used Aerie in my first playthrough, but she is too annoying. I love playing bards and getting the theater my favorite fighter ccompanion is Mazzy (although I do love Keldorn too)

Honestly, I prefer grounded plot of Baldur's Gate...right up until you are the god of fucking murder. That part always bothered me. That, and the game is boring as hell throughout 80% of it. Baldur's Gate 2 we see a lot better curation of content honestly.

I'd romance Mazzy if I could... I hate halfings so much... That's kinda the thing about BG2: several of the copanions stand standard fantasy tropes on their heads. Halflings are sneaky thieves. Mazzy is an upstanding, highly lawful warrior (and would-be paladin)

It's why whenever I run Pathfinder they tend to be extinct if I can help it.

Kender I could understand... I constructed my own fantasy setting using Pathfinder/DnD rules basically, where Dragonborn had a huge empire and "enslaved" younger races...before they died out after cataclysmic wars and their dragon gods going extinct. A few of the races suffered that fate, like Goblins and Halflings for example. I don't know what it is. I feel like it's too lord of the rings for me, doesn't really fit in the settings I tend to create, but then again originality is not exactly possible sometimes, although I do tweak the lore of the other races where I can. Halflings were the one core race I kept out of that if I could. If people insist I relent and let them put it in, but I rarely engage in halflings outside of a few NPCs and maybe an enemy or two. I did have a Gnome Mafia boss though. "Gemtooth Garafolo" I called him. Fantastic character in the last campaign I ran, sort of a business-man looking for an angle in an ailing empire.

Well, in the Dark Sun setting, halflings are lawful evil jungle dwellers with a taste for raw flesh (and cannibalism)

It's why I use the rule-set for custom settings. Most of the lore is terrible otherwise because of it's pastiche nature.

It's why I use the rule-set for custom settings. Most of the lore is terrible otherwise because of it's pastiche nature. Well the campaign I have been can generally be described as "post-apocalyptic Greyhawk" with a LOT of home-brewed rules and creatures. Halflings are considered just another race, their culture (along with everyone else's) was lost a thousand years ago or more in the Dragon Wars and Tiamat ascended to become queen of the gods. But I did like playing my 5th edition dragon sorcerer in a Forgotten Reals setting. Due to the scales he grew as a result of his heritage, one of the other players initially mistook him for a deformed kobold

At that point I'd rather play 4th edition forgotten realms. They at least lessened the more ridiculous elements found in 3rd and 2nd.
This is why I customize worlds, rarely rulesets, more of an idea guy, need to have things make sense for me.
For example, drow existing due to an ancient elven civil war, and using dark magic to gan power to fight their enemies in an endless battle on the surface and underground, instead of the whole concept of the underdark.

I confess that Kivan is one of my favorite characters from BG1 and i was disappointed when i realize he wasn`t in BG2, and Anomen is one of my favorite characters from BG2 (and i liked his romance).
I confess that i never liked Minsc and in order to recruit Dynaheir without him i`ve always get the quest to save her from Edwin. This way i never even have to talk with him.

I went on the internet and found the original topless picture of the model they used as inspiration for Viconia. This was many years ago though.

I've been meaning to try BG2 for a while. There was recently a GOG sale and, after some vacillation, I decided to grab the first one too. Out of curiosity, and for completion's sake, even though what I had heard about it was not promising. 'Twas cheap enough. Feel free to skip the following if you have no interest in reading me rant, or want to avoid spoilers for the first game: May I say I did not care for it? It's not terrible, but it feels more like a sandbox RPG in Bethesda's style than anything story-driven. There's so much fluff and so much dicking around that it reminded me off *gasp* Inquisition, or ME1 if you actually bother with all of the side content. The plot has a weak, weak hook, as well as a lazy setup: "Do whatever you want, hero. I'm sure if you goof off enough you'll bump into the main plot somehow!" It sort of picks up when you arrive at the titular city, but it is too little, too late.
And it's amazing how little characterization there is in the whole game put together. I've heard people complain about the Hawke sibling dying too soon in the prologue, but Gorion drops dead literally after the first time you talk to him. Yes, I am very sad, game. Very, very sad. Sarevok is the closest to a complex character the story has, but his merit is in being two-dimensional whereas everyone else is flat. It's bizarre how much this game feels like the ancestor of Skyrim rather than of Origins.
And good God, the combat! Oh, no, it's not what you think. I was ready for the clunkiness, this being an old game with a D&D ruleset and all. I can tolerate that most of it consists of characters failing to hit each other. But at such a low level there is almost nothing my little army can do. Non-magical classes have little beyond the basic attack, and magical ones have two or three spells which get used up quickly, rendering them useless. There were battles which depended solely on me getting a hit through before the opponent did, making them nothing but a throw of the die. I have just gotten out of Shadows of Amn's first dungeon, and I have seen a significant improvement. The characters have already been more lively than they were in the entirety of the first game. The combat is more fun, genuinely challenging, and has more variety. The visuals are more interesting, and not just Same Old Forest and Renn Faire Town over and over again. I have already gotten an interesting sidequest and a few chances to meaningfully roleplay. Hopefully it'll only get better from here. Thou shall hear from me again!

I liked BG1, though I'll admit I never really felt much connection with the character I finished it with (maybe my fault as he was a pretty boring human warrior) or much interest in the Forgotten Realms setting.I do think it's somewhat dull in the early stages (I hate Candlekeep), but once you get to Nashkel it becomes much better.

Candlekeep is pretty much the tutorial.
